Infectious Complications of Contact Lenses: A Review of the Literature
The use of contact lenses is very common, they are prescribed for the correction of refractive errors that cannot be treated by glasses such as aphakia, keratoconus and strong anisometropia, or as alternatives to glasses. Contact lenses can cause serious complications that are not always easy for patients to manage [1]. Infectious complications in contact lens wearers are a real diagnostic and therapeutic emergency. These infections can be bacterial, amoebic (due to wearing contact lenses in swimming pools, rinsing lenses with tap water or saliva), fungal (due to wearing therapeutic, cosmetic or aphakic lenses, diabetes, alcoholism, immunosuppression, corticosteroids). Infectious complications require emergency treatment. The first line of treatment consists of removing the contact lens and sending it, along with the lens case and lens care product, to the laboratory along with corneal samples and appropriate medical treatment. Infectious keratitis related to contact lens wear is serious and can permanently affect the visual prognosis. Reviews and Sensitization About Cancer in Algeria
Having cancer data is a necessity for several reasons. Researchers need accurate data and updates on cancer for the study of possible causes, managers for decisions concerning the acquisition of equipment and/or development activities or programs for treatment, screening and prevention, and the health authorities to investigate cancer groups, their trends and their causes. Where does the data come, and how is it collected? In fact, all these cancer statistics are collected and provided by the Cancer Registry, from clinical records, and from biological and care institutions. By definition, a cancer registry is an information system and an epidemiological surveillance tool for the collection, storage, management, data analysis, and dissemination on incident cases of cancer, covering a geographically defined population. The cancer registry is an essential tool of any program against cancer. Its primary objective is, indeed, the description of the epidemiological situation, the study of trends and geographic distribution of cases, but it is essential to other areas in particular:
Contribution to the study of the natural history of the disease
Contribution to the etiological and risk factors
Clinical research on treatment plans and prognosis
Identification of needs in health planning and development of prevention strategies
Cancer registries are a primary source for cancer control strategies; they can be a source of cohort studies and clinical trials, and perhaps, most importantly, the starting point for the analysis of survival, if death registration in the civil registry office followed a comprehensive approach, standardized and reliable through the establishment of the mandatory death certificate as recommended by WHO, and provided for the causes of a death surveillance program. Computer-aided detection of simultaneous abdominal organ from CT images based on iterative watershed transform
The interpretation of medical images benefits from anatomical and physiological priors to optimize computer-aided diagnosis applications. Segmentation of the liver, spleen, and kidneys is regarded as a major primary step in computer-aided diagnosis of abdominal organ diseases. In this paper, a semi-automated method for medical image data is presented for abdominal organ segmentation data using mathematical morphology. Our proposed method is based on a hierarchical segmentation and watershed algorithm. In our approach, a powerful technique has been designed to suppress over-segmentation based on a mosaic image and on the computation of the watershed transform. Our algorithm is currently in two parts. In the first, we seek to improve the quality of the gradient-mosaic image. In this step, we propose a method for improving the gradient-mosaic image by applying the anisotropic diffusion filter followed by the morphological filters. Thereafter, we proceed to the hierarchical segmentation of the liver, spleen, and kidney. To validate the segmentation technique proposed, we have tested it on several images. Our segmentation approach is evaluated by comparing our results with the manual segmentation performed by an expert. The experimental results are described in the last part of this work
DICOM’s Standardization in Histo-Pathology
Background: The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard helps to represent, store, and to exchange healthcare images associated with its data. DICOM develops over time and is continuously adapted to match the rigors of new clinical demands and technologies. An uphill battle in this regard is to conciliate new software programs with legacy systems.
Methods: This work discusses the essential aspects of the standard and assesses its capabilities and limitations in a multisite, multivendor healthcare system aiming at Whole Slicing Image (WSI) procedures. Selected relevant DICOM attributes help to develop and organize WSI applications that extract and handle image data, integrated patient records, and metadata. DICOM must also interface with proprietary file formats, clinical metadata and from different laboratory information systems. Standard DICOM validation tools to measure encoding, storing, querying and retrieval of medical data can verify the generated DICOM files over the web.
Results: This work investigates the current regulations and recommendations for the use of DICOM with WSI data. They rely mostly on the EU guidelines that help envision future needs and extensions based on new examination modalities like concurrent use of WSI with in-vitro imaging and 3D WSI.
Conclusion: A DICOM file format and communication protocol for pathology has been defined. However, adoption by vendors and in the field is pending. DICOM allows efficient access and prompt availability of WSI data as well as associated metadata. By leveraging a wealth of existing infrastructure solutions, the use of DICOM facilitates enterprise integration and data exchange for digital pathology. In the future, the DICOM standard will have to address several issues due to the way samples are gathered and encompassing new imaging technologies
How to Write Scientific Journals of the Highest Standards
One of the requirements of a Ph.D. or Master is to write traditional and systematic reviews, critiques, letters to editors (LTE), case reports or case studies, at least one original article, and sometimes a meta-analysis, all with proficiency and inspiration. This presentation focuses on the ideas from research to publication, i.e., how to depict a distinct image in our mind in order to convert our research into various types of academic papers. Also, this presentation provides a general approach and some key points for writing and successfully publishing journal papers. The presentation will also cover some publication ethics guidelines, ethics of reporting questionnaire-based research, authorship criteria, plagiarism detection and how to avoid plagiarism, duplicate publication, and salami publication
Telemedicine and e-health in Algeria facing challenges in medical practice
The Algerian health system operates in a demographic, economic, environmental, and societal specific context to meet the challenges of epidemiological transition. Development of information and communication technologies in this atmosphere allow telemedicine and e-health emergence in the vast country of Algeria. Thus, the country may face these challenges by including them in a national telemedicine plan and making a major focus of global action for the prevention and control of prevalent diseases. The interest to adopt this tool in daily practice stems from an improvement in the quality of communication between practitioners and in the doctor–patient relationship with a possibility of quick access to care and more efficient care pathways. Thus, national goals in fight plans against diseases will be achieved. Telemedicine and e-health projects that methodologically well-defined, respecting regulations and using all means and all available resources, including WHO mobile health, are to be designed and implemented in all areas, especially in the national plan against not-communicated diseases, maternal and child health, old aging health, and mental health. This approach will integrate telemedicine in the health care system whose inevitable implementation can be done on solid foundations and will be actively supported by SATeS
SDR-Based High-Definition Video Transmission for Biomedical Engineering
Background: Software-Defined Radio (SDR) frameworks from cellular telephone base stations, e.g., Multiservice Distributed Access System (MDAS) and small cells, employ extensively integrated RF agile transceivers. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is the collection of medical devices and applications that connect to healthcare IT systems through online computer networks. Medical devices equipped with Wi-Fi allow M2M communication, which is the backbone of IoMT and associated devices linked to cloud platforms containing stored data to be analyzed. Examples of IoMT include remote patient monitoring of people with chronic or long-term conditions, tracking patient medication orders and the location of patients admitted to hospitals, and patients\u27 wearables to send info to caregivers. Infusion pumps connected to dashboards and hospital beds rigged with sensors measuring patients\u27 vital signs are medical devices that can be converted to or deployed as IoMT technology.
Methods: This work proposes an SDR architecture to allow wireless High-Definition (HD) video broadcast for biomedical applications. This text examines a Wideband Wireless Video (WWV) signal chain implementation using the transceivers, the data transmitted volume, the matching occupied RF bandwidth, the communication distance, the transmitter’s power, and the implementation of the PHY layer as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with test results to evade RF interference.
Results: As the IoMT grows, the amount of possible IoMT uses increases. Many mobile devices employ Near Field Communication (NFC) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags allowing them to share data with IT systems. RFID tags in medical equipment and supplies allow hospital staff can remain aware of the quantities they have in stock. The practice of using IoMT devices to observe patients in their homes remotely is also known as telemedicine. This kind of treatment spares patients from traveling to healthcare facilities whenever they have a medical question or change in their condition.
Conclusion: An SDR-based HD biomedical video transmission is proposed, with its benefits and disadvantages for biomedical WWV are discussed. The security of IoMT sensitive data is a developing concern for healthcare providers
Categorization of Emotion Based on Causality
Background: Emotions come in all shapes and forms. Some of them can be external, visible, and clearly comprehensible, while others can seemingly be coming out of thin air. Knowing what causes an emotion is crucial for better therapy and mental health. Therefore, in this manuscript, we address the problem of emotions causality.
Methods: We propose a comparison of three traditional clustering models: Gaussian mixture model, HDBSCAN, and fuzzy c-means, to categorize each emotion described in the DEAP database. It contains over 1700 points, and has no prior label as to which type of stressor the subject’s emotion is generated from. This labelling task has been conducted by a psychiatrist.
Results: The fuzzy c-means yields the highest results, with an accuracy of 57.13%, followed by the Gaussian mixture model at 39.49% and the HDBSCAN method with only 18.86%. Another score computed is the mutual information score which shows how homogenous the clusters are for each model.
Conclusion: The data from DEAP is very heterogeneous and its density is stable, which may indicate that classification would be the better option, in terms of accuracy and homogeneity of the clusters
