Rationing Hunger: The Gendered Consequences of India\u27s Public Distribution System

This paper examines how the Public Distribution System (PDS) in India, while introduced to address hunger and food insecurity, displaces women from traditional farming, weakens their nutritional autonomy, and erases their cultural roles in food systems. The focus on subsidized rice and wheat benefits male landowners and excludes women, especially Dalit and Adivasi farmers, from agricultural decision-making. Drawing on a grassroots initiative led by Dalit women in Zaheerabad, the paper highlights how community-driven, decentralized food systems rooted in women’s knowledge can improve food security and restore autonomy. It calls for a reimagined PDS that centers women’s lived experiences and leadership

Data Sonification: The Art of Exploring Space Through Sound

Data sonification is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary field that involves the transformation of data into sound. As the amount of data collected in today’s world continues to rise exponentially, new collaborations between scientists, mathematicians, and musicians are exploring the potential applications of sonification. Turning data into sound can create new avenues for interpretation and can increase accessibility for visually-impaired populations. The sonic renderings produced by this practice exist on a spectrum from sound to music and vary in their levels of objectivity and expressivity. One of the major areas where data sonification is providing a new scientific and artistic perspective is in the field of astronomy. This paper provides an overview of the ways in which data sonification is being used in astronomy and presents an analysis of some specific works created as a part of NASA’s Sonification Project, “A Universe of Sound.” Also included is a brief discussion of data sonification\u27s role in other disciplines such as medical and climate research

Advancing Sex Education and Health Outcome: The Impacts of Education and Support Program in Cambodia

    No full text
Abstract Context: In most countries, early pregnancies are one of the most public health issues, particularly in a developing country like Cambodia. This problem is leading those young mothers to face mental health breakdowns and limited socioeconomic opportunities. Beyond that, they also face the disruption of education and overall health risks in the long term. This research paper answers and delves into doubts related to the question: How does early pregnancy affect the mental health and future socioeconomic opportunities, including education, career prospects, and social mobility, of teenage mothers in Cambodia? Methods: This literature review focuses on psychological and socioeconomic effects on adolescent mothers in Cambodia: the mental health effect, education, and future socioeconomic opportunities. Key sources are from the report NGOs, UNFPA, and the research articles from databases like PubMed and Google Scholar to ensure this paper provides additional insights and context. Results: The study shows that lack of sex education, cultural norms, and healthcare barriers are the main causes of early pregnancy. Consequently, it affects young mothers\u27 emotional and educational setbacks and also increases the high risk of health-related problems which makes an early pregnancy a great challenge. Nevertheless, this research paper identifies potential solutions such as implementing comprehensive sex education, improved community support, and developing maternal healthcare services. These solutions will share the burden of young mothers including their emotional, and social challenges, and financial pressure, and provide better future opportunities with career prospects. Conclusion: Overall, the findings reveal the importance of tackling both local and global factors that are currently contributing to early pregnancy. The insights would improve sex education programs, and access to healthcare centers in Cambodia. The suggestion of the implementation of culturally sensitive education and offering community support to teenage mothers would be helpful for the country. Future research should focus on planning the long-term impact of these solutions, investigating the role of media in promoting sex education even more deeply, the cultural influences on community engagement, and exploring the national policy to reduce the number of early pregnancies in Cambodia

    No full text
This paper looks at the evolution of Augustana College and Theological Seminary from a profane space to a secular one. First, I look at how the Augustana Theological Seminary’s relationship with the College has changed over time. Tying in themes from Vásquez’s reading, with how Seminary’s location as a prominent point on campus demonstrates spatial hierarchy. Secondly, I will look at the hourly bells emanating from Old Main, bringing in Religion is Not Done With You, the discussion falls to the invisibility of religious structures as they largely fade into the background alongside lived religion. Finally, the paper will assess the idea of what and who gets to make a space religious

    I Will Make No Defense

I Will Make No Defense is a combination of a short essay and a free-form poetry chapbook with a glossary of anattractional terms*. The essay discusses the erasure of complex queer identities within journalism, especially those that violate homonormativity. The poetry chapbook itself is written about the author\u27s personal experiences regarding their identities as an aromantic, asexual, and transgender person, and was intended to help reduce this informational gap. It is prefaced by a glossary of necessary terms to aid its accessibility to the general population, and many of the poems address language that erases identities, how a-spec identities and gender are conceptualized in the modern United States, as well as legal and structural concerns. Together, the essay and chapbook emphasize the importance of queer visibility. *A spectrum of orientations that are characterized by not experiencing a form or form(s) of attraction or experiencing these form(s) of attraction at a low level, conditionally, unreliably, or otherwise atypically to societal expectations. Some people on the anattractional spectrum may consider themselves as LGBTQ+, while others may not
