    Low sixth grade, Laredo, Texas, age and achievement retardation with possible causes

    In this study retardation is a descriptive term. It refers to those school children who are below the at-grade standards more or less arbitrarily set up by certain measuring devices. These devices are described in some detail later in this research. Retardation implies all the problems of irregular attendance, dropping out, repeating grades, and the performance of school work by pupils in any unsatisfactory manner. Retardation has always been a problem of greatest complexity and concern to the superintendent, the supervisor, the school principal, the teacher, and to the taxpaying public as a whole. It is a serious problem to the superintendent because he is expected by the community-to return to it the best citizens at the lowest reasonable cost per pupil. The problem of retardation is important to the supervisor because it is he who is responsible for the educational status of all the pupils, those at grade and those accelerated as well. He is the one expected to provide for individual differences, and at the same time to make uniformity in the school program. Retardation makes of this a very difficult task

    The Health and Physical Education program will consist of two parts: first, The Major, or Intramural Program; second, The Minor, or Interscholastic Athletic Program. This is not a traditional ranking; it is the reverse of tradition because the author bases the new arrangement upon the rela­tive importance of the divisions to the school child and to the community. Intramural athletics, as herein defined, are receiving greater attention and recognition in the schools than ever before. This is evidenced by the adoption of Intramural programs throughout the nation, particularly in the Middle West and Eastern states. The intramural program ia democratized sports, so to speak, and has made a definite contribution to the physical welfare and interest of the mass of students not engaged in interscholastic participation. It is an effort to give each student the opportunity for competition and recreation in some phase of sports. The Interscholastic athletics program recognizes only those who already have some degree of physical fitness and ability, and of necessity, because of the stress of competition, it must be limited to these few. Intramural Athletics are intended to afford an opportunity for those less skilled to participate, and further, to cultivate in them skills which enable them to carry on not only during, but after school days

    A problem which has interested the author for some time is that of determining what is the best method for presenting drill work in seventh grade arithmetic. In this research the methods of presenting drill in arithmetic have been delimited to two major methods in an effort to try to discover the best method to be employed when presenting drill work in computation and the best method to be employed when presenting drill work in reasoning. The further delimited question, as mentioned above, carried out in this research as to the best method of drill to be employed is; do pupils learn faster when doing their drill work in reasoning problems at the blackboard or when they do their work at their desks? Do pupils learn faster when they do their drill work in computation at the blackboard or when they do their drill work at their desks? The aim of this research is two-fold; first to ascer­tain for the writer's own satisfaction which form of drill is more effective when the purpose is improving accuracy in computation, and which form is preferable when the purpose is to improve reasoning; and second to present the findings in such a way that other seventh grade teachers may profit by the study

    The purpose of this thesis is to trace certain important aspects of United States-Japanese diplomacy relating to recent conflicts between China and Japan. Therefore it has been necessary to make a selection among the events, but an effort has been made to at least touch upon the most essential phases. This work is based upon two rather extensive studies: namely, the development of the conflicts between China and Japan and the development of the Far Eastern policies of the United States. The author has considered it necessary to include a considerable amount of background material to show just why the United States and Japan have taken their respective attitudes toward each other in the Sino-Japanese conflicts

    The common schools of Live Oak County during the years 1933-34 to 1937-38 were recovering from the severe strain placed upon them during the years of the depression just previous. In any period of recovery following a depression there is generally some expense for regaining former status. It is probable that this depression affected the costs of the common school districts during the years 1933-34 to 1937-1938. It is assumed that this effect of the depression was greatest in the year 1933-34. It is further assumed that the effect of the depression diminished year by year. However, this thesis is a study of the costs of the common schools of Live Oak County. A study of the effects of the depression upon those schools is deferred for further and later research

    3D static neutron diffusion simulations of hexagonal reactors using MATLAB PDE toolbox

    This research utilizes the MATLAB PDE Toolbox for modeling 3D static reactors with hexagonal fuel lattices. Along with its other versatile capabilities, this computational tool is capable of modeling multigroup neutron diffusion equations for 3D nuclear reactor cores with a fair degree of precision based on the finite element method. This research’s product is a 3D reactor statics computer program that has been developed based on the MATLAB PDE Toolbox. The program can be applied to reactor cores with hexagonal lattices, such as VVER-type nuclear reactors. The 3D VVER-440 benchmark has 25 hexagonal assemblies arranged across the core’s diameter. The core has one-twelfth mirror symmetry, a hexagonal lattice pitch of 14.7 cm, and a 25.0 cm thick reflector at the top and bottom of the 250.0 cm high 3D core. A 3D model of the one-twelfth core is created and imported into MATLAB. The developed algorithm uses this model to define the core’s geometry and solve the two-group neutron diffusion equations. The model can deduce the effective multiplication factor (keff), neutron flux distribution profile, and normalized assembly power and compare them with reference benchmark results. Based on this comparison, the accuracy and efficiency of the developed algorithm have been validated

    A blood pressure and heartbeat anomaly detection and notification mobile application system

    In today’s fast-1paced world where patients may need to be remotely monitored while they are away or out of hospitals, there is a need for mobile applications that can gather the biometric and biomedical signals from any number of devices and sensors, collecting biometric or biomedical data from a patient. This work presents the development of a blood pressure and heartbeat anomaly detection and notification tool as an Android application that allows fast detection of any abnormalities in a patient's vital based on the Pan-Tompkins algorithm and reports it to the relevant hospital or clinical personnel. The blood ECG data can be obtained from the health tracker sensors via a Bluetooth connection and the patient can enter their blood pressure values. The collected data, in our case, a set of simulated data, will be analyzed for anomalies, which if detected will then trigger a notification utilizing Firebase Cloud functions. This notification will be received by the registered doctor (or any clinical personnel or health sector worker having the same application). The security aspect of the system is governed by the fine grained permission methodology which dictates that only relevant permissions required for the proper functioning of the application should be provided to the application. An encryption method using the Blowfish algorithm is included as a feature of the developed mobile Android application to provide secure data transfer of the patient’s vital signals

    Elements of transformational leadership in the attitudes, experiences, and perceptions from higher education faculty

    The utilization and reliance of contingent faculty has grown and continues to grow more and more at institutions of higher education. Research suggests that contingent faculty have both positive and negative experiences in academia, and one common perception is that contingent faculty are underappreciated and unfairly compensated. Theoretically, contingent experiences, whether positive or negative, may influence their leadership development. This leadership style that manifests from these experiences may have implications and consequences in and out of the classroom. Currently, there is a demand and dire need for leadership in academia and institutions of higher education, businesses, and corporations. Leadership in academia is one of the key drivers for educating, molding, teaching, and transforming students into future leaders; future leaders that will be an influence in all corners of society. The purpose of this exploratory study was to garner, both qualitatively and phenomenologically, the attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of higher education faculty. This qualitative phenomenological study interviewed a sample of higher education faculty (N = 21) garnering their attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of working in higher education, then examined those responses seeking out elements of transformational leadership. Eight themes were identified: (1) leader/follower connection, (2) inspiration/inspirational motivation, (3) support/individualized consideration, (4) vision, (5) intellectual stimulation, (6) charisma/idealized influence, (7) morals, values, and ethics (moral compass) and (8) pseudotransformational leadership. These findings are vitally important because these experiences have the potential to create transformational or pseudotransformational leaders in contingent, faculty, higher education faculty, and students.
