Borderline Personality Disorder Stigmatization: Bias, Discrimination, and Prejudice in the Healthcare Field
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder characterized by patterns of unstable moods, impulsive behaviors, and insecure relationships. Often misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder, BPD is difficult to diagnose due to its symptoms overlapping with many other conditions. There has been a reluctance to work with individuals who have BPD due to the surrounding stigma. In fact, healthcare workers tend to misunderstand BPD, and assume that those who have it are manipulative, aggressive, violent, and unable to be helped. This stigmatization has a profound impact on how BPD clients are seen in the healthcare field and furthermore how they receive treatment. It is clear that bias, discrimination, and prejudice impacts the social, cognitive, and emotional outcomes for individuals with BPD due to the stigma in the healthcare field

Historically, medicine has centered around a single model: that of the white, cisgender, heterosexual, abled, middle-class male body. While it is well known that patients of diverse identities often present differently, medical education continues to use this dominant, normative model as the standard for all patients while ignoring marginalized groups in their descriptions. Flippin\u27 Medicine reflects on the prevalence of normative models in medicine, as well as the ways in which these models slip past the notice of providers with privileged identities. The author then describes the process behind creating a resource, titled Flipped Medicine: A Guide to Deconstructing the Normative Patient Model, that aims to teach providers how to identify and deconstruct normative models in medical education by centering the experiences of marginalized patients
The Dilemma of Banned Books: Questioning the Ethics of Censoring Literature in Schools
Literature, specifically in the form of novels, has been a vital organ of the public education system within the United States. Not only does reading such works transform us into better close readers and strengthen our vocabulary, but the texts at hand can be very essential to analyze specific contexts or issues that might have existed either throughout history or even in the present day. In today’s country, the issue of banning certain books from school curricula has become as prevalent as ever, where mostly Southern Republican officials are calling for lists of books to be restricted from teaching due to controversies in their language, violence, and sexuality. This essay aims to reject such actions of banning and suppression on ethical political grounds while emphasizing the immense educational value controversial texts have in facilitating students’ developments during their adolescence. Through historical legal precedent, the importance of literature on the identity of certain sects of individuals, and previous research data on the relationship between challenged books and citizenship, this paper opposes the ongoing suppression of texts in school curricula

Building Speech & Quantifying Complexity is a dual approach to treating and evaluating articulatory complexity in child speech. It has two components: Building Speech and Quantifying Complexity. These two components can be used independently or together. When used together, the speech-language pathologist has a method for selecting goals and targets of varying levels of articulatory difficulty, plus a means for measuring changes in a child’s words, targeted and produced, at one point in time or over time.
The Building Speech & Quantifying Complexity materials include a manual, picture cards for each of the eight speech patterns, and worksheets for the Index of Phonetic Complexity. The manual provides speech-language pathologists with foundational information, so that they can individualize their assessments and interventions to meet the needs of the children on their caseloads with challenging speech sound disorders. It is not intended to be a lock-step program, but rather, an approach to be used creatively and flexibly by speech-language pathologists to address the needs of the individual children on their caseloads. Building Speech & Quantifying Complexity is designed to assess and treat speakers of American English, although the components can be adapted to fit the phonetics and phonology of other languages
