Emergency Remote Training: Guiding and Supporting Teachers in Preparation for Emergency Remote Teaching

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to describe and evaluate the planning and delivery of training provided to help teachers prepare for emergency remote teaching. The broad aims of the training were to help teachers become accustomed to the functions of Zoom, an online video communication platform, and to consider how teaching remotely might impact their teaching practices. The first step in the training was a checklist of can-do statements which teachers could use for self-directed guidance and self-assessment. A subsequent seven-hour synchronous training day then allowed for hands-on practice of hosting Zoom lessons and provided a forum for discussions of the implications of the move to emergency remote teaching. In this paper, the effectiveness of the training is also evaluated using data from participant feedback as well as trainer reflections blended with references to the literature. Overall, despite the trainer’s inexperience of online training and the lack of adequate preparation time, the training was a broad success which achieved its intended aims of preparing teachers for their initial forays into emergency remote teaching.departmental bulletin pape

Exploratory Investigation into Successful and Less Successful Learners of English with Interviews

    Get PDF
Previous analyses revealed that the students in an English program at a bilingual university in Tokyo significantly improved their English proficiency over their first year. Further statistical analyses such as structural equation modeling, however, were unable to discover what factors contributed to the improvement positively or negatively. Thus, to investigate what factors contribute to the success of English learners in the English program, we asked both successful and less successful students how they studied during the first year of their university education in and out of class. The results showed that successful and less successful learners employed no different learning strategies, but two factors, English-speaking selves and test familiarity, emerged as possible factors that might influence the improvement of their English proficiency.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
departmental bulletin pape

The Role of Social-Ecological Correlates of Psychological Well-Being and Parenting Self-Efficacy among Filipino Migrant Mothers in Urban Japan

    Get PDF
Migration experience brings psychological distress to migrant individuals in the process of acculturation. Particularly, women are more exposed to additional stressors in the newly adopted host countries. In the previous literature, social-ecological correlates (e.g., social support, social connectedness, and sense of community) have been found to enhance psychological well-being and effective parenting among immigrants. However, the relationship between social-ecological correlates, psychological well-being, and parenting have rarely been investigated in Japan. This paper aimed at investigating the role of socialecological correlates of psychological well-being and parenting self-efficacy among Filipino migrant mothers in urban Japan with an eye toward developing future interventions promoting their psychological well-being. The SEM analyses showed that social connectedness in the Filipino community and sense of community mediated acculturation and life satisfaction, and social connectedness in the local Japanese community mediated acculturation and parenting self-efficacy. Also, it was revealed that participation in religious activities and neighborhood activities indirectly influence life satisfaction via social-ecological correlates; and participation in neighborhood activities, school activities, and language learning opportunities indirectly influence on parenting self-efficacy via social-ecological correlates. Although the sampling method and sample size were noted as the major limitations, the current study still provided support for the notion that social connectedness and sense of community can have a positive effect on psychological well-being and parenting self-efficacy among Filipino migrant mothers in urban Japan. As a future research implication, focusing more on the strengths and the resource of migrant mothers and their community by using a mixedmethod approach would be recommended.departmental bulletin pape
