EFL Learners' Vocabulary Achievement and Autonomy: Using Memrise Mobile Application
There has been rapid advancement in the use of technology through which an extensive array of mobile technologies have been introduced to educational contexts. In the same vein, mobile assisted language learning provides new possibilities for improving language learning conditions. The current study was an attempt to find out the effect of Memrise Mobile Application on Iranian upper-Intermediate EFL learners’ vocabulary achievement and their autonomy. To find the effects, a pre-test post-test quasi-experimental study was conducted. Fifty participants were selected from a cluster of 110 students. The Quick placement test as a test of homogeneity was administered to select the upper intermediate learners. Accordingly, 25 participants for each of the experimental and control groups were selected. Memrise Mobile Application was employed during the treatment period for teaching the 504 Absolutely Essential Words book to the experimental group while the control group was instructed the textbook of 504 Absolutely Essential Words. The intervention continued for a period of 8 weeks. A researcher-made vocabulary test and Zhang and Li’s (2004) standardized questionnaire on autonomy were administered. For the qualitative data collection, a semi-structured interview was conducted to determine the participants’ attitudes. An Independent T-test was run the results of which revealed a significant difference between the two groups in vocabulary achievement. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in autonomy. Moreover, based on the qualitative data it was concluded that the experimental group participants were more motivated holding a more positive attitude
Contingency, Convergence, and Divergence of Teachers’ Questions In Classroom Interactions
The purpose of this study was to analyze questioning activity uttered by EFL teachers in terms of contingency, convergence, and divergence in their interactions with students. Data were gathered from six chosen EFL teachers’ questions teaching to college students, hereupon were attentively transcribed and analyzed using Conversation Analysis (CA) principle. The results found that contingency questions were in the form of extending, disputing, transforming, and repeating former utterances through clarification, display, and referential questioning types. Apart from contingency, convergence appearing in teacher questions might flourish students’ responses through display questions. Meanwhile, divergent questions tend to enlarge the talks. The seemingly endless “questioning problems†improvising limitless further research studies therewith, employing more data sources in a different methodology as well as the perspective of analysis are suggested as it directly affects the teaching-learning process
Identity Construction Portrayed from Linguistic Features on Justin Bieber’s Instagram Fan Talks
Being a fan is another way of gaining an identity, and the fans' identity can be analyzed from the linguistic features used in fan talks. The present study aims to identify any identities detected from the fans’ linguistic repertoires when admiring their idols. This qualitative study is conducted by collecting the fan talks in Justin Bieber fan groups on Instagram. The use of social media promotes the increasing number of fans and encourages them to declare their affection textually. The obtained data is analyzed based on three elements of linguistic units; words, themes, and concepts. After obtaining the analysis from the elements of units, the study then shapes the relevant categories constructing the fans’ identities. The result reveals that those fans are identified with sisterhoods, sympathy, and support, for their idol, Justin Bieber, and for each other. Those natures of being fans eventually compose them into dedicated and intimate fans. Furthermore, those fans are also excellent at expressing sympathy and jokes using translingual practice. Translingual practice is also attached in the talks as those fan use varieties of English, Bahasa Indonesia, and heritage languages
Applying the English Simple Code to Improve Indonesian Students' Communicative Speaking Ability and Their Motivation
The study aims to improve students’ communicative speaking and motivation using the simple code theory. It was action research. The research procedure consisted of identifying the students’ problems, designing the plans, applying the classroom practice expression (suitable with simple code), observing, and reflecting on each cycle. The subject was 20 students who have the lowest mark in communicative speaking ability and motivation in the pre-observation. Data were collected through observation, tests, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation and were analyzed using the descriptive quantitative, and qualitative. The English Simple Code could improve students’ communicative speaking ability and motivation in grade VIII of SMP Yapis Biak. it is also supported by the result of speaking tests and questionnaires. There are some findings; 1) implementing the classroom practice expression can help the teacher to provide a simpler language for students; 2) teacher-talk and interlanguage-talk are useful for acquiring English at the low-intermediate level; 3) emphasizing the activities of repetition drill and acting from a script can provide a prefabricated routine to prefabricated pattern and develop their fluency simultaneously; 4) teacher‘s role can improve the communicative speaking in performance; 5) delayed feedback is very useful to encourage students’ low affective filter in the learning process, so they got the high confidence and motivation in the second language acquisition. Thus, Theoretically, the English simple code can provide a good contribution to learning strategy in the classroom. Then, the teacher can use classroom practice expression, various activities, and delayed feedback to acquire English as the target language
"Holy Moly!" Positive and Negative Connotations of Swear Words in A Popular Western Animated Movie
The use of swear words is common and even popular in movies for adult viewers. However, misunderstanding and ignorance of the intended viewers can cause younger viewers to be exposed to movies with various profanities. The Simpsons, an animated movie, is a good example of this phenomenon. This animated movie is known to contain obscene language expressions which can be mistakenly assumed to be intended for younger viewers. This study sought to identify the kinds and purposes of expletives used in The Simpsons. The current study used Hughes’ framework to analyze the types of swear words, and Andersson and Trudgill's framework was used to analyze their functions. Data were gathered from seven episodes drawn from different seasons of the animated series. Of 102 swear words found in the dialogues of the episodes, seven types of swear words were identified, including anatomical insult, excrement, sexual intercourse, personal background, mental illness, animal term, and religious oath. Additionally, four swearing meanings and functions were discovered abusive, auxiliary, expletive, and humorous. Therefore, it is expected that general readers will express themselves more thoughtfully, be able to identify the target audience for movies, and make more informed decisions when choosing movies for younger audiences
Extensive Reading as a Gateway to Create Research Gap: Valuable Lessons from Indonesian Expert Authors
Identifying research gaps from the extensive reading process is an inevitable choice for researchers in any field. This study aims to explore various approaches in identifying research gaps that have the potential to become elements of novelty. By using a grounded theory approach, the research reconstructs the cognitive experiences of a number of Indonesian expert authors in identifying research gaps. The results show that scientific journals as the primary source are accessed from the subscription data center; discuss and conduct knowledge sharing with expert groups; bibliography mapping by establishing a basic reference to avoid getting out of the focus of the research topic; state of the art and novelty elements will be seen from the extensive reading; using software to synthesize the literature review. It concludes that the research gap as the forerunner of the novelty element can only be done through an extensive reading process. Through extensive reading allows researchers or scientific writers to find many research gaps that can be explored
Translation Procedures done by Visually Impaired Translator: An Annotated Study
In understanding a language, people should consider the context usage such the cultural aspect and structure of the language itself. One of the study in translation is annotated translation. Jenny William and Andrew Chesterman reveal annotated translation is a translation with commentary. In this research, the researchers are challenged to know her ability in transferring Indonesian document, “Peraturan Gubernur Jawa Tengah No. 11 Tahun 2017â€, a regulation of Central Java Governor to English by using annotated translation. This document contains an important information about fulfilling disabled people rights in Central Java. The researchers applied Larson’s theory in rendering the document. The translation process can be explored into 8 steps, those are preparation, analysis, transfer, initial draft, reworking initial draft, testing, polishing, and preparing the manuscript for the publisher. However, the researchers combined the processes by adding Agus Sri Giyanti’s own procedures as she is a visually impaired translator who was involved in this research. The procedures are converting the data and comprehending the text. This research also examines the classification of disability terminologies and their techniques used in translating the terms in order to establishing acceptable translation. In order to analyze the data, the researchers applied introspective and retrospective methodology. Introspective methodology is a method which is almost similar to the introspection of personal work. A retrospective study examines the factors of a causing problem by looking backward from the beginning of the study. This study firstly, aims at giving explanation for the disability terms on the Pergub Jawa Tengah No. 11 Tahun 2017. Secondly, to evaluate the ability of researcher in translating Indonesian regulation into English naturally. Last, since one of the researchers is a visually impaired translator, hopefully this study may provide some information on how the novice translator with visual impairment could translate Indonesian text into the English one independently
Language Use on Social Media: Reflection on Verbal Behavior and Cultural Identities of State Islamic University Undergraduates
This study aims to identify the verbal behavior characteristics of Islamic university students with the use of Facebook in order to determine the identity forms that become a representation of their language aspects. Qualitative method was applied to objectively describe the social practices, and the varying issues and objectives of linguistic features that are generated and interpreted in these discourses. The data was procured, by using content analysis and observation, from the discourses of students at State Islamic University Imam Bonjol in the form of Facebook status posts and comments written in Facebook groups. The analysis was conducted following Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis with a Critical Linguistics Approach. The results showed that the language features of the students contain some characteristics that appear in the form of abbreviations or acronyms, and the insertion of elements of foreign languages mostly dominated by features of Arabic. It was also found that the status and comments of the students focused on five dominant issues: religious, university, personal, social and cultural, and national issues. It was concluded that situational, institutional, and cultural contexts influenced the students’ production of particular discourse on Facebook. Features, issues, and discourse context identified through language used by the students had become one of many ways to recognize an Islamic university student. This ability to identify a particular student is due to the language used as a medium of communication to provide space for students to create, and directly or indirectly provide extensive information about the identity of the speakers
Video-Based Tasks in Strengthening Speaking Skills of EFL College Students
All teachers, including speaking instructors, should be able to select the proper interactive media for students' speaking practice. Video-assisted learning tasks in the speaking class have not been explored extensively, despite the reality that video-based tasks are an appropriate choice for students to enhance their speaking ability. This study sought to examine the Effect of video-based tasks on students' speaking skills. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was employed, and the speaking scoring rubric served as the research instrument. Both the experimental group and the control group were comprised of participants. Researchers gave pre-and post-tests to identify the impact of the video-based tasks technique on students' speaking skills. Using a simple random sampling technique, 56 students from the English study program in the first grade at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng comprised the research sample; then, the data were analyzed by using a t-test with the assistance of the SPSS 24.0 program. The data analysis of the average student score in the experimental and control groups revealed that the experimental group's average score (80,29) was higher than the control group's average score (67,57). This result demonstrates the significant effects of video-based tasks in teaching speaking. The researchers concluded that video-based tasks were helpful for teaching speaking skills. Moreover, video-based tasks significantly impact students' ICT skills, learning independence, and self-evaluation development. The logical implication of this study's findings is that EFL teachers should use videos to teach English, particularly speaking skills, because it has been demonstrated to have a favorable effect on the respondents' speaking ability
Examining Teachers' Perceptions of E-Learning Tools: A Survey from Indonesian EAP Classrooms
Given the fact that online teaching has been widely implemented across the globe during this Covid-19 pandemic, teachers are required to have a high level of IT skills to be able to conduct online teaching. It is without exception that EAP (English for Academic Purpose) teachers need to familiarize themselves with electronic devices due to the benefits they have to offer in an e-learning environment. The current study aims at examining teachers’ perceptions of using e-learning tools in the context of Indonesian EAP classrooms. Forty-five Indonesian EAP teachers participated in the current study with different ages, academic backgrounds, and lengths of EAP teaching experiences. The instruments used to collect the research data were an online survey and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that video and VLEs were the two most commonly-used e-learning tools among the teachers with “self-taught†and “colleagues†being the two most favorite approaches the teachers have employed to learn such tools. Besides, promoting student engagement and developing learner autonomy were perceived as positive impacts of using e-learning tools by the teachers. Pedagogical implications of this study’s findings suggested that school authorities should organize more regular pre-service teacher training programs with the purpose to help novice teachers to improve their IT skills. Besides, e-learning tools should be more used in online teachings due to the benefits they have to offer for promoting student engagement and facilitating learner autonomy. A number of limitations in the current study are also presented along with some suggestions for future studie
