2. Description  
The database ICULD-0012 contains recordings of Eastern Tamang produced by 6 speakers in 
summer 2017. All recordings were made on a TASCAM and a Shure WH-30 Headworn 
microphone in Kathmandu, Nepal. Tamang is a Tibeto-Burman language. Western Tamang is 
spoken by about 760,000 speakers.

Dr. Martin J. Lohrmann is Associate Professor of Lutheran Confessions 
and Heritage at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa (USA). 
He is the author of Book of Harmony: Spirit and Service in the Lutheran 
Confessions and Stories from Global Lutheranism: A Historical Timeline. 
He is also the co-editor of 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles in the 
Reformation Commentary on Scripture series.
Gordon Graham is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and the Arts at 
Princeton Theological Seminary, and Director of the Edinburgh Sacred 
Arts Foundation. He has published extensively in the area of Scottish 
philosophy and was founding editor of the Journal of Scottish Philosophy. 
He is General Editor of Oxford University Press’s five volume History of 
Scottish Philosophy of which three volumes have now appeared.
David Fergusson is Professor of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh.

Pana Barova-Ozcan is an instructor of Japanese at East Stroudsburg 
University (ESU) in Pennsylvania, USA. She holds a Ph.D. from ICU 
(International Christian University) in Japanese classical literature and 
comparative studies. Her research interests include Heian diaries written 
by women, comparative studies of women’s literature in Japan and the 
West, Japanese language teaching, and manga interpretations of classical 
Japanese literature.
Sara Kitaoji is a Japanese-English translator and an accredited editor 
(AE) with the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) in Australia. She 
is also a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and 
Proofreading (CIEP) in the UK. Her doctoral research at ICU addressed 
the problems of translating Miyazawa Kenji’s literature into English. 
Currently, she specializes in editing and translating academic texts 
across a wide range of disciplines for writers from diverse linguistic and 
cultural backgrounds.

2. Description 
 
The database ICULD-0004 contains recordings of Drenjongke vowels produced by four 
speakers in November 2018. All recordings were made on a TASCAM DR-100 MK-III 
recorder and a Shure WH-30 Headworn microphone in Gangtok, Sikkim. Drenjongke language 
is a Trans-Himalayan language of the Bodish subgroup spoken in Sikkim. The language is also 
called Lhoke, Bhutia or Sikkimese. There are an estimated 80,000 speakers of Sikkimese 
Bhutia, Lhoke or Drenjongke. Based on negligible phonetic differences, real differences in the 
form of several morphological desinences and some lexical differences, Drenjongke can be 
divided into eastern, southern, northern and western dialects.

現代憲法の目的は、グローバル化社会において健全な市民社会を維持・発展させること
である。ここにおいて、健全な市民社会とは、封建制身分社会・警察国家・戦争国家・全体主
義国家・独裁国家との対比によるものである。健全な市民社会、そしてグローバル市民社会
の具体的内容としては、個人の尊重を基軸とする様々な自由の保障や、構造的弱者（少数
民族，LGBT，宗教的マイノリティー，障害者，女性と男性との対等なパートナーシップ，経済
力を背景とする教育格差の是正）に対する温かい配慮、そして、民主主義的で能率的な統
治機構の構築と運営や、グローバル化した国際社会における平和と人権のための国際的貢
献が必要である。憲法改正問題への基本的視座として、上記のような社会を実現するために
日本国憲法に足りない点があるのであれば，それを手直しする視点が重要である。

現在 90 歳の三宅氏は 16 歳の時の広島での路面電車での被爆体験から講演を開始され
た。さらに講演は、土木技師としての仕事が一段落した 50 歳代半ばからの被団協での被爆
体験を語り継ぐ国内での証言を開始し、そこで得た多くの体験と知見を話してくれた。その後、
ピースボートで世界を回る平和＝被爆証言運動に参加し、ギリシア議会ほか世界各地で行
った証言活動について語られた。核廃絶こそ、人類の将来の帰趨を決める最重要の事柄の
一つであること、核抑止力の概念の問題性について力強く語られた。

assertive and indeed aggressive. Beijing building military facilities on disputed 
islands in the South China Sea have set off alarm in Southeast Asia, leading to 
fears of once again finding themselves on the 'periphery' of a Middle Kingdom 
that doesn't take any prisoners.

科学史 · 科学哲学の泰斗であり、安全学の提唱者である講演者が、災害の起こる要因と
しての人間、つまり人為ミスに、様々な角度から迫る講演であった。「リスク」や「安全」といっ
た基本概念の解説、現代の人為ミスの背景に共通してある Man-Machine System の解説、
医療ミスから航空機操縦ミスまで幅広いケ－スの紹介、さらには、ミスを冒しつつも、機械に
はできない優れた対人行為ができる「人間」という存在の尊さについて、自然科学、社会科
学、人文学の境界を超えた、まさにリベラルア－ツを体現する分析と提言を行った。

This lecture re-examines the relationship between religion and nationalism 
in a contemporary Asian context, with a focus on East, South and South East 
Asia. This new book analyses selected case studies and compares the differences 
and commonalities between the diverse configurations of nationalism and 
religion across the continent. It then explains reasons for the regional religious 
resurgence and asks, is the nation-state model suitable for the region? This book 
also exam-ines the relationship between nationalism and modernity, identifying 
possible and desirable trajectories which go beyond existing configurations of 
nationalism and religion.

Peacebuilding, and the Tragedy of the United Nations Secretariat in 
Rwanda

This seminar reassesses the role of the UN Secretariat during the Rwandan 
genocide. With the help of new sources, it will situate the Rwanda operation 
within the context of bureaucratic and power-political friction existing at UN 
Headquarters in the early 1990s. It will show how this confrontation led to a 
lack of coordination between key UN departments on issues as diverse as 
reconnaissance, intelligence, and crisis management. Yet the seminar will go 
beyond these institutional pathologies and will identify the conceptual origins of 
the Rwanda failure in the gray area that separates peacebuilding and 
peacekeeping. The difficulty of separating these two UN functions partly 
explains why, almost seven decades after the birth of the UN, it has still not

Multilingualism is a typical aspect of everyday life for most of the world’s 
population; it has existed since the beginning of humanity and among 
individuals of all backgrounds. Nonetheless, it has often been treated as a variant 
of bilingualism or as a phenomenon unique to individual areas of study. The 
purpose of this book is to review current knowledge about the acquisition, use 
and loss of multiple languages using a multidisciplinary perspective, 
highlighting the common themes and stimulating insights that can emerge when 
multilingualism is viewed from different but related areas of investigation. The 
chapters focus on research evidence, showing that multilingualism is a complex 
phenomenon that involves a myriad of linguistic and extra-linguistic forces and 
that should be studied in its own right as evidence of human potential and 
capacity for language. The book is primarily addressed to students and scholars 
interested in deepening their understanding of the different facets of 
multilingualism, including the individual and societal circumstances that 
contribute to it, the cognitive and neural mechanisms that make it possible, and
