Civic participation and apathy in South African Local Government : a case of Mankweng Township in Polokwane Local Municipality
Thesis (MPA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2022The purpose of local government is to promote the realisation of human rights, socio-economic development, and cultural, civil, and political rights to improve communities (Ojochenemi, 2016). Residents are known to be dissatisfied with the poor quality services provided by the local government, which has resulted in unending protests and apathetic citizens. The research focused on the nature of civic participation and the causes of civic apathy in Mankweng Township, as well as the mechanisms that can be implemented to increase civic participation in Mankweng Township and how citizens‟ awareness can be raised. The study discovered that there is high levels of civic apathy in Mankweng Township, which hinders the operation of the municipality, whether it is the service delivery process or the municipality's responsiveness to the citizen's needs, based on the literature, distributed questionnaires, and conducted interviews. Civic apathy also leads to poor governance, which leads to distrust between the government and the citizens. Recommendations were made to help Mankweng Township overcome the challenges of civic apathy; one of these recommendations included encouraging township participation
A critical analysis of the employees' right to strike and repercussions for participating in an unprotected strike : inconsistency on selective re-employment

consequences of participating in an unlawful strike. The study will provide a
brief practical implication of employees dismissed for participation in an
unlawful and/or unprotected strike and the employer’s right to reemploy any
employee dismissed for a misconduct relating to unlawful and/or unprotected
strike.
The study will further make a brief comparison with the labour law position
relating to strikes in the United Kingdom (“UK”). At the end provide
recommendations on how the law on participation on unlawful and/or
unprotected strikes and reemployed of employees dismissed on misconduct
relating to participation in an unprotected strike can be developed and
improved
The role of school management teams towards provisioning of school sanitation at Man'Ombe Circuit, Mopani Education District in Limpopo Province, South Africa

schools’ sanitation infrastructure. Qualitative research approach was conducted to
determine if the SMT members fully understand the role that they can play in
sustaining sanitation facilities in their schools. Primary data was collected using semi structured questionnaires using qualitative research method. Twenty SMT members
from five sampled schools from Man’ombe Circuit in Mopani East Education District
were used as respondents. The study highlighted that provision of sanitation
infrastructure which is not accompanied by effective management of those
infrastructure cannot be sustained. Management was selected as a theoretical
framework to clearly state the duties of SMT members as managers in the school
community they are based in. Areas of potential effective role performance and areas
of potential role conflict in school sanitation infrastructure were highlighted. The
findings revealed that SMTs do not fully understand their role when it comes to school
sanitation
Smallholder cattle farmers' willingness to adopt index-based livestock insurance in the face of climate change : evidence from Polokwane Local Municipality, Limpopo Province
Thesis (M.Sc. Agriculture (Agricultural Economics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022Climate change and variability on a global level is one of the most serious environmental
challenges which exacerbates the well-known vulnerability of smallholder farmers. To
cushion the shock of climate change, risk management plays a crucial role in farming,
and in the same context, insurance positions itself as one of the main risk management
instruments available to farmers. However, one of the key reasons to the struggles of
smallholder farmers in South Africa is the inability to obtain effective insurance.
To this end, the study identified and profiled the socio-economic features of smallholder
cattle farmers, identified smallholder cattle farmers’ perceptions on components of climate
change as sources of risk to cattle production and finally, analysed the determinants of
willingness to adopt IBLI among smallholder cattle farmers. A purposive multistage
sampling procedure was used to identify 110 smallholder cattle farmers in the Polokwane
local Municipality. IBM SPSS version 26 and STATA version 15 was used to analyse the
primary cross-sectional data collected through structured questionnaire interviews.
Farmers’ perceptions on components of climate change as sources of risk were identified
using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The PCA revealed three principal
components (PCs) explaining almost 61% of the variance of the original variables (climate
change components). Furthermore, about 89% of the sampled farmers were willing to
adopt IBLI, while about 11% weren’t willing to adopt and the Probit regression model
results revealed that marital status, farming experience, access to extension services, off-
farm income and land ownership, farmers’ educational level, household size, experience
of livestock loss and farm size significantly influenced willingness to adopt IBLI.
Based on the findings of this study, the recommended interventions include workshops
for raising IBLI awareness, government subsidy on insurance premiums and finally,
increased extension service reach to smallholder cattle farmers.AgriSET

An assessment of the impact of declining water quality on tourism : a case study of Loskop Dam, Mpumalanga, South Africa

of them highlighting the high concentrations of chemical pollutants in the Loskop Dam.
These reports show how pollution in the dam has affected aquatic life and poses a
health risk. However, limited studies have been conducted on the impact of declining
water quality on tourism in Loskop Dam. These studies focus more on the ecological
aspect of the dam. Therefore, the main objective of the current study is to explore how
tourism is affected by the declining water quality in Loskop Dam by examining the
impacts of water pollution on the tourism sector linked to Loskop Dam and associated
socio-economic effects. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to collect
information from small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) employees and
freshwater tourists, and interviews were conducted with SME managers to get more
information on tourism activities, water pollution in Loskop Dam, as well as information
on the impacts of decreased water quality. The outcome is that a decrease in water
quality affects tourism negatively, inclusive of recreational activities, business
operations, and subsequently having a negative social and economic impact on

Influence of primary hypogenous seeds of phaseolus coccineus in cucurbitacin-containing phytonematicides on plant growth and namatode suppression
Thesis (M.Sc.(Plant Protection)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022Runner beans are extremely sensitive to root-knot (Meloidogyne species)
nematodes. Phytonematicides had been consistently used in managing population
densities of Meloidogyne species in various crops, with the application technologies
being restricted to the ground leaching technology (GLT) and botinemagation
technology, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The use of seeds as
carriers of active ingredients of phytonematicides and then drying prior to sowing, is
being considered as another potential application strategy in seeds with hypogeal
germination. In such seeds, during seedling emergence the seed cover and the
endosperm remain below the soil surface, just above the developing root system. As
a result, in phytonematicide-primed seeds, the seed structures could serve as
carriers for the active ingredients of phytonematicides. In cucurbitacin
phytonematicides, Nemarioc-AL and Nemafric-BL phytonematicides contain
cucurbitacin A and B, respectively as active ingredients. The objectives of the study
were two-fold, namely, to determine whether runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.)
seeds would (1) serve as carriers of active ingredients of cucurbitacin-containing
phytonematicides without affecting seed germination under in vitro conditions, (2)
serve as carriers of cucurbitacins intended for suppression of M. incognita population
densities under greenhouse and microplot conditions. Two separate studies were
conducted under laboratory conditions, with seven treatment solutions at 0, 2, 4, 8,
16, 32 and 64% Nemafric-BL or Nemarioc-AL phytonematicide. After exposure to
separate solutions for 2 h, runner bean seeds were dried on laboratory benches for
72 h. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomised design (CRD), with 8
replications. Two layers of filter papers were placed inside each Petri dish seeded
with 10 primed and dried seeds. Petri dishes were incubated inside LABCON growth
chamber at 25ºC and 75% relative humidity. Successful seed germination, viewed as
emergence of radicle from the testa, was recorded daily for a period of 10 days, with
each count being removed from Petri dish to avoid re-counting. Under greenhouse
and microplot conditions, primed-and dried seeds were sown in plastic pots
containing 2 700 ml steam-pasteurised sandy loam soil, arranged in a randomised
complete block design, replicated six times and eight times, respectively. Each
seedling was inoculated by distributing 5 000 eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2)
of M. incognita race 4 using a 50 ml plastic syringe. Originally, pots were irrigated
using 500 ml chlorine-free tapwater, which was reduced to half after seedling
emergence at every other day. Plant variables were collected at 56 days after
inoculation and data were subjected to the Curve-fitting Allelochemical Response
Dose algorithm model. In vitro, germination percentage (R

that runner bean (P. coccineus) is sensitive to Nemafric-BL and Nemarioc-AL
phytonematicides supported by the Curve-fitting Allelochemical Response Dose
(CARD) model results due to most plant variables that had sensitivity values of zero.

Teaching and learning : a phenomenological perspective
Journal article published in African Perspectives of Research in Teaching & Learning Journal (APORTAL) Vol 6 (3) (2022) Special IssueThis article presents the author’s reflections on teaching and learning from a phenomenological
perspective. Drawing examples from research regarding student learning during study abroad
experiences, research exploring therapist and client perspectives on their shared psychotherapy
sessions, and the author’s experience in teaching an orientation course for undergraduate students, this paper considers the following themes: learning via experience, learning in relationship, and learning by doing. Learning via experience highlights the importance of facilitating new
experiences and recognizing that novelty may elicit anxiety for students on the path to
transformational learning. Learning in relationship underscores the collaborative and dialogical nature of teaching and learning. This aspect of learning is discussed in terms of Smith’s (1998) portrayal of original argument, as well as Bazerman’s (1988) critique of academic discourse and its implications for traditional approaches to teaching. Learning by doing emphasizes the
interconnectedness of knowledge, attitude, and application described by Amadeo Giorgi (1975) in his phenomenological study of learning. Martin Heidegger’s (1962) distinction between the present-at-hand and ready-to-hand modes of engagement are also shown to be relevant to this feature of learning, with the implication that the application of knowledge should be a central part of teaching. The paper integrates these themes to suggest that teaching phenomenologically entails attending to the lived experience of students and approaching teaching as an engaged - and engaging - activity
Disciplinary traditions and cultures and how they influence implementation of academic professional development

However, its effectiveness appears to be limited by academic traditions that are discipline based. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of discipline-based research on academic professional development implementation in universities in Zimbabwe. A qualitative research design was
used for this study considering that it provides rich data required to understand the problem of academic professional development. Purpose sampling was used from which 12 participants each were sampled including 2 Deans, 8 Lecturers, 1 Teaching and Learning Centre Director and 1 Vice Chancellor from each of the institutions under study. Open-ended questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews were used to collect data. Thematic coding of interview transcriptions was employed to analyze data. The
study revealed that disciplined based traditions in faculties constrained academic professional development implementation. Academic identities are heavily influenced by disciplinary research rather than scholarship of teaching while development practitioners are described as non-academic. Findings established that disciplinary conditions led to poor implementation of academic professional development programmes. It is recommended that Boyer’s model of scholarship can be used to counter lecturers’ misconceptions about academic professional development. That approach will reflect the expanded role of the academic, based on both research and teaching rather than research of the discipline alone
