Perception of Teachers and Pupils on Equity and Inclusion: A Case Study of Four Public and Private Schools in Rural Kenya
Despite the fact that equity and inclusion became one of the top priority agendas in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, major international and domestic policy documents in Kenya remain with less clarity of its meaning and actual practice in reality. Against this background, this article attempts to analyze perception of teachers and pupils to understand actual practice on equity and inclusion in rural public and private schools in Kenya. A case study of four schools was adopted using surveys with 72 teachers and 155 Grade 6 pupils. The results show that teachers in both public and private schools are less aware of and often overlook the dynamics within different groups of pupils in their group work than how pupils experience it. While teachers focus on academic abilities in group assignments, pupils have more
nuanced feelings for working with different groups of pupils. Their concerns are primarily related to the socio-economic and disability lines rather than academic ability. Public and private schools have differences in teachers’ perception on equity and inclusion, the incidence of bullying, the types of victims of bullying, and the way of handling bullying. There is a need for clearer definition with realistic and strategic options of equity and inclusion in each context to enable these values to be practiced in school settings.departmental bulletin pape
Studies of Trends and Issues in Domestic Research on Social Care and School

Using the keywords ‘Social care’, ‘Children’s home’, ‘Foster carers’, ‘Adopted children’ and ‘School’, I analyzed literature spanning approximately 10 years. As a result, it became clear that the issues extracted by this study were that there were very few studies on relationship between ‘Foster carers’, ‘Adopted children’ and ‘School’, and that there were many practice reports and few survey researches using questionnaire and interview methods for any of the keywords. It was suggested that four future research topics were identified: (i) Nationwide fact-finding surveys, (ii) Study examining the relationship between school life and children living in foster care and (special) adoptive
families, (iii) Researches on this topic other than from the perspective of cooperation and collaboration between children’s homes and schools, and (iv) Researches targeting school-related professionals such as school counselors and school social workers.departmental bulletin pape
From the musikalische Bibliotheken presented by J. C. Stockhausen (1758 and 1764;significantly revised in 1771), J. A. Hiller (1768), and Ch. D. Ebeling (1770), one can infer which music and composers were regarded as exemplary in Northern Germany at that time. The awareness of music reception expressed therein suggests that music in Northern Germany was considered aesthetically and qualitatively superior to that in Southern Germany and Austria, as the former had fundamentally showcased its distinctiveness through the music of the “older Italians,” while the latter, on the other hand, had been strongly influenced by the “new Italians,” which was seen as a sign of its inferior quality compared to Northern Germany. The fact that “Germany” around 1770 was perceived differently in terms of music reception between the South and the North underscores the importance of considering the regional diversity of music history, which was still prominent at that time and closely linked to the respective cultural and political contexts. Reading the musikalische Bibliotheken would significantly contribute to advancing research on the composers who, while having played a prominent role in certain musical genres, have so far received little attention in terms of genre history (e.g., C. H. Graun in operas, G. H. Stölzel in church cantatas, F. Benda in violin music).departmental bulletin pape
Triangulating Securitization: Analyzing Media Frames of Refugees in U.S. English and Spanish Press
In the 21st century, the framing of migration as a security issue has intensified,
particularly in the U.S. media. Thus, this study investigated how U.S. newspapers, both national and local, in English and Spanish, framed refugees and asylum seekers from
2016 to 2020, revealing patterns of securitization through a "triangulation" of frames: sovereignty, meritocracy, and responsibility. Analyzing 75 headlines, totaling 675 words (including 120 in Spanish), the study identified key terms such as "border," "Trump," and "crisis," as well as rhetorical devices including implication, vagueness, and irony. English headlines often focused on Middle Eastern and European crises, while Spanish headlines emphasized Latin American issues, notably Venezuelan refugees. Additionally, the contrast between local and national headlines highlights differences in framing priorities.
Understanding these evolving frames is essential for grasping the broader narrative rather than just isolated segments. It highlights how these frames shape and reflect our evolving understanding of refugees and asylum seekers. Moreover, given the significant influence of U.S. media on public opinion and policy, understanding how these media outlets portray refugees also reveals critical insights into the evolving discourse.departmental bulletin pape
The Effects of Age on the Japanese Verb Fluency Task
Verb fluency task is a screening test that shows sensitivity to lexical retrieval abilities. This study aims to establish a baseline for verb fluency in Japanese by comparing data from 61 younger and elderly Japanese speakers. The results show that the elderly group produced fewer verbs than the younger group, but compared to Lee et al. (2013), many more correct responses were produced by both groups. An analysis using the Lancaster Sensorimotor Norms found that the number of clusters and switches was smaller for the
elderly participants, although the cluster size did not show any difference.departmental bulletin pape
