Overcoming the Past or Rendering it Invisible? Aimée & Jaguar (1994) and the Politics of Memory
It was in the 1990s that research on the issue of “overcoming the past” in
postwar Germany began on a full scale in Japan as well as Germany, and there
has been progress in extending this research mainly in the fields of politics,
education, literature, media, memory and culture of remembrance. However,
research on issues of gender and sexuality during the war—such as the
regulation of romantic and sexual relations between same sex people and those
from different ethnic groups or the regulation of prostitution and wartime
sexual violence—is an area that even in Germany has not gained much
attention, as related historical materials are difficult to access, and these topics
as such are still considered taboo within the field of history. In this paper I
would like to think about issues related to the rememberance and the historical
study of romantic and sexual (intimate) relations between women by taking a
look at selected examples of such relationships and attempts to historicize
them.departmental bulletin pape
