However, students are confused about using synonyms and antonyms collectively. The implementation of narrative text structure was also achieved. In addition, from students` point of view, the elements of cohesive devices need to be studied further as a lack of understanding of the devices affects their writing skills

This study aims to find linguistic evidence that is able to act as legal evidence in determining the genuineness of a suicide note. The data sources were written and digital suicide notes from Indonesia. The data were collected from social media through documentation. The data collected were graphology and lingual units that indicate the linguistic features of a genuine suicide note. The units were seen from their structure, meaning, and context to determine the motivation. The data were analyzed through referential identity, orthography identity, and distributional methods from descriptive-qualitative and descriptive-quantitative approaches based on linguistic theories. The theories applied were intertextuality, meaning, linguistic features of suicide notes, the context of the situation, and generative transformation. The findings show that written and digital suicide notes, as well as posts on the victim’s social media, provide evidence that the note is genuine and written by the victim. The evidences are recursive graphology, interrelated propositions, and linguistic features of a genuine suicide note. The motivations for suicide are derived from the victim’s self-blaming, his acknowledgment of his inability to help himself from financial and mental issues, and a constant feeling of being a disappointment to people who had supported him

In the post-COVID-19 era, lecturers frequently employ internet tools to facilitate learning. However, the majority of speech act research to date has been conducted using data from online learning platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Microsoft Teams. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the occurrence of illocutionary speech acts used by lecturers in the Statistics for Language Research course. Descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study to analyze data obtained from the speech characteristics in messages posted in the Statistics for Language Research (SLR) course on the LMS and conversations between the lecturer and students recorded on Microsoft Teams. Data analysis was conducted based on the speech acts theory from Searle (1969). The study's findings showed that the courses employed four different illocutionary speech patterns. The study's findings revealed that the courses utilized four distinct illocutionary speech patterns. The most frequent occurrences were noted in assertive, expressive, directive, and commissive speech acts. From the data, it is evident that assertive speech acts are the dominant type. Furthermore, commissive speech acts were involved in the LMS, primarily focusing on scheduling plans for class. To conclude, it is implied that the recordings highlighted assertive speech acts as the dominant type, which was mainly utilized for explaining materials to students

This paper reports on the results of a study aiming to investigate the student’s ability to write recount text of a university student in Bandung. The study was conducted using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), especially functional grammar, in terms of the Transitivity, Mood and Modality system. The study used a case study on text analysis. A text, which is a recount text written by a higher achiever university student, was analysed using the Transitivity, Mood and Modality system. In terms of the Transitivity system, the result indicates the writer’s adequate syntactic compression and rich lexico-grammatical patterns. Moreover, in terms of the Mood and Modality system, the text shows the writer’s ability to infuse, temper, negotiate, and constrain the experiential meanings in the Mood that is in focus. Hence, the writer is categorized as a mature and critical writer, and the text is appropriate to be used as a model text. Research on text analysis using SFL of different genres of text and how the teaching of writing should be conducted to help improve students’ writing ability is recommended

This research aims to identify appraisal devices in two editorial texts in the Javanese magazine Panjebar Semangat on the news texts of Ferdy Sambo case entitled Kasus Sambo Isih Dawa and Ganjaran Murwat Tumrap Kejujuran and describe the ideology of the author of the editorial text. Data were analyzed using the Appraisal System in Functional Systemic Linguistics, including Attitude, Graduation, and Engagement. The results of the appraisal analysis on the first text are 69 attitudes data from 68 clauses. A total of 69 attitudes data were found, consisting of 33 positive attitudes and 36 negative attitudes. Monogloss data with 44 data dominate these attitudes compared to heterogloss data with 25 data. In terms of Graduation, journalists used the intensifier type only eight times. For the second text, 55 attitudes data from 48 clauses. The total of 55 data was dominated by positive evaluations of 43 data, while there were only 12 negative evaluations. It can be interpreted that this editorial text has a very positive nuance. The text is dominated by monogloss data, namely 47 data, compared to heterogloss data, which is only 8 data. The outcomes of the analysis conducted on the editorial texts within the Panjebar Semangat Javanese magazine indicate a predominant reliance on judgment as the principal method of Appraisal, succeeded by appreciation and affect. The analysis explicitly emphasizes the assessment of individual character traits, with Richard, Sambo, and Putri identified as the primary subjects of evaluation. This finding underscores the potential of news as a mechanism for the exercise of social control, with the deployment of judgment serving to consolidate specific societal values and beliefs. This editorial text makes journalists themselves the dominant source of evaluators. In terms of Graduation, journalists also tend to increase their Attitude appraisal using intensifiers. The dominance of monogloss in the editorial text is linguistic evidence that the journalist deliberately composed the editorial text using the point of view of himself

This article endeavors to scrutinize the creation and functionalities of interrogative constructions, with a specific emphasis on the Makassar Language. The research design employed in this study involved the use of primary sources and followed a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through conversations with Makassar participants. To analyze the syntactic data, the study adopted X-Bar Theory as its theoretical foundation, which was then depicted in the form of syntax trees. The findings of this study indicated that the Makassar Language serves two grammatical functions, namely as a specifier and a complement. The highest level of projection in this structure was the Complementizer Phrase/CP. The distinction between these functions lay in the placement of question words. When a question word was positioned at the beginning of a sentence, it functioned as a specifier and followed the interrogative structure rule of QW + Subject + Predicate + Adv (optional). On the other hand, question words that required an answer other than the subject or were positioned at the end of a sentence were referred to as complementary functions. In this function, the researcher identified the pattern where the structure was written as Subject + Predicate + QW. X-Bar theory also helps in teaching syntax which needs a lot practice including creating tree diagrams of sentences to parse each constituent that requires a platform or program that can lead the students to diagrammin

A thesis defense examination (TDE) involves the ability to defend the research and to orally explain the thesis. However, it is not easy to do them in front of the examiners. The purposes of this qualitative study are to identify the speaking challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in their TDE and to describe the strategies they employed to deal with encountered challenges. To achieve the purposes, guided by an interview protocol, a semi-structured interview was conducted to elicit the experiences of five EFL students in their thesis defense. Through thematic analysis, we identified two main themes of EFL students’ speaking challenges in TDE, including internal challenges (low self-confidence, limited vocabulary and lack of pronunciation) and external challenges (serious examiners and unpredictable questions). In order to deal with the speaking challenges, the participants employed Self management strategies (taking a deep breath, mixing languages and looking at notes) and confirmation strategies (asking for clarification and asking for repeating questions)
