    Mechanisms explaining the birthplace effect for male elite football players

    Earlier research shows that wide regional variations exist in the success of athletes' talent development but is divided with respect to the role of urbanity: both low and high urbanity have been identified as settings that contribute to the presence of talent hotspots. In this article, we intend to provide more insight into the role of urbanity in talent development in Dutch football. We used public data on the regional background of male elite players (N = 825) and combined this with public data on municipal characteristics from Statistics Netherlands and other sources: urbanity, football participation, instructional resources and population composition effects (migration background and income of inhabitants). Linear regression analysis showed that football participation, the proportion of non-western migrants and median income predict "talent yield", i.e., the proportion of young people that reach an elite level in a municipality. Urbanity does not have an independent influence when the proportion of non-western migrants in the municipality is taken into account. The presence of instructional resources does not have an independent influence. The results suggest that characteristics of the built environment, such as indoor and outdoor play opportunities, may be less influential in talent development than previously assumed.</p

    COPD-derived fibroblasts secrete higher levels of senescence-associated secretory phenotype proteins

    COPD-derived fibroblasts have increased cellular senescence. Senescent cell accumulation can induce tissue dysfunction by their senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). We aimed to determine the SASP of senescent fibroblasts and COPD-derived lung fibroblasts, including severe, early-onset (SEO)-COPD. SASP protein secretion was measured after paraquat-induced senescence in lung fibroblasts using Olink Proteomics and compared between (SEO-)COPD-derived and control-derived fibroblasts. We identified 124 SASP proteins of senescent lung fibroblasts, of which 42 were secreted at higher levels by COPD-derived fibroblasts and 35 by SEO-COPD-derived fibroblasts compared with controls. Interestingly, the (SEO-)COPD-associated SASP included proteins involved in chronic inflammation, which may contribute to (SEO-)COPD pathogenesis.</p

    The group of frail elderly people with a major neurcognitive disorder is growing worldwide. Common problems associated with advanced stages of dementia include anxiety and the resulting inability to undergo medical or dental treatment. A possible solution to this problem is to offer anxiolysis or sedation. This should preferably take place in the patient's own, familiar environment. This dissertation contains studies into the possibility of helping elderly, vulnerable patients to undergo treatment in their own environment by providing safe, adequate procedural sedation

    HandbikeBattle A challenging handcycling event:A study on physical capacity testing, handcycle training and effects of participation

    Physical inactivity is a global public health problem. Individuals with a physical disability are the least physically active. This is a problem because physical inactivity can result in a decreased fitness and health. However, becoming physically active and participating in exercise on the long term is a challenge. For this purpose, the HandbikeBattle was organized for the first time in 2013. The HandbikeBattle is a challenging annual handcycling event in the mountains of Austria. The time trial is 20.2 kilometers long with 863 meters of elevation. Each year, twelve Dutch rehabilitation centers participate in the HandbikeBattle with teams of four to six former rehabilitation patients each. They train four to five months. The participants train together with their team members, but they are also supposed to take initiative to train independently at home or with family and friends. Since 2013 an observational cohort study has started to investigate the effects of participating in the HandbikeBattle. All participants are monitored physically and mentally from the start of their training period until one year after they participated in the event. The results of the study show an increase in fitness during the training period and this increase was sustained long term. In addition, there was an improvement in quality of life, which was associated with the increase in fitness. Moreover, the results gave a good overview of the training load. Lastly, we gained more information about the best testing methods for this population to be able to prescribe the right training regimes

    Systematic evaluation of the efficacy-effectiveness gap of systemic treatments in extensive disease small cell lung cancer

    Purpose The aim of this study is to assess how clinical outcomes in real-world (effectiveness) correspond to the outcomes in clinical trials (efficacy) of systemic treatments for extensive disease small cell lung cancer (ED SCLC).Methods All patients diagnosed with ED SCLC between 2008 and 2014 in six Dutch large teaching hospitals (Santeon network) were identified and followed-up from date of diagnosis until death or end of data collection. For every patient, an efficacy-effectiveness factor (EE factor) was calculated by dividing individual patients' overall survival (OS) by the pooled median OS assessed from clinical trials with the respective treatment.Results From 792 diagnosed patients, 568 (72%) started with first-line treatment. Overall, the median EE factor was 0.79 (P &lt;.001 from 1.00). Poor performance status (ECOG &gt;= 2) and a higher age at diagnosis (age &gt;= 65 years) were independent predictors for a lower EE factor. The EE gap was 43% in patients with both age &gt;= 65 years and ECOG &gt;= 2 (EE factor 0.57). The mean age and the proportion of patients with ECOG &gt;= 2 in real-world were different from those in clinical trials (mean age of 66 versus 62 years, and ECOG &gt;= 2 25% versus 17%; both P &lt;.001).Conclusion OS of patients with ED SCLC treated with systemic therapy in real-world practice is 21% shorter than for patients included in trials. Age at diagnosis and performance status partly explain this gap.</p

    Food allergy is a common disorder in the Western world, with increasing prevalence and substantial healthcare costs(1). Food allergy is often accompanied by the presence of specific IgE against harmless proteins in food, but not all sensitized children show clinical reactions upon exposure. Therefore, double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFC) remain the gold standard to diagnose food allergy, yet this test is demanding. Biomarkers that can predict clinical response to food are urgently needed.</p

    Influence of photodegradation on the removal of color and phenolic compounds from palm oil mill effluent by Arthrospira platensis.

    Palm oil mill effluent (POME) released from conventional treatment systems poses severe environmental problems due to its dark color, its high chemical oxygen demand (COD), and high content of phenolic compounds. However, the possible biodegradation of phenolic compounds and color by microalgae was not well explored. This research aimed to reveal optimal conditions for pollutant removal through biodegradation by the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis. This species was grown under a range of POME fractions and environmental conditions (irradiance, salinity, nutrients) during which growth, final biomass, color, COD, and phenolic compound levels were followed. POME fractions influenced A. platensis growth rate, final biomass, COD, and color removal. The optimization of phenolic compound removal by using central composite design (CCD) response surface methodology (RSM) showed that low light and high initial phenolic compounds promoted the activity of A. platensis to degrade phenolic compounds. The combination of high initial phenolic compounds and high light intensity increased the growth rate up to 0.45 days −1 and final biomass up to 400 mg L −1, while total phenolic compounds were almost completely (94%) removed. Finally, this study showed that phenolic compounds and color degradation from POME were dominated by the activity of photodegradation at high irradiance, while the activity of A. platensis dominated at low light intensity. </p

    Parenting in Postdivorce Families:The Influence of Residence, Repartnering, and Gender

    Objective This study investigates the role of residence (including shared residence), repartnering (including LAT relationships), and additional children (step- and half-siblings) on parenting in postdivorce families, and whether patterns differ by gender and type of parenting behavior.Background Patterns of parenting are indicative of how parents redefine their roles and responsibilities after divorce and repartnering, but extant research has largely overlooked parenting across a full array of postdivorce families.Method The analyses were based on data from Wave 2 of the New Families in the Netherlands survey, which was conducted among a random sample of divorced or separated heterosexual parents with minor children (N = 2,778).Results Residence was highly relevant for parenting in regular care, leisure, irregular care, and influence in child-related decision-making. Repartnering and additional children had smaller effects and it mattered which type of parenting behavior was considered, but they were generally associated with lower parental engagement, except for decision-making influence. Gender differences were only found for decision-making influence, showing that variations in parenting across residence arrangements or between repartnered or single parents were more pronounced for mothers than fathers.Conclusion Residence was more strongly related to parenting than repartnering, and the strength and nature of associations varied between parenting behaviors. Influence in decision-making stood out as a distinct parenting behavior, and also the frequency and obligatory nature of parent-child activities mattered.</p

    Digital phenotyping and the COVID-19 pandemic:Capturing behavioral change in patients with psychiatric disorders

    The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented societal changes limiting us in our mobility and our ability to connect with others in person. These unusual but widespread changes provide a unique opportunity for studies using digital phenotyping tools. Digital phenotyping tools, such as mobile passive monitoring platforms (MPM), provide a new perspective on human behavior and hold promise to improve human behavioral research. However, there is currently little evidence that these tools can reliably detect changes in behavior. Considering the Considering the COVID-19 pandemic as a high impact common environmental factor we studied potential impact on behavior of participants using our mobile passive monitoring platform BEHAPP that was ambulatory tracking them during the COVID-19 pandemic. We pooled data from three MPM studies involving Schizophrenia (SZ), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD) patients (N = 12). We compared the data collected on weekdays during three weeks prior and three weeks subsequent to the start of the quarantine. We hypothesized an increase in communication and a decrease in mobility. We observed a significant increase in the total time spent on communication applications (median 179 and 243 min per week respectively, p = 0.005), and a significant decrease in the number of unique places visited (median 6 and 3 visits per week respectively, p = 0.007), while the total time spent at home did not change significantly (median 64 and 77 h per week, respectively, p = 0.594). The data provides a proof of principle that digital phenotyping tools can identify changes in human behavior incited by a common external environmental factor.</p
