    Still Waiting for Superman: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Systematic Curricular Culture during the No Child Left Behind Era

    From 2001-2014, states instituted changes to conform to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandates that impacted the math and reading curriculum, and created a systematic curricular culture that I define as the prioritization of the standardization of curriculum, instruction, and leadership through accountability measures that are tied to neo-liberal and market-driven approaches to determining teacher effectiveness, student learning, and what constitutes knowledge. Analysis of the historical contexts of NCLB by examining the political rhetoric and discourse in the 2010 documentary Waiting for Superman is needed to contextualize the continuing impact of systematic curricular culture on American education. Therefore, questions that guide this research are as follows: 1) How can the historical analysis of 20th and 21st-century education reform policy as seen in Waiting for Superman inform curricular resistance to systematic curriculum culture? 2) What examples of political rhetoric and spectacle education reform in Waiting for Superman are most emblematic of systematic curricular culture during the NCLB-era from 2001-2014? Through the implementation of historical research and multimodal discourse analysis methods, I examine the political spectacle and rhetoric in the film to address which aspects of NCLB-era education reform are still relevant, and what needs to be reformed

    Embedding Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Undergraduate Teacher Education

    This session will highlight Mercer University’s efforts to integrate culturally responsive pedagogy across undergraduate teacher preparation courses. Preparing future educators to teach in diverse classrooms requires intentional curriculum design, modeling, and reflection. Faculty have developed strategies that embed inclusive texts, community-based fieldwork, and critical discussions of identity, equity, and bias within methods and foundations courses. Participants will explore practical approaches to weaving culturally responsive practices into teacher education, examine student reflections that demonstrate growth in cultural awareness, and consider implications for fostering equity-minded educators. This session will share lessons learned, challenges, and adaptable resources for faculty seeking to strengthen teacher candidates’ ability to connect meaningfully with all learners

    SLA All Day: Confidence, Community, and Consistency in CHEM 1211/1212 - The Student’s Perspective on Learning, Mindset, and Peer Support

    Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) provides more than just academic support—it creates a learning environment where confidence, community, and consistency take root. After completing a year-long sequence of CHEM 1211/1212 SLA presentations, I experienced firsthand how the program’s scaffolded structure, emphasis on collaborative problem-solving, and focus on mindset transformed both my understanding of chemistry and my approach to learning in general. Now, as a peer tutor for biology and chemistry, I see those same benefits reflected in the students I support. From my perspective as a participant, SLA was not only about earning higher grades but also about developing the confidence to tackle challenging material, learning to collaborate effectively with peers, and carrying new problem-solving strategies into future courses. This presentation—part two of a two-part presentation—shares my perspective as a former SLA participant turned peer tutor. While the professional tutor presentation highlights program design and measurable academic outcomes, my contribution focuses on the personal and community impacts, showing how SLA fosters growth that extends well beyond a single course
