Integrating ChatGPT Into English Education: Insights From a Preliminary Survey and Course Design at a Japanese Science University
2022年11月に登場した生成AIは,従来の教育方法を根底から覆す「破壊的テクノロジー」となるだろう。本稿では,生成AI言語モデルを利用した英語授業設計を目指し,学生に対して実施した予備調査とその結果に基づく新しい授業設計案を報告する。学生の英語学習におけるAI校閲ツールとChatGPTの使用状況,ならびにこれらに対する認識を調査し,得られたデータを基に2023年春学期の授業設計を修正した。2023年4月時点の調査では,多くの学生が既にAIを英文校正のツールとして利用しており,ChatGPTの多様な活用可能性を認識していた。教育界は,この新しい技術の可能性を認め,言語教育の旧来の方法を見直す必要がある。本研究は,生成AIの登場により変わりつつある現代の高等教育の現場を捉え,実践と研究の連動により迅速に授業設計するプロセスを例示し,高等教育におけるAIツールの利活用法を提案する。Introduced in November 2022, generative AI has emerged as a potential ‘disruptive technology,’ posing a necessity for a comprehensive paradigm shift in education globally. This paper presents a preliminary survey that probes into the perceptions and applications of ChatGPT, a generative AI language model, by students aiming to enhance their English proficiency at a Japanese science university. Additionally, it explores the recent advancements of ChatGPT in English education, yielding practical insights for its seamless integration into language instruction. The study examines students’ engagement and attitudes towards AI editing tools and ChatGPT in their pursuit of English studies. The survey, conducted in April 2023, captures the students’ initial responses to this nascent technology, revealing a substantial number of them already incorporating AI editing in their writing practices and acknowledging its extensive potential applications. This paper elucidates the decision-making process integral to language course design, highlighting the revolutionary impact of advanced AI on education. It stands as a testament to the synergistic relationship between research and pedagogical practices, offering strategic guidance for the proficient integration of AIdriven language tools in higher education.departmental bulletin pape
What is Virtual Exchange?: Terminology, Theoretical Background and Future Issues
情報技術通信(ICT)の急速な発展により,教育現場でもその可能性を最大限に活用した多様で革新
的な教授法が提案されている。なお,教育機関では従来の伝統的な教授法に加え,デジタル技術を教育
の場に取り入れた新たなアプローチに挑戦し,新たに開発・普及している様々なデジタルツールを活用
することによって学習の幅を広げている。こうしたデジタル時代の中で,COILを始めとする仮想空間
での国際間または異文化間における交流や共同・協働学習を意味する「Virtual Exchanges(VE)」は,
ますます国際教育の一環として自然な形で教育の場に浸透しつつある。しかしVEは,これまでにそれ
ぞれ異なる学問分野やコンテクストで独自的に導入されており,その教授法に関する用語も学問分野や
地域によって多岐にわたっている。その用語の定義もそれぞれ異なっている。本研究では,VEに関す
るこれまでの先行研究,及びVEという用語を用いて提供されているオンラインプラットフォームに記
載されている情報を概観し,VEという相互的オンライン・アプローチを指す様々な用語について記述
する。また,外国語教育または言語学習の観点からVEが教授法の中でどのような位置付けを占めてい
るのかという学問的・理論的背景について紹介する。最後に,言語教育の分野でこれまで実践されてき
たVEの事例と今後の課題について述べる。The rapid advancement of information technology communications (ICT) has spurred the emergence of
diverse and pioneering teaching methodologies that fully harness their potential within the educational
domain. Particularly, as OpenAI technologies like ChatGPT continue to progress, educational institutions
are embarking on the endeavor of integrating these technologies into their educational environments,
alongside conventional teaching methods, in pursuit of novel approaches. Moreover, educational institutions
are actively promoting the utilization of a variety of newly developed and popularized digital tools to expand
the horizons of learning and provide learners with comprehensive educational opportunities. In this digital era, the concept of Virtual Exchanges (VE), encompassing international and intercultural interactions and collaborative learning within virtual realms such as COIL, has seamlessly integrated itself into the landscape of global education. However, VE has been introduced in different academic disciplines and contextual frameworks, leading to a proliferation of varied terminologies and definitions associated with its pedagogical
implementation. Given these circumstances, a multitude of terms and definitions have emerged to
encapsulate the essence of VE. Through a literature review, this study presents a comprehensive survey of
the diverse terminologies currently employed in relation to VE and elucidates the role that VE assumes within the realm of instructional methodologies. Additionally, the study delves into the academic and
theoretical underpinnings of VE within the context of language education, while also highlighting instances of VE implementation and addressing pertinent issues within the domain of language education.departmental bulletin pape
The Reconsideration of 2016 Crisis of Liberal International Order: Intersubjectivity and Literature Review as a Method
Liberal international order (LIO) has been argued to be facing crisis both in academic and policy circles, especially since 2016. Although it is significant to develop better understanding of LIO and its condition, the conceptual understanding and the assessment of its situation vary among analysts. The conventional wisdom of the crisis of LIO seems questionable since the arguments being made are inherently subjective and nonneutral, despite attempts to make the analysis objective. Some reconsiderations of the crisis of LIO were made to advance the knowledge of the crisis, mainly by sophisticating its conceptualization and operationalization to be as objective as it can. However, these attempts overlook that the inherent nature of international order including LIO is intersubjective, not objective. This article aimed to reconsider the crisis of LIO, focusing
on the year 2016, emphasizing the intersubjective nature of LIO. Although it is mainly
considered as a prior work or a part of research conducted, literature review can be a
relevant method for research by itself. Considering individual works as subjects and a common consideration on the crisis of LIO related to 2016 as something intersubjective, the illustration of the overview based on literature review should be the best method to reconsider the theme. This article found that the entanglement of two theoretically
contradictory elements related to LIO has been causing the complication of the concept of LIO and the argument on the crisis of it: one considering the problem in the function of multilateralism, and another considering the problem with the power and roles of the United States and other Western states to form and sustain LIO. It was also found that the arguments emphasizing the former consider LIO to be an international order based on the denial of traditional power politics in international relations, and on the other hand, works with the latter tendency understand that the strength of the US and Western powers in power politics is what formed LIO.departmental bulletin pape
