Get PDFThis paper argues that whiteness and white fragility promote docile bystanders during racially charged campus incidents; however, a womanist, liberationist theology can effectively redress the misuse of Christian theology to advance white-supremacy in Lutheran institutions. First, I will leverage womanist ethicist Emilie Townes\u27 concept of the fantastic hegemonic imagination to debunk stereotypes about Black students and analyze a recent racist incident at Augustana College. Next, utilizing Townes\u27 concept of counter memory and Black liberation James Cone\u27s insights in combination with Martin Luther and Dorothy Soelle\u27s work, I will articulate a distinctly Lutheran theology that is oppositional to racist campus climates

Get PDFSince the day he announced his campaign for President, people have been comparing Donald Trump to a Nazi. I, like many of us, have long believed that comparison to be overly simplistic, though not completely without merit. In this essay I analyze that comparison through an examination of the rhetoric and tactics of exclusion used by both Donald Trump and his campaign and the Nazi Party. Though there are substantive differences in some rhetorical tactics, there are also some frightening similarities. It is my hope that an honest and even handed understanding of how our current political moment compares to that of 1930s Germany can allow us to learn from humanity\u27s mistakes and ensure that such atrocities are never committed again
