Bangor Hydro-Electric Company Regenerative Type Gas Turbine Installed

    Get PDF
Opening Paragraphs: The Bangor Hydro-Electric Co has recently completed the installation of the first regenerative type of gas turbine unit to go into central station service in this country. Operation of the unit was begun on Oct. 30, 1950. Increased over-all efficiency is expected from the installation in comparison with non-regenerative equipment. This is due to utilization of a substantial part of the residual heat in the turbine exhaust to preheat the compressed air before it enters the combustion chambers. Article written by Paul F. Kruse, who was the Chief Engineer of the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company. Article is reprinted from the January 1, 1951, issue of Electrical World, produced by General Electric Company.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/bangorhydro_news/1061/thumbnail.jp

    Annual Report, Bangor, Maine: 1951

During 1951, much progress was made toward the construction of a new highway connecting Hammond Street and Main Street. If it had not been for questions raised by the possible expansion of Dow Field, contracts would have been let in October and the highway would have been opened for traffic in the summer of 1952. This proposed by-pass highway has as its major purpose the elimination of truck traffic from the residential section of the west side of the city. At present, the major portion of the truck traffic coming from or going to outer Hammond Street and points west follows a route along Silver Road, Webster Avenue and Buck Street. The first purpose of the by-pass highway is to provide an alternate route for this truck traffic between Hammond Street and Main Street.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/city_ban_report/1002/thumbnail.jp

Report of the Liquor Research Commission to the 95th Maine State Legislature

    Get PDF
To: His Excellency, Governor Frederick G. Payne and Members of the 95th Maine ,State Legislature Pursuant to the provisions of the 1949 Legislative Act creating the Liquor Research Commission, this report has been prepared for your guidance in determining the need for and feasibility of State action to deal with unwelcome conditions arising from the sale and use of alcoholic beverages in Maine. As fully as its limited resources would permit, your commission has delved into the situation with particular attention to the compulsive drinkers in our population who are often listed simply as alcoholics. Our survey has been as impartial as possible, in a deliberate effort to avoid being stigmatized as Starry-eyed Do-gooders by the intemperate, or as Secret Encouragers of Tippling by teetotallers. Indeed, the question can be approached in no other way. The nation has seen the dismal failure of attempting to promote temperance by legislative enactment; it has also seen prohibition succeeded by a rising trend in drinking, especially among women and young people, that holds an alarming portent for the future.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1096/thumbnail.jp

    The Oracle, 1951

Foreword During the past school year the Oracle Board has had as its endeavor the publishing of a yearbook that would serve to recall pleasant memories to the students of Bangor High School. Following the custom of preceding staffs, the Oracle has been changed in small ways to meet the demands of a deserving student body. The members of the 1951 Oracle Board started the year\u27s work by the planning and carrying out of an extensive subscription campaign. The drive was highlighted by the Oracle-Orascope assembly, always one of the year\u27s outstanding programs. The publication of the December literary magazine provided an outlet for talented members of the staff and also the members of the student body. The poems, stories, pictures, and features were a welcome diversion from the hustle and bustle of the fall term. In January the staff seriously began preparing the year\u27s major task -- the 1951 Oracle. With its publication the staff has a feeling of achievement, mingled with a feeling of sorrow because the publication also marks the close of the school year~ and the end of three glorious years in Bangor High School. In closing, the Oracle wishes to thank all those who made its publication possible.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/bhs_yearbooks/1014/thumbnail.jp

    Get PDF
Opening paragraphs: The Bangor Planning Ordinance, which was adopted by the City Council in 1948, provided for a Planning Board, which was to make and adopt a Master Plan of the city. This report briefly describes the Board\u27s recommendations for a Master Plan. After a public hearing and possible revision, the plan may be officially adopted by the Board. Thereafter it will become a guide to the future recommendations of the Board for the improvement and development of Bangor. This plan is not a fixed or final plan. It must be changed and added to from time to time as changing conditions dictate. In this respect the Board hopes that the people of Bangor will offer suggestions to improve the plan. The continual constructive criticisms and ideas of the citizens of Bangor are needed to make planning effective.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1257/thumbnail.jp

Let\u27s Get All the Facts about \u27Quoddy

What is \u27Quoddy? \u27Quoddy is the familiar name now widely used to refer to the International Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project. \u27Quoddy is a farsighted venture in international cooperation between the two great neighbors of the North American continent. \u27Quoddy in essence is a plan to harness the tremendous tides of the Passamaquoddy Bay region of New England and the Canadian province of New Brunswick for the production of cheap, ample electric power. This pamphlet details the plans circa June 1950, which never came to fruition, despite attempts at the time, in the past, and even into the 1960s and 1970s, for the project.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1291/thumbnail.jp

It was Washington, D.C., July 15, 1943. At the War Department it was noted that a new division was being activated as of that date - the lOth Light Division. Out in Colorado the usual afternoon cloudburst broke loose as the journal clerk recorded the fact that the division had been officially activated. A month later there was a formal occasion; Pando, Colorado witnessed the parade and ceremonies honoring the birth of the Tenth. Major General Lloyd E. Jones reviewed the troops.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/ww_reg_his/1005/thumbnail.jp
