Simultaneous allocation and scheduling of quay cranes, yard cranes, and trucks in dynamical integrated container terminal operations
We present a dynamical modeling of integrated (end-to-end) container terminal operations using finite state machine (FSM) framework where each state machine is represented by a discrete-event system (DES) formulation. The hybrid model incorporates the operations of quay cranes (QC), internal trucks (IT), and yard cranes (YC) and also the selection of storage positions in container yard (CY) and vessel bays. The QC and YC are connected by the IT in our models. As opposed to the commonly adapted modeling in container terminal operations, in which the entire information/inputs to the systems are known for a defined planning horizon, in this research we use real-time trucks, crane, and container storage operations information, which are always updated as the time evolves. The dynamical model shows that the predicted state variables closely follow the actual field data from a container terminal in Tanjung Priuk, Jakarta, Indonesia. Subsequently, using the integrated container terminal hybrid model, we proposed a model predictive algorithm (MPA) to obtain the near-optimal solution of the integrated terminal operations problem, namely the simultaneous allocation and scheduling of QC, IT, and YC, as well as selecting the storage location for the inbound and outbound containers in the CY and vessel. The numerical experiment based on the extensive Monte Carlo simulation and real dataset show that the MPA outperforms by 3-6% both of the policies currently implemented by the terminal operator and the state-of-the-art method from the current literature
Achievement goals and self-regulation in the sport context
Sport offers a compelling context in which social psychological principles make an important contribution to understanding human emotion, judgment, and behavior. Obviously, the sport context is different from other performance contexts such as work, school, and art. However, there are also commonalities. One of the purposes of the present chapter is to mine those connections, similarities, and convergences to help to understand how and why performers think, feel, and act as they do in different performance contexts.Sport offers a compelling context in which social psychological principles make an important contribution to understanding human emotion, judgment, and behavior. Good association between sprint power and aerobic peak power during asynchronuous arm-crank exercise in people with spinal cord injury
Purpose: To (1) investigate the association between sprint power and aerobic power output (POpeakGXT) during a graded peak exercise test (GXT); and (2) validate the prediction models of POpeakGXT based on sprint power and personal and lesion characteristics. Materials and methods: Wheelchair users with tetraplegia (N = 35) and paraplegia (N = 58) performed a 30 s-Wingate test and GXT on an asynchronous arm-crank ergometer. Data were split into samples to develop and validate the model. Sprint power (POmeanWingate and POpeakWingate, respectively) and POpeakGXT were determined. Regression analyses were performed to develop POpeakGXT prediction models. Candidate independent variables included POmeanWingate or POpeakWingate, age (years), sex, body mass (kg) or BMI (kg/m2), time since injury (TSI, years) and lesion level (tetraplegia/paraplegia). The best model was validated by comparing the predicted POpeakGXT with measured POpeakGXT. Results: The best model (R2 = 0.76) to predict POpeakGXT included POmeanWingate, BMI and all other independent variables. No significant difference was found between measured (68 ± 35 W) and predicted POpeakGXT (68 ± 30 W, p = 0.97). The ICC was excellent (0.89 with 95% confidence intervals: 0.75-0.95). The 95% limits of agreement for the Bland-Altman plots were wide (-30 to 31 W). Conclusions: Strong associations were found between POmeanWingate and POpeakGXT. Although relative agreement was excellent, absolute agreement was low. Implications for rehabilitation There is a strong relationship between peak aerobic power output and sprint power output, both tested on an arm-crank ergometer, in people with spinal cord injury. A prediction model for peak aerobic power output, based on sprint power output and personal and lesion characteristics, showed a high explained variance. The predictive model can give a guideline for choosing the right graded exercise test protocol but should be used with caution.</p
Innovation Outcomes of Digitally Enabled Collaborative Problemistic Search Capability
A firm’s use of boundary-spanning information systems (BSIS) can be beneficial for innovation by providing access to market-facing information. At the same time, BSIS use can give rise to information overload, making it difficult for firms to leverage the most pertinent information for innovation. Although there has been progress in developing our understanding of the role of IS in innovation, it is unclear what capabilities firms need to develop to facilitate innovation in the presence of information overload from BSIS use (IO-BSIS). We maintain that firms today are increasingly experiencing IO-BSIS and therefore a thorough investigation of firm-level capabilities to facilitate innovation while coping with IO-BSIS is needed. To address this key gap, we broaden the theory of problemistic search for innovation by proposing a digitally enabled collaborative problemistic search (CPS) capability. We propose that a cross-stream CPS effect—interaction of CPS with customers (CPS-C) and CPS with suppliers (CPS-S)—enables a firm to reinvigorate its internal knowledge for innovation by engaging customers and suppliers in filtering and interpreting market-facing information. Further, we theorize that the presence or absence of IO-BSIS is a contingency that affects whether the cross-stream CPS effect is likely to be beneficial or detrimental to innovation. Based on the analysis of data collected from 227 firms, we found that the cross-stream CPS effect is beneficial for innovation when firms face IO-BSIS and detrimental to innovation when firms do not experience IO-BSIS. We thus open the black box of the digitally enabled innovation activity by shedding light on specific collaborative activities that advance innovation by enabling firms to cope with information overload
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) Practitioners’ Beliefs about Memory
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a widely used treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. The idea behind EMDR is that lateral eye movements may mitigate the emotional impact of traumatic memories. Given the focus on changing patients’ memories, it is important that EMDR practitioners have detailed knowledge about human memory. We explored beliefs and ideas about memory in samples of EMDR practitioners (Study 1: n = 12; Study 2: n = 41), students (Study 1: n = 35; Study 2: n = 24), and researchers (Study 2: n = 30). All groups seemed to be aware of the fallibility of memory. However, a majority of the surveyed EMDR practitioners (70–90%), students (around 90%), and researchers (66.7%) endorsed the controversial idea of repressed memories. Skepticism and endorsement of problematic ideas about memory-related topics may coexist within the same group. In clinical settings, this might be problematic, because a strong belief in repressed memories might lead therapists to suggestively seek for such memories in patients
Energy Poverty and Household Access to Energy Services in International, Regional and National Law
Household access to essential energy services such as warmth, cooling, lighting, clean cooking or power for communication and appliances is increasingly considered to be vital to human development. People’s decent living standards, health, well-being and social inclusion depend on affordable, reliable and high-quality access to energy, but instead, energy poverty is considered a growing concern globally. This contribution assesses how international law, European Union law and national law has so far responded to questions of universal household energy access and energy poverty. It focuses particularly on how states may regulate in favour of universal access to affordable, continuous and high-quality electricity supply, and pays additional attention to the role of private service providers and trends to recognise energy access as a human rights concern. In terms of the latter, the paper provides evidence that electricity access is increasingly couched in legal 'fundamental rights' or 'human rights'-terms, at UN-level, EU-level and in various national jurisdictions, such as Colombia, South-Africa or the Philippines.<br/
Defining the entrepreneurial mindset and discussing its distinctiveness in entrepreneurship research
The entrepreneurial mindset (EMS) is an emerging concept within entrepreneurship research, but has yet to reveal its full potential. Its current understanding is still fragmented and intertwined with other concepts. The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretically informed definition of EMS that is descriptively robust and conceptually distinct from other concepts. By analysing definitions and comparing EMS to other established entrepreneurship concepts we argue that EMS captures both the developmental (ability) and the volitional (willingness) aspects that allow an individual to sense and seize an opportunity. It is the combination of these two aspects that makes EMS unique and distinct from other concepts. We ultimately propose future research steps to advance the understanding of this important phenomenon across multiple contexts.</p
Can decision transparency increase citizen trust in regulatory agencies? Evidence from a representative survey experiment
Decision transparency is often proposed as a way to maintain or even increase citizen trust, yet this assumption is still untested in the context of regulatory agencies. We test the effect of transparency of a typical decision tradeoff in regulatory enforcement: granting forbearance or imposing a sanction. We employed a representative survey experiment (n = 1,546) in which we test the effect of transparency in general (providing information about a decision or not) and the effect of specific types of transparency (process or rationale transparency). We do this for agencies supervising financial markets, education, and health care. We find that overall decision transparency significantly increases citizen trust in only two of the three agencies. Rationale transparency has a more pronounced positive effect only for the Education Inspectorate. We conclude that the overall effect of decision transparency is positive but that the nature of the regulatory domain may weaken or strengthen this effect.</p
The mechanism of disaster capitalism and the failure to build community resilience:learning from the 2009 earthquake in L'Aquila, Italy
This paper reflects on what materialised during recovery operations following the earthquake in L'Aquila, Italy, on 6 April 2009. Previous critiques have focused on the actions of the Government of Italy and the Department of Civil Protection (Protezione Civile), with little attention paid to the role of local authorities. This analysis sheds light on how the latter used emergency powers, the command-and-control approach, and top-down planning to manage the disaster context, especially in terms of removal of rubble, implementing safety measures, and allocating temporary accommodation. It discusses how these arrangements constituted the mechanism via which ‘disaster capitalism’ took hold at the local and national level, and how it violated human rights, produced environmental and social impacts, hindered local communities from learning, transforming, and building resilience, and facilitated disaster capitalism and corruption. To make the disaster risk reduction and resilience paradigm more effective, a shift from centralised civil protection to decentralised, inclusive community empowerment systems is needed.</p
Need Satisfaction and Optimal Functioning at Leisure and Work:A Longitudinal Validation Study of the DRAMMA Model
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in psychological need satisfaction and its role in promoting optimal functioning. The DRAMMA model integrates existing need and recovery models to explain why leisure is connected to optimal functioning (i.e., high well-being and low ill-being). It encompasses six psychological needs: detachment, relaxation, autonomy, mastery, meaning, and affiliation (DRAMMA). While the individual needs of the DRAMMA model have been previously shown to relate to different aspects of optimal functioning, a longitudinal study examining the entire model has not been conducted before. In this longitudinal field study covering leisure and work episodes, we tested the within-person reliability and (construct and criterion) validity of the operationalization of the DRAMMA model in a sample of 279 German employees. Participants filled out measures of DRAMMA need satisfaction and optimal functioning at five measurement times before, during, and after vacation periods in 2016 and 2017. The six-factor model showed good fit to the data. In the multilevel models, relaxation, detachment, autonomy, and mastery had the most consistent within-person effects on optimal functioning, while the relationships between optimal functioning, meaning, and affiliation were considerably weaker. In conclusion, DRAMMA need satisfaction can aid and nurture employees' optimal functioning.</p
