Repeaters and financial cost in the Alice public schools, 1936-1941
No full textIn the average American community today a large majority of the boys and girls between the ages of six and seventeen will be found attending the regular sessions of the public schools. These boys and girls, normally, are expected to spend one year in each of the elementary grades and four years in high school in order to achieve graduation. It is a fact, however, that many of these are not accomplishing the prescribed amount of work each year, with the result that a considerable number are finding it necessary to repeat one or more years of elementary school work, or one or more courses in the high school, before completing their public school training. This condition is causing educators and parents much concern. It has raised a question worthy of a great deal of study, with more specific studies of the situation as it exists in individual schools needed if the whole country is to be brought to a consciousness of the need for some adjustment. The purpose of this study is to show the actual condition with respect to repeated work, with the accompanying financial cost or waste, as it is found in the public schools of Alice, Texas, with the hope that it may be of value as a basis for improving the situation locally as well as serving as a source of information for comparative studies with other school systems

In short, we need education for planning and for planning education. Not until the 20th century did the planning for elementary and secondary education receive much support. The colleges and universities were somewhat better off in long-time planning than secondary schools. Within this century the program of education has progressed rapidly, and with better-trained leadership communities and states are using planning technics to provide for the continuous educational improvement

In working which mechanical impendence, these questions were so numerous that it was impossible to follow each lead and give factual explanation. A great of many questions have already been answered by number of authors in both theoretical and experimental work. No full textAt the close of war in the European theatre of operation in May 1945, I became a part of the Army of Occupation. The close of the war found the U.S. Zone of Occupation, I had an opportunity of seeing a reasonably large part of Germany. Travel with my unit and on special assignment took me from Aachen, Munchen Gladbach and Cologne areas in the very southern tip, and then back to the city of Marburg, located in the central part of Germany. There in the University City of Marburg I stayed for the next twelve months. My travels gave me an opportunity to see some of the agricultural conditions of Germany at that time

"When will your child be born?" came the unexpected question. "Born?" the lady gasped, "He is already five years old!" "My goodness, woman," he cried, "don't stand there talking to me; hurry home. You have lost the best five years." (15-3) Bringing up the child is serious business (9-xi). To one couple, it may mean one more mouth to feed. Through the point of view may be different, the responsibility is the same (2-vii, viii, ix). The responsibility lies mainly in the fact that the parents must help develop in the child a healthy attitude toward the environment that surrounds him (19-xii). This child, as he grows, will be making his contribution to the society in which he lives (19-xi). His contributions may be good, or it may be less good, depending on the concepts he has formed as a child (12-115). This is why the problem of bringing up the child is serious business
Water salinity parameters analysis of the winter garden region in the southern area of Texas
No full textThe increase of human and industrial activities has led to a decrease in groundwater levels and increases in water contaminants in aquifers. Contaminants produce more saline waters, which are harmful for human consumption and affect the composition of soil used for agriculture. Saline waters require additional treatment, increasing operating costs. Salinity parameters allow for the study of groundwater conditions to determine its quality. Amongst these parameters, the most common measures for salinity are total dissolved solids (TDS), specific conductivity (SC), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). The Winter Garden region in the southern area of Texas is underlain by part of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, an underground water-bearing formation which contains mostly fresh and brackish water. Recent studies in the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer suggest a slight decline in water level and water quality in the Winter Garden region. The region’s groundwater resources are vital for agriculture, which is its main economic activity. This research conducted statistical and spatial-temporal studies regarding current water salinity characteristics in the Winter Garden region, as well as estimation of groundwater conditions up to the year 2030 to determine its suitability for agriculture. Research was performed by using historic groundwater data from the Texas Water Development Board from 1950 to 2020 to determine the changes in TDS, SC, and SAR. This was conducted using ArcGIS spatial analysis tools and statistical methods. Results showed small increments in salinity parameters up to the year 2030, which may not affect agricultural activities in the Winter Garden region in the future
