Niger: Meningitis
Get PDFNiger is a semi-presidential republic located in western Africa. The majority of the population lives in the most extreme southern part of the country since 80% of Niger’s territory is occupied by the Sahara desert. The desert has been spreading in recent years forcing people to leave their subsistence farms. The majority of the population lives with less than 1 dollar per day. The first meningitis outbreak lasted from 2002 until 2012, but the 2015 outbreak was the one that caused more damage to the countries located in the meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa. The meningitis belt is the place with the highest burden of the disease, stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east. In the big outbreak in 2015, 12,000 cases were registered in Niger and Nigeria. 800 deaths were registered. The most effective prevention for Meningitis is vaccination. More than 220 million people have been vaccinated. The price of the vaccine was around US1,951,562 US dollars. This report will talk about the cost of the surveillance in Niger, and how even more people could be vaccinated with a simple idea that apparently did not cross the minds of the health authorities
Seychelles: Diabetes
Get PDFOne of the major health problems in Seychelles, a cluster of islands off the coast of Eastern Africa, is diabetes. There are many different types of diabetes, but the most common type to this region is Type 2 diabetes. At this time Seychelles, and many other countries in Africa, have about half of the adult population diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Along with the diagnosis of diabetes being a problem, people in Seychelles often go undiagnosed for a while because they are ignorant to the risks and the symptoms of the disease. Only about 50% of the population with pre-diabetic symptoms are aware of their own symptoms, so they are unaware of the fact that they need to go to the doctor to get the medication they need. The biggest problem with this is that when diabetes goes untreated it can cause a whole list of other health problems that such as: heart disease, kidney failure, blindness and many more. In 2017, a petition went out to address the concern with the high number of Type 2 diabetes diagnoses and there has been great feedback so far. Many countries, like Seychelles, are still waiting for follow through from these organizations
Kenya: HIV/AIDs
Get PDFKenya is a country in Africa that has been dealing with the detrimental effects of HIV and AIDs. HIV/AIDs are a virus and a syndrome that affects a person’s immune system. It is spread through the sharing of bodily fluids (ex. blood, semen, etc.). HIV/AIDs is a known problem in Kenya, and although the numbers are declining it still affects a large percentage of the population. The spread of HIV/AIDs can be stopped through getting tested, using condoms, and education of what the disease is and how to stop it. Part of the reason it spreads, despite the multiple charities whose goal it is to stop HIV/AIDs is poverty. Half of Kenya lives in poverty. For those who live in poverty it can make it almost impossible to stop the spread as they cannot get information, may not have access to condoms, and cannot seek treatment as it can be too far and/or too expensive
Australia: Prevention of Tobacco use and Cigarettes
Get PDFThe use and abuse of Alcohol and Tobacco are two concerns of public health care system in Australia. In 1995, 3.2 adults in Australia were identified at risk of developing chronic conditions from smoking tobacco. This was equivalent to around 23.5% of the adult population (quitnow). Tobacco is associated with an increased risk of a wide range of health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, renal disease, eye disease and respiratory conditions such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis. Higher infant and young adult mortality rate. Tobacco products are also linked to habitual forming good making the user depending on their use. The epidemiologic research on the number of death tolls in Australia of men who smoke in 2010 where 15-19.9% which puts Australia at higher risk of mortality compared to countries in the developing regions. Young adults 18 and older are the most identifiable age characteristics of the population at risk. High income groups are another identifiable population characteristic that is affected by smoking and tobacco products (Australian Bureau of Statistics). The current laws in Australia advocates for the prevention of smoking through the anti-smoking mass media campaign between 2014-2016. No laws are set by the government to reach a completely smoke free environment. However, Australia’s health insurance partially covers all costs for his/her support tobacco dependences (WHO). Andrea’s research looks into behavioral patterns of the user with illicit substance disorder and compares that research with persons of the United States in developing a more effective health and clinical intervention to reduce smoking behavior. Persons of tobacco can be a preventative public health intervention with the proper implementation of legislative policies and clinical support systems to reduce the risk of specific identified persons on a demographic subgroup
