23 May 1898 - 3 August 1944.
In World War I with 103rd Infantry, 26th Division, in Aisne-Marne, St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne-Marne engagements. Cited by General Pershing 23 July 1918. In World War II his civil occupation of iron worker became his naval occupation. Died at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, of illness following injury on duty in England.

18 June 1921 - 4 November 1944.
Zest for life characterized him. He met death as he led his platoon in attack in Southern France; an enemy sniper shot him. He fought previously in Italy. Bangor High School, 1938. He was both a playwright and actor. Before entering the Army he was a shipfitter at Portland.

Withee, Aubrey Francis
Aubrey Francis Withee. Ordinary Seaman, Merchant Marine. Wiper, S.S. Pan Massachusetts. 16 February 1908 - 19 February 1942.
He was lost when the S.S. Pan Massachusetts was torpedoed 20 miles off Cape Canaveral, Florida 28. 27 N x 80.08 W by U-128 (Heyse). Carrying gasoline and oil the ship burned and sank. He joined the Merchant Marine as a Messman in 1940. Atlantic War Zone Bar, Mariners Medal, Presidential Testimonial Letter.

Native of Wilton. Graduate of Hampden Academy. In civil life a truck driver. Entered the service, April 1944. Went overseas, September. The place of his death in action in Germany is unknown. His wife, his daughters, Donna Lee and Judith Ann, and his son, who bears his name, survive him.

Gerald Decker Strout. Pharmacist\u27s Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy. U.S. Naval Hospital, Admiralty Islands, New Guinea.
26 January 1917 - 15 January 1945.
From his hospital station he went out on the minelayer Ozark for the invasion of Luzon and was killed in an accidental collision of airplanes while returning, presumably with wounded. Skip\u27s favorite sport was basketball. Graduated, Bangor High School, 1936. Was with a real estate firm at his enlistment.

Sharpshooter and Combat Infantryman. Fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was killed in action at Hamm, Westphalia, Germany. Native of Hampden. Resident of Bangor. Engaged in the oil business. His recreations were hunting and fishing. Father of two children: Nancy Ann Stimpson and Arthur Francis Stimpson. Purple Heart.

Trained, Camp Peary, Virginia, and Camp Thomas, Rhode Island. Landed in France on D-Day. Returned to England, 20 July. Died, Plymouth, Devon, England, of injuries received there on duty. Buried, U.S. Military Cemetery, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. At home he was in the construction business. His recreation was hunting and fishing.

Bernard Striar. Private First Class, U.S. Army. 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division.
23 December 1921 - 29 September 1944.
A 1939 graduate of Bangor High School, he was killed in action in heavy fighting. Monte Battaglia, Italy (27 Sept - 30 Oct.). His Unit outnumbered 4 to 1 and surrounded on three sides, held its ground against more than twenty attacks. The 350th suffered 1420 casualties. PFC Striar was one who made this sacrifice. Purple Heart.

He lies at Margraten, Holland. Bangor High, 1942. Student at University of Maine. Air Medal with three clusters. Purple Heart.

Born on Armistice Day, he gave the enemy no armistice, fighting at the Solomon Islands and Peleliu Island, Palau Group, Caroline Islands, where he received wounds from which he died later at sea. Native of Bangor. Graduated from Bangor High School, 1939. Went into construction work. Presidential Citation. Purple Heart. Navy Cross.
