Reflective Lifeguarding: The Black Principals\u27 Commitment to Black Student Success
Reflective lifeguard Saviorism is a new concept developed by leaders actively intervening on student needs (e.g., behavioral, social, educational) based on shared intersectionalities (e.g., race, class, gender, religion) (Crenshaw, 1989; Davis, 2025). For example, existing research found that Black principals positively impact the success of Black children, potentially being a form of reflective lifeguarding (Kelley, 2012; Kochman, 1981; MacLennan, 1975; Williams & Loeb, 2012).
This framework is particularly relevant within the field of education, where there is a notable lack of support for Black and Latino students (Cole, 2012). Past and emerging research support this narrative, emphasizing the continuous need for Black school leaders. Thus, the purpose of the current study is to explore whether Black principals participate in reflective lifeguarding when interacting with Black students. The goal of this study is to focus on interviewing a small sample of Black principals in a large urban school district in the Southeastern United States to understand their perspectives on these issues. This will be accomplished by implementing a mixed-methods, multiple-case study design, focusing on data from interviews and surveys regarding the leadership strategies of the principals
Examining Preservice Teachers\u27 Perspectives and Practices with Generative AI and Literacy Lesson Planning
This presentation will outline a current research study exploring the perspectives of elementary preservice teachers and their use of generative AI tools. This study explores preservice teachers’ perspectives on generative AI usage and then examines their ability to use and analyze outputs from the educational generative AI tool magicschool.ai. The presenters will provide details of the study including the mixed methods design and steps of implementation of their research project. Audience members will view the survey instrument, class slides used, and the data analysis techniques employed. Preliminary findings of the study will be shared along with early implications and steps for future research in this growing area. It is intended that audience members will leave with a more comprehensive understanding of how generative AI is perceived by preservice teachers and strategies to effectively engage in activities to assist preservice teachers in using and analyzing AI outputs
Shifting Mindsets through Asset Based Exploration and Application in Teacher Candidates
As many classrooms have transitioned to scripted curricula, mandated materials, and test-focused instruction, teacher candidates often express a lack of experience with observing evidence-based instructional strategies in grade 4-12 classrooms. As Georgia\u27s new Science of Reading standards focus on disciplinary literacy and multimodal learning in all content areas, candidates are again left without lessons to critically examine in placements.
To provide examples of best practices, instructors can utilize online platforms and video collections for students to analyze. By integrating videos with theory in courses, students can make connections between theory and practice, link teaching decisions to student impact, and develop pedagogical knowledge of teaching strategies to apply in their own classrooms.
This presentation will share both instructor and student perspectives and the impact on teacher candidates in working with both undergraduate and master\u27s level students
