Get PDFPlans were developed during 1962 for the complete renovation of the downtown area through Urban Renewal where it appears that the city could execute a five million dollar project at no additional cost to the city (since its share would be made up of the Kenduskeag Stream Parking Project already nearing completion).
A considerable amount of new highway construction was completed in the city during 1962. This included Washington and Hancock Streets, the reconstruction of the Church Road and the Hogan Road, the reconstruction of another section of Harlow Street, the reconstruction of the intersections at Broadway and Center Street, and Broadway and Somerset Street for improved traffic flow, and the construction of 400,000 project started in the summer of 1962, as well as the reconstruction of a section of Hogan Road from Mt. Hope A venue to State Street. Get PDFObservance of the centennial of the Maine Central Railroad Company, the State of Maine\u27s largest railroad which serves 14 of the 17 counties in Maine, is being held at Waterville because it was in Waterville that the Maine Central was incorporated on October 28, 1862.
Waterville is also the geographical center of Maine Central system which today serves from Portland to Eastport and Vanceboro; to St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and also through sections of New Hamshire. Its general offices are located in Portland, Maine.

Bangor\u27s Housing Code Enforcement Program: August 1956 - December 1961
Get PDFIn May 1955, the Bangor City Planning Board received a report outlining Bangor\u27s housing problems and prospects, with a view toward establishing a local housing policy and program. Several of the recommendations of this report have been accomplished. A Housing Code was adopted. An Urban Renewal Authority was created. The City is about to execute its first redevelopment project.
A section of this report is herewith quoted as a point of reference to evaluate the progress of housing, improvement in the past several years. If Bangor\u27s housing as a totality is to be kept from settling into a state or progressive degradation, means will have to be provided to assure; (1) the conversion of the precious existing supply of good dwellings and neighbornonds, (2) the rehabilitation of salvable dwellings and neighborhoods and (3) the studied elimination and redevelopment of certain cancer-like growths of blight and shums in existence in the community today.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/city_bur_book/1003/thumbnail.jp

Meet Joe Sharpe, a familiar figure at Bangor High School. He\u27s the kind of person that people call a good kid or a nice guy. Joe turns up at All Bangor Nite, goes to all the games, and gets his homework done most of the time. Once he was a Student Council representative.
Joe\u27s not an athletic hero, class president, nor a top scholar; but he is the manager of the football team. His friends can count on him to help them struggle through Junior Ex, and to lend them a dime when they\u27re down to their last four cents.
Joe shines with his own individuality. He and other students like him are the ones who really make up a high school class.
I\u27m Joe Sharpe, Bangor High School student. The Oracle Staff has used parts of my scrapbook to introduce various sections of the yearbook. Proposed Allagash National Recreation Area

Udall had commissioned this proposal. Get PDFA Council Chairman is the leader selected by the City Council membership at the beginning of the Council year. He directs its regular and special meetings, officiates at formal occasions and represents the city in other ways as its mayor. It is an honor and one to which any Bangor citizen can aspire.
As a Bangor native, it is with pride that I represented your City in 1961. As one becomes better acquainted with the Oueen City and its workings, he gains more pride in it. Most of its 32.9 square miles have seen changes in the year and many more are now in the building stages. As elected officials, your councillors are charged with the responsibility of seeing that these changes are always toward the objective of a better Bangor.
Most changes, however, are disruptive in one way or another. But, just as grandfather hates to have the location of his favorite chair moved, so we know that a status quo would be much preferred by some. Yet when the changes have been made and the strangeness wears off, it quickly becomes evident that there was a need for the change and it does look better and is an improvement. So it is with Bangor. The times are taking us forward whether all of us relish it or not.
