Looking Up Main Street from Hammond Street, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1909
A view of the 60-130 block of Main Street, Bangor, Maine, about 1909. Back of photo indicates circa 1909. This seems correct when looking at Bangor city directories of that era.
Businesses viewed by zooming in or other magnification include:
G.W. Stevens, dry goods and manufacturer of ladies\u27 underwear, at 61 Main. George W. Stevens is listed in the 1909 as having died August 29, 1907. The storefront almost looks abandoned when zooming in.
C.S. Woolworth, five & dime store, 65 Main.
Bangor Jewelry and Optical Company, 71 Main. Robert C. Williston manager. Store is advertising a close out sale on all jewelry
Frawley\u27s Pharmacy 73 Main, on the corner of Main and Cross Street. John P. Frawley pharmaceutist (who it is listed in the 1909 directory).
Two signs on left side of street advertise Freese. These are from 74-86 Main. A. Langdon Freese, millinery and dry goods.
The steeple for Union Street Brick Church at 126 Union Street can be seen.
Horse carriages account for most of the vehicles on the street, but there is one open top car in front of Bangor Opera House (now Penobscot Theater) at 131 Main Street.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1226/thumbnail.jp
East Market Square, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1880-1885
Looking up Park Street from the corner of Harlow and State in Bangor, Maine, estimated between 1880 to 1885. The lack of any electric poles or wiring is a big clue with this estimation. Also, looking at Bangor city directories from that time confirm the businesses visible during that time in the photograph.
Business seen via magnification include:
John H. Bacon, a printer on the corner of Harlow and State.
Tebbet\u27s Coffins at 35 Park. William O. Tebbets undertaker.
John Lynch on Park, a gold, silver, and nickel plater.
Charles York & Co. a provisions store on Park.
Unitarian Universalist Society Church can also be seen.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1238/thumbnail.jp
View Looking Across Penobscot River to Brewer, Maine, from Broad Street in Bangor, Maine, Circa 1907-1920
A somewhat fuzzy image (a reproduction of a postcard) from circa 1907 to 1925. Image taken from the perspective of the Hersey Building i.e. Bangor\u27s City Hall on the corner of Hammond and Columbia Streets in Bangor, Maine.
Looks out upon West Market Square, Broad Street, the Kenduskeag Stream, Penobscot River, and across to Brewer, Maine.
1907 is the earliest date this image could be because of the tower for Union Station. Union Station was completed in 1907.
1925 is the estimated late period for this image. The December 8, 1952, Bangor Daily Commercial ran this with the caption:
View From City Hall -- Very little about the picture would be different if you took it tomorrow, but actually this post card is nearly thirty years old, as near as we can tell. One difference is noticeable -- down on the waterfront one can spy the topmasts of a schooner, and it has been a few years since any schooners, even without topmasts, have come up to Bangor. The roof of the building where Sweet\u27s Drugstore has been located for years can be seen in the foreground. It\u27s now a flat roof, instead of slanted, and bears a huge electric sign proclaiming the virtues of a brand of beer.
Businesses viewed through magnification include:
J.C. Towle & Co. Grain and Salt at 82 Broad. Josiah C. Towle.
On the far right can be read Jones Celebrated Finnan Haddie. Alfred Jones\u27 Sons Producers of Fish was located at 140-142 Broad Street.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1249/thumbnail.jp
1 Broad Street, Pickering Square, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1887 to 1902, #2
The Bragg, Cummings, & Co. at 1 Broad Street on Pickering Square circa 1887 to 1902. More probable this is between 1887 to mid 1890s, but difficult to confirm. More information about photo is available in another photo in this collection called 1 Broad Street, Pickering Square, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1887 to 1902. This is simply the same building from the same time period from a slightly variant perspective.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1213/thumbnail.jp

Intersection of Franklin Street, Columbia Street, and Hammond Street, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1890-1892
A team of horses pull a wagon down the hill on Hammond Street toward Main Street. The women walk on Columbia Street.
Knowles Printing Office, the building in the center, is one the corner of Franklin and Hammond. Address listed in city directories as 13 Hammond Street. Operated by Warren H. Knowles.
Magnification reveals the building behind the horse-drawn wagon to house Jeremiah Fenno Insurance at 19 Hammond. This business is not listed in the 1890 city directory, but does appear in the 1891 directory. This is the primary clue as to the date estimation.
Also the new city hall, built 1893-1894, is not visible. It would have cast a shadow over the street. It would stand where the right electric pole stands.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1234/thumbnail.jp
State Street Looking Up Grove Street, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1880-1900
The intersection of State and Grove Street in Bangor, Maine. Estimated 1880 to 1900. There does not appear to be any electrical wires, so possibly closer to 1880.
House in right foreground identified as Manning Moulton home. Mr. Moulton, a physician, is first listed as living at 156 State Street in the 1929 Bangor city directory. This seems to be known as 150 State now. The directory indicates his medical office was also at this address. He lived from 1893 to 1956 and is listed as interned at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
The Moulton still stands as of 2021. Homes on Grove Street may also be the current ones.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/1232/thumbnail.jp
Main Street and Hammond Street Intersection, Bangor, Maine, Circa 1891-1894
Shows corner of Main and Hammond Street in downtown Bangor, Maine, circa 1890-1894.

Also, Bangor city directories assisted in narrowing in the date range.
Businesses visible by magnification include:
Adams & Strickland, crockery and glassware, listed at 3 Main Street in the 1893-1894 Bangor city directory. This in now closer to 25 Main Street. The street numbering system in Bangor changed in the early 1900s to the more modern day system. Edward C. Adams and Samuel L. Strickland. This business first appeared in the 1891 city directory.
