Flipped Learning in Higher Education: A Critical Review of the Empirical Literature on Social Climate Factors
Get PDF高等教育の学習環境における社会風土は個人の発達に重要な側面である。しかし，反転学習が高等教 育の学習環境における社会風土にどのような影響を与えるのかはあまり研究がされていない。反転学習 は，その従来の講義形式の授業をまさに反転させたもので，授業外の時間に生徒自らが授業内容を予習 し，学校の授業の時間ではアクティブラーニングに関わる学習活動を行うものである。反転学習は学習 者中心や協働学習により得られる教育効果のため，高等教育でますます広まってきている。そこで本稿 では，高等教育における，反転学習が社会風土にどのような影響を与えるのか文献レビューを行った。 その結果，反転学習における社会風土は講義形式のような伝統的な教授法における社会風土とは異なる ことが明らかになった。特に , 人間関係の様相は反転学習においてよりポジティブであることが示され ていた。さらに , 反転学習の社会風土がどのように学習者のスキルを促進できるか議論をした。
The social climate of a learning environment is a crucial aspect of individual development. However, little is known of the social climate of the flipped learning environment. Flipped learning pedagogy inverts a lecture which is traditionally taught in the classroom to self-study format during out-of-class hours, and use the time in the classroom for active learning activities. Flipped learning pedagogy is a growing practice in higher education because of the benefits that may be derived from learner-centered and collaborative learning strategies. A review of the literature was undertaken to investigate the social climate where flipped learning environment is used at the higher education level. This review showed that the social climate varies from that of the traditional lecture environment. Particularly, the relationship dimension was perceived as more positive when flipped learning was used. The review also discussed how the social climate may promote students’ essential skills in a flipped learning environment.departmental bulletin pape

Report on the ELA Writing Courses for Graduate School Students (2015- 2020): The Past, Present, and Directions for the Future
Get PDFThis paper is a status report of academic writing courses offered by the
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, International Christian University in
Tokyo. These writing courses are taught by academic staff from the English
for Liberal Arts Program to overseas graduate students whose first language is
not English. These graduate students are often faced with two intertwining
issues: they need to engage in designing and conducting their research, but
they also have to write up their research project in English. The aim of this
paper is to present the status of the writing courses by providing a descriptive
account of the current program over the past five years in particular, and to
follow the trajectory of how the courses have evolved and continue to develop
in order to meet the needs of the graduate students from non-English speaking
backgrounds. It concludes by presenting an outline of the newly restructured
curriculum of this program that will come into effect from April 2021 as well
as to outline some of the concerns and suggestions for further considerations.departmental bulletin pape
The Sound Symbolic Patterns in Pokémon Move Names in Japanese
Get PDFIn recent years, we have witnessed a dramatically growing interest in sound symbolism, systematic associations between sounds and meanings. A recent case study of sound symbolism shows that in Pok´emon games, longer names are generally associated with stronger Pok´emon characters, and moreover those Pok´emon characters with names having more voiced obstruents are generally stronger (Kawahara et al., 2018b). The current study examined the productivity of these sound symbolic effects in the names of the moves that Pok´emon creatures use when they battle. The analysis of the existing move names shows that the effect of name length on attack values is robust, and that the effect of voiced obstruents is tangible. These sound symbolic patterns hold, despite the fact that most (= 99%) move names are based on real words in Japanese. An additional experiment with nonce names shows that both of these effects are very robust.
Overall, the current paper adds to the growing body of studies showing that the relationships between sounds and meanings are not as arbitrary as modern linguistic theories have standardly assumed. Uniquely, the current analysis of the existing move names shows that such non-arbitrary relationships can hold even when the set of words under consideration are mostly existing words (Shih & Rudin, 2019; Sidhu et al., 2019).departmental bulletin pape
