Sense of Community and Space
Get PDFSense of community (SOC) is defined as a person’s experience of a group or specific area (Kenkmann et al, 1996). Physical spaces can affect SOC; small colleges have higher SOC on average than universities (Lounsbury & DeNeui, 1996). A person’s identity, especially ethnic identity, can also influence SOC (Rivas-Drake, 2012; Liu, 2005). However, there is less work on the intersection of physical space and ethnic identity (Devlin et al, 2008). This raises the questions: how does the experience of a community space affect someone’s SOC, and would it vary by ethnicity?
The relationship between communal spaces and identity can be could explored by asking different individuals how they perceive a space. In one such study, students from different cultural backgrounds had different expectations and evaluations of psychotherapists offices based on design (Devlin et al, 2013). Further, it is likely that there are places some individuals from different groups are going to feel more comfortable. I hypothesize that having comfortable community spaces is positively correlated with SOC. This will be more prominent amongst minority groups which may not always be represented in communal spaces.
The results of the data show that students of color have a lower sense of community than their white peers. Additional exploratory analysis did not produce significance.
Being able to access how a person can perceive a space can give useful insight into how certain community spaces are constructed and affected by someone’s identity. The challenge lies in continuing to push for more inclusive spaces and in order to do so, the current spaces must be examined to determine which spaces are prioritized or neglected

Avoidant Coping Mediates the Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Stress
Get PDFThe current study will examine how socioeconomic status affects perceived social support and coping strategies and how these two factors affect stress levels and post traumatic growth. This could lead to developments in how to better educate people on the most effective ways to deal with stress and providing community resources to populations particularly vulnerable to stress. Perceived social support and coping have been shown to affect post-traumatic growth and stress. Differences in coping strategies and availability of support may be partly driven by an individual\u27s socioeconomic status. Perceived social support is defined as the extent to which someone believes support is available to them. Coping strategies can be defined in various ways, but for this study they will be separated into two categories: proactive and reactive. Proactive coping are strategies taken before a stressor begins; while reactive coping are strategies taken after a stressor has begun. First, we hypothesize that people cope differently depending on their socioeconomic status. Generally what we have found about coping and socioeconomic status is that individuals with higher socioeconomic status are more likely to employ proactive coping strategies than those with low socioeconomic status.
Second, we propose that individuals with different levels of socioeconomic statuses will have varying levels of perceived social support. We believe that individuals with higher socioeconomic statuses may perceive that they have higher levels of social support available to them in time of need.
The purpose of this study is to examine how socioeconomic status influences perceived social support alongside proactive and reactive coping strategies and how those two factors affect post-traumatic growth and stress levels, mediated by the type of stressor

The course is part of a three-term sequence of First Year Inquiry courses that all first-year students at Augustana take. The students in my class worked in small teams to investigate the family history and genealogy of an Augustana alum. The alums were taken from the members of the senior class as listed in the Augustana College catalog of 1885–1886. The resulting papers were part of the requirements of the course

Resilient Spirits
No full textThrough this project, I wanted to capture the resilient spirit of children. The inspiration for this project came from my study abroad trip to Guatemala where I met so many amazing children who have encountered many difficult life experiences, including poverty, abuse, racism or adolescent pregnancy. In addition to that trip, I have also had the opportunity to work with children who are homeless, discriminated against or forgotten about here at home. Sometimes it is obvious that they are hurting or have experienced trauma, but sometimes they are excellent at hiding it. I wanted to capture this idea in my paintings; that you cannot always look at a child and know what they have been through, yet they have so much potential to lead fantastic lives. I love seeing that in them and I want to work with them one day as an art therapist to help bring that out.
I chose to paint in a textured and expressive style because this topic is one that I am very emotional and passionate about. I created compositions for all of these paintings which put the children in the center of the canvases because they are the main subjects of this work. I want the viewer’s focus to be on them before focusing on their surroundings. I used a variety of colors to represent both sides of these children’s experiences; darker colors to show the struggles and brighter, warmer colors to show the hope and potential I see in them
