scavenger hunts to in-class debates to zine-making.

AUGUSTANA PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAM
In 2022-2023, research and instruction librarian Garrett Traylor began holding in-person 
information literacy instruction sessions* for the Augustana Prison Education Program.
*Number included in statistics above.
This year’s APEP sessions were for FYI 101 and FYI 102, and focused on in-depth 
conversation about evaluating sources.

2022-2023 saw the continuation of a trend of students seeking out subject librarians for one-
on-one consultations about their research projects.

The significant majority of one-on-one consultations were held by research and instruction 
librarians Anne Earel, Kaitlyn Goss-Peirce, Lauryn Lehman (before her departure in 
December), and Garrett Traylor. Librarian-student meetings can take anywhere from 15 to 
60 minutes or more.
TUTORIALS AND HOW-TO VIDEOS
Research and instruction librarians developed new interactive tutorials to teach basic search 
and other information literacy skills in FYI, FYH, and other sessions as needed. 
Tutorials newly designed by Tredway librarians in 2022-2023 are:

DO BE DO BE DO: LEGO AND MORE
With the assistance and creative consultation of associate 
professor of art and graphic design Vickie Phipps, Tredway 
Library developed a low-key, welcoming makerspace 
centered on building LEGO sets. The theme for the 
makerspace, developed by Vickie, was “Do Be Do Be Do.”
In addition to the tree house pictured here, students built a 
street scene, a boutique hotel, a haunted house, a space 
shuttle, a grand piano, and a model of the Titanic.

To supplement the LEGO sets, Tredway 
Library provided a variety of other arts & 
crafts opportunities to students 
throughout the year, including:
• Miniature pumpkins to paint for 
Halloween
• Holiday ornaments to paint in 
December
• Black-out poetry for National Poetry 
Month
• Small clay pots to paint for Earth Day, 
with cuttings from the library’s large 
collection of plants
The winning pumpkins in the November 
2022 pumpkin-painting contest. 
Funding for "Do Be Do Be Do” was provided by the graphic design program, the Humanities 
Fund, the Jaeke Foundation, and Tredway Library. Signage was developed by student 
Christina O’Connell.

DIVERSITY AUDIT
Tredway Library’s diversity audit of the circulating collection continued in the form of a 
purchasing audit of 2022-23 acquisitions. The audit shows progress in the library’s collecting 
practices and points to further action necessary in the years ahead.

CELEBRATING A RETIREMENT
June 30, 2023, marked the retirement of 
long-time Tredway Library staff member 
Sherrie Herbst. Sherrie began working 
at Augustana on the day of the current 
library building’s grand opening in 1990. 
Sherrie is known among her Tredway 
colleagues and across campus for the 
excellent—and very fast—service she 
offers in interlibrary loan (ILL). In 2020, 
OCLC informed Tredway Library that our 
interlibrary loan services were second 
fastest out of 6000+ libraries in their 
system. Second wasn’t good enough for 
Sherrie, who led her ILL colleagues in a 
race to be first. As a result, Tredway’s 
average article delivery time decreased 
from four hours in 2020 to 55 minutes in 
2023.
FROM TEN MONTHS TO TWELVE
In 2022-23, Tredway Library was fortunate to shift three ten-month faculty librarian positions 
to twelve months. When a research and instruction librarian left Tredway to accept a job 
offer elsewhere, the library, with the support of the college provost, used the savings to 
create the year-round positions. 
The three librarians whose positions were adjusted have increased salaries, as well as 
summer months to complete projects related to assessment, student engagement and 
outreach, collection development, and more.

Space
Utilize our library space in the Gerber Center for Student Life to be beautiful, functional, and 
flexible for an evolving college community.

REMODELING THE MAIN DESK
Tredway has had a combined circulation and research help desk since 2020, and in 2022-23 
the library took a step forward in making the combined desk more accessible and friendly to 
research help interactions. We cut it in half!
ALL-GENDER RESTROOMS
Thanks to the leadership and planning of a college-wide working group, and at the request of 
many students over the years, Tredway Library became one of the first two locations on 
campus (along with Old Main) to offer multi-stall all-gender restrooms. The all-gender 
restrooms are located on Tredway’s second floor, which—as the home of circulation, 
research help, leisure books, puzzles, arts and crafts, and many information literacy 
instruction sessions—is also by far our busiest.

DISPLAYING STUDENT ART
In consultation with associate 
professor of art and graphic 
design Vickie Phipps, Tredway 
Library purchased rack-and-rail 
systems for the second floor to 
permit easy hanging and 
removal of works of art. The 
system will be used to display 
student artwork on a rotating 
basis. Recruitment of student 
artists is set to begin in earnest

The theme of our summer 
conference for Vocation in 
Lutheran Higher Education 
gave space for participants–
staff, faculty, administration–to 
voice tiredness, longing, and 
hope. Though students are 
at the center of all we do, it 
was a gift to all in attendance 
to connect the flourishing of 
students to the flourishing of all of us who work with them 
and for them. 
Vocation, the centerpiece of Lutheran Higher Education, 
works best when each person contributes and each person 
receives. Flourishing is communal as well as personal.
News from our campuses and the wider world is 
challenging. It affects us in our bodies and our neural 
pathways, and with differential impact. Dr. Monica Smith 
gave voice to this in her powerful comments during 
Plenary Session #3: Reconciliation, Restorative Justice, 
and the Flourishing of Black, Indigenous, and Other People 
of Color. “We must gently but firmly speak truth to power in 
love…How can we flourish if only some are centered and 
others are at the margins?” In a gathering of DEI officers 
following the conference Dr. Smith’s words arose again and 
again to ground Lutheran Higher Education in the call of 
our collective moment. 
Our values–as persons and as institutions–must guide 
our discernment about what kind of work is most needful 
in this moment. Flourishing does not happen automatically 
through inspiring programs or stirring speeches. Instead, 
conditions for flourishing are planned, supported, and 
defended by leaders as well as tended, cultivated, and 
shared by each of us and all of us.
The contributions for this issue grow out of the summer 
conference theme of flourishing educators (broadly 
construed to mean persons working in educational insti-
tutions). Each piece has truth to tell and values to live out. 
Center yourself in the flexibility and motion emanating 
hope of Us/We, the cover art by William Hatchet, graduate 
of Augustana, Rock Island, and join the conversation.

Intersections is a publication by and largely for the academic communities of the  
twenty-seven institutions that comprise the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities (NECU). 
Each issue reflects on the intersection of faith, learning, and teaching within Lutheran higher 
education. It is published by the NECU, and has its home in the Presidential Center for Faith and 
Learning at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, the institutional sponsor of the publication. 
Intersections extends and enhances discussions fostered by the annual Vocation of Lutheran Higher 
Education Conference, together lifting up the vocation of Lutheran colleges and universities. It aims 
to raise the level of awareness among faculty, staff, and administration about the Lutheran heritage 
and church-relatedness of their institutions, especially as these intersect with contemporary 
challenges, opportunities, and initiatives.

One example of finding a vocation amidst disruption caused 
by AI could be retraining in a field that complements AI, 
such as digital ethics or human-centered AI design. These 
fields address the social and ethical implications of AI and 
work towards creating technology that is fair, transparent, 
and empowering for all individuals. By acquiring skills 
in these areas, individuals can position themselves for 
careers that are not only relevant but also meaningful in 
the age of AI.
Artist’s Statement
Joe Cibere is a signature member of the National 
Watercolor Society and his painting style demonstrates 
his love of nature and wilderness. His "abstract realism" 
paintings integrate strong design and balance with a 
sense of illusion and have appeared in Watercolor Artist 
Magazine, Artists Magazine, Best of Acrylic, Splash 23, and 
in the International Artists book The Watercolor Sky and 
Cloud Techniques of 23 International Artists.

What are we to do in the face 
of the growing injustice in our 
world? Communities around 
the world are being ripped 
apart by natural disasters 
fueled by climate change as we 
with more privilege continue 
to consume and pollute at 
an unsustainable rate. In 
our own country, women are 
being stripped of their bodily autonomy by overzealous 
lawmakers eager to use their idea of God to continue the 
subjugation of the female body. Black and brown people 
are still routinely being murdered by the police, those who 
claim to keep us all safe, and are enslaved in a cradle-to-
prison pipeline designed to keep their bodies oppressed. 
Queer folx are assaulted by word and deed, whether as 
gay people told their queerness is “their cross to bear” 
or trans people assaulted on their walk home from work, 
simply as they try to exist as their fullest selves.
Mainstream efforts, such as those made in the Suffrage 
and Civil Rights movements, would guide us to work within 
the system; women gained the right to vote largely by 
working through their male counterparts, and black folks, 
under a media-promoted, deradicalized ideal of Martin 
Luther King Jr., are said to have persuaded their white 
counterparts to gain Civil Rights. Each of these examples 
is memorialized as completed within the system and is 
celebrated for starting successful movements in large part 
through their supplication to those who had power within 
the system, men and white folks. These both were tremen-
dous steps in the path toward justice, and ones that should 
not be overlooked; however, the horrendous maltreatment 
of and violence against the black and brown body, as well as 
the domination over the female body have not entirely faded 
into the background to leave a world absent of these forms 
of oppression. The problem remains in the presence of the 
systems themselves, systems born and bred to perpetuate 
harm against those marginalized and to keep those with 
privilege in power.
So we ask ourselves again, “What are we to do?” In order 
to address this question, I suggest we revisit how Jesus 
interacted with unjust systems. In Matthew 21:12-13, it is 
written: 
“¹²Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out 
all who were selling and buying in the temple, and 
he overturned the tables of the money changers 
and the seats of those who sold doves. ¹³He said to 
them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house 
of prayer,’ but you are making it a den of robbers” 
(NRSVUE).
The moneychangers and the sellers of goods had formed 
their own system of oppression, one intended to exploit 
those who came to worship God and exclude those that 
couldn’t pay the exorbitant price. The priests of the temple, 
too, by allowing and gaining from the practice, partook in 
the creation of this system, profiting off of this exploitation. 
When Jesus sees this, he flips the tables. Jesus does not sit

back and allow for this exploitation, he flips the tables. Jesus 
does not request the Priests, those with the power to stop 
the abuse but who chose to profit off of it instead, stop the 
practice, he flips the tables. Jesus does not bargain over the 
table, asking the moneychangers and the sellers to provide 
a more equitable service, he flips the tables. Jesus physically 
overturns the system.
We are called to follow Jesus, for whoever says, “‘I abide 
in him,’ ought to walk in the same way as he walked” (1 John 
2:6, NRSVUE). So, in following Jesus’s example, we also 
are called to flip tables, to disrupt systems, like those in the 
temple, that perpetuate injustice, but we are not called to do 
this work alone. 
Often when faced with injustice, we as human beings 
are drawn into community with others to process, to find 
comfort, and, hopefully, to heal. It is also within these 
communities that we find the support and resources to drive 
the type of change that we are called to make, to be like 
Jesus and flip tables. To be in community with others, with 
shared values and ideas, even in the diversity of reasoning, 
upbringing, and context in the world, gives us the strength 
to continue on even when it is hard. Further, it gives us 
the opportunity to take a break when we need to without 
losing any progress we may have made. Community in this 
way also makes the vision of a future in which all are seen, 
heard, and valued, not in spite of, but because of the color 
of their skin, the queerness of their bodies, the vastness of 
the image of God we see in the various shapes of human 
flesh, possible and within reach. Even if these examples 
are on a local scale, they give us ideas on how to best move 
forward creating a system that works for all and not just the 
few. And whether we see it or not, we all are limited by the 
continuance of systems that oppress any of God’s wonderful 
creation, even if we are those that are the most privileged 
by it. We get caught in these rigid binaries and static boxes, 
unable to express ourselves beyond these and live out our 
fullest lives. Equity and justice are not problems for those 
most explicitly marginalized by the lack of them, they are 
an everyone problem, and to be like Jesus, to flip tables, we 
need to make them our problem.

This essay will examine the history and traditions behind zarzuela which contribute to how composers portray the real Spanish identity in their works. Through the analysis of El barberillo de Lavapiés by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and La Gran Vía by Federico Chueca, I note the value placed on the working-class people in Madrid and the abomination of Spanish authority and the elite. Zarzuelas show the stories, customs, and values of the everyday people which these composers argue are the true values of Spain. Through the laughter of this humorous medium, zarzuelas reveal the truth about the importance of the lower class to the national Spanish identity

We gather in commitment to address a matter of profound 
importance—the well-being of the dedicated staff, faculty, 
and administration within the realm of Lutheran higher 
education. Our mission extends far beyond the boundaries 
of traditional academia; it encompasses the nurturing of 
the human spirit through rest, creativity and innovation, 
religious diversity and pluralism, and the preservation of 
our Lutheran identity within the academy.
In our exploration of these critical dimensions, we can 
draw wisdom and inspiration from the profound insights 
of the authors in our book So That All May Flourish: The 
Aim of Lutheran Higher Education. In this resource we 
have an opportunity to reflect upon the broader context of 
Lutheran higher education especially among the Network 
of ELCA colleges and universities (NECU). However, as 
we embark on this journey, we must first acknowledge 
the painful reality of Finlandia University's closure this 
year, a poignant reminder of the challenges we face in this 
endeavor together.
Rest: Nurturing the Soul of Educators
In the relentless pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, it 
is easy to overlook the importance of rest. The trends 
of teacher burnout in the academic world are deeply 
troubling, and their toll on our educators is undeniable. 
Burnout not only erodes the 
well-being of individuals but 
also undermines the very quality 
of education we provide.
As we aspire to a state and 
season of flourishing in our 
live we must recognize that all 
of God’s creation need rest 
from our mental, emotional, 
professional, and physical 
labor. The realities of professional burnout within multiple 
areas in our academic institutions are key indications of 
the need to draw from faith traditions and practices that 
support renewing principles. As a network we have the 
opportunity to strengthen and encourage each other not 
to ignore the toll our dedication and commitment to our 
mission takes on all of us. It is only when our colleagues 
are well-rested and rejuvenated that they can guide our 
students towards their full potential. We cannot effectively 
nurture the minds and souls of our students without first 
nurturing ourselves.
It is a recognition that transcends time, echoing the 
sentiments of Martin Luther himself, who said, "I have 
so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in 
prayer." These words underscore the necessity of spiritual 
renewal and rest even amidst the busiest of schedules.

Creativity and Innovation:  
Embracing Change for Growth
Creativity and innovation are the lifeblood of education, and 
they must be embraced wholeheartedly. In a world marked 
by rapid change and evolving challenges, our commit-
ment to fostering a culture of creativity and innovation is 
paramount. Innovation is a key cornerstone of Lutheran 
higher education. Our institutions have a rich history of 
adapting to changing times while staying true to our values.
In so many ways, we must see innovation on our 
campuses and curriculum as essential, not because it can 
guarantee a successful education environment, but because 
it refreshes the fact that we all are called to continue to learn 
and grow. Embracing innovation allows us to remain relevant 
in an ever-evolving educational landscape, fostering an 
environment where all can flourish. Stagnation is the enemy 
of progress, and our role and calling in higher education 
is not just to impart knowledge but also to inspire growth 
through innovative thinking.
Religious Diversity and Pluralism:  
Celebrating Differences
One of the powerful hallmarks NECU institutions and 
growing value in Lutheran higher education is our commit-
ment to religious diversity and pluralism. Our campuses are 
enriched by a tapestry of faiths, creating an environment of 
dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect. This commit-
ment aligns harmoniously with the vision of Dr. Martin Luther 
King Jr., who famously said, "We may have all come on 
different ships, but we're in the same boat now."
As we navigate the vast seas of diversity, we should 
echo the sentiments of recently published resource, "So 
That All May Flourish," emphasizing that each person's 
faith journey is unique and deserving of recognition and 
respect. This inclusive approach not only enriches our 
educational experience but also fosters a profound sense 
of belonging.
Maintaining Our Lutheran Identity:  
A Source of Strength
Balancing our faith with our academic pursuits can be a 
delicate task, but it is also a source of strength for our insti-
tutions. We must remain steadfast and rooted in preserving 
our Lutheran identity within the academy. This identity 
is not a mere adornment but a cornerstone that sets us 
apart in the world of higher education. Our commitment to 
Lutheran values, theology, and social statements is what 
makes our institutions unique. It is a beacon of light for 
those seeking an education rooted in faith, curiosity, and 
openness to different ways and possibilities.
Belonging: Inclusive Communities
In our commitment to well-being and flourishing, we must 
create inclusive communities that foster a deep sense 
of belonging. NECU is expanding our diversity in strong 
ways with several schools growing their enrollment within 
populations of people in the global majority. Supporting 
affirmative action is not merely a moral imperative but a 
strategic imperative, harnessing the talents and perspec-
tives of individuals from all walks of life. With this growth 
we do have some challenges of being prepared to create 
atmospheres of welcome, hospitality, and inclusive envi-
ronments. We are seeing this manifested with triggering 
low retention rates of students, particularly students of 
color, who bravely enroll at our schools. It is crucial to 
ensure that every member of our community feels valued, 
supported, and included.
The Mission of ELCA Colleges  
and Universities
Our commitment to these principles is not isolated; again, 
we all are a part of a broader network of ELCA colleges 
and universities. Together, we share a common mission, 
a commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who 
are not only academically prepared but also spiritually 
enriched. Our collective strength lies in our shared values 
and dedication to excellence in education.
The Painful Reality of  
Finlandia University
Before I conclude, I must address the somber reality of 
Finlandia University's closure this year. It serves as a stark 
reminder of the challenges we face in the world of higher 
education. It underscores the importance of our mission,

the need for adaptability, and the urgency of nurturing the 
well-being of our institutions including our staff, faculty,  
and administration.
In closing, the well-being of our educational network 
rests upon the pillars of rest, creativity and innovation, 
religious diversity and pluralism, and the unwavering 
preservation of our Lutheran identity within the academy. 
As we continue to navigate the complexities of our roles, 
let us remember the words of my predecessor, The  
Rev. Dr. Mark Wilhelm, who said to me as I began this role 
as executive director, "Lutheran education is a manifes-
tation of the church's mission in higher education." It is 
my hope that our mission is not just to educate but to 
flourish—to ensure that all may flourish.
Thank you for your dedication to Lutheran higher 
education, and may we continue to nurture the well-being 
of our staff, faculty, and administration, fostering environ-
ments where all can thrive.
