Annual Report, Bangor, Maine: 1944
For many years past, each summer has seen an agricultural fair at Bass Park, and Bangor Fair has become an institution in this section. In 1942, the Fair Association, in the interest of the war effort and at the request of the City Council, suspended the operation of the Fair. In the past, Bangor Fair has been operated at the park under the terms or the lease between the old Bangor Fair Association, and the original owner of the park, Mr. Joseph P. Bass, the lease expiring in January, 1943. In the early part of 1944, the officials of the old Bangor Fair Association evidenced no interest in the renewal of their lease, and the Council authorized a new lease with J.R. Cianchette granting him the privilege of using Bass Park for a definite period each year for the purpose of conducting an agricultural fair which could include a program of light harness racing.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/city_ban_report/1020/thumbnail.jp
Dow Field, Bangor, Maine: Album of Photographs Relating to Dow Field, Bangor, Maine -- Volume 2, Part 1
This two-volume scrapbook set of over 1400 photographs compiled by First Lieutenant Annis G. Thompson, Historical Officer at Dow Field is presented in seven parts. Each part has about 200 photographs each. Each group of 200 photographs are more or less related to each other.
These photographs should be of particular interest to anyone knowing a family member served at Dow Field around 1944. If you know a family member served around this time, there is a strong chance you would find a photograph or more of your relative. Almost all of the photographs that are dated indicate 1944. These photographs primarily cover activities on the base in Bangor, such as drills, at the base hospital, at commander\u27s offices, and much more. However, large groups of pictures covering parties and outings with service member families are included too. Service members travel to Mt. Katahdin area, Schoodic Point, Pushaw Lake, Lake Lucerne, and more -- including a snow skiing trip.
The photographs have been compressed so that we could present all of them in a more browseable format. If you have questions about any photograph, contact Patrick Layne at Bangor Public Library.
Volume 2, Part 1 features photos at Dow Field of various construction projects, several airplane nose art pictures (several of the Hag of Hardwyke ), aerial photgraphs of planes on the ground at Dow Field, several parties on the base and drills at the base (including office work being performed while wearing gas masks), scenes of coastal Maine, and a snow storm on the base in December 1944. All photographs presumed to be from 1944.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/dow_books/1013/thumbnail.jp

The 42nd General Hospital in World War II
It is with the hope that your book will aid you in appreciating the part played by the 42nd General Hospital in this War that it is presented to you. A scarcely less important purpose is that of familiarizing each section with the work of other sections and of the unit as a whole.
In after years, its value will increase to each one of us, and it will come to form a tangible link with the comradeship we shared in working toward a common end -- the alleviation of suffering.
Wherever possible, the record is presented pictorially. If some group or department feels itself slighted, the editors can only plead pressure of time and the shortage of film and photographic service, trusting that any shortcomings will be graciously overlooked.
To all those whose kind cooperation made your book possible, we extend our sincere thanks, and to the Signal Corps of the United States Army we are indebted both for many of the pictures and much of the general photographic work.
