    BBC Radio Drama Series Cabin Pressure: Abu Dhabi for Giving Listening Exposure to Students: A View from Humour Perspective

    Using authentic materials to give listening exposure is essential to improve English language learners’ listening skill and using radio is one way to do so. To reduce anxiety in listening, choosing humorous material can be done as humour has been proven beneficial in classroom context, for example, in reducing stress. Using the partial result of a study conducted by the same author and completed by library study about ethics of using humour in the classroom, this study is to investigate whether verbal humour found in BBC Radio Drama Series Cabin Pressure: Abu Dhabi is suitable to be used in classroom context. Analysing every type verbal humour found in the radio drama, this study points out that verbal humour found in BBC Radio Drama Series Cabin Pressure: Abu Dhabi is generally not appropriate to be used in classroom because it has a quite high number of inappropriate verbal humour, such as sarcasm and satire.Keywords: listening exposure, verbal humour, appropriateness

    Students’ Perspectives towards Innovation of Technology in Teaching and Learning of Language

    This study provides a discussion of the innovations, in particular students’ perspectives towards the use of technology in teaching and learning. The study aimed to (1) identify methods of teaching and learning that can be applied in the classroom to engage students, (2) to determine factors in selecting the methods of teaching and learning by respondents. The data of this study were collected through questionnaire. The respondents of the study consisted of 150 undergraduate students from various programs aged between 19 and 23 at Universiti Putra Malaysia. The race or ethnicity of the respondents is disregarded as it is irrelevant to the objectives of the study. The results were presented in qualitative and quantitative. From 7 types or options of technological innovation listed, all of the respondents (100%) tend to prefer the use of various media as well as computer-assisted teaching as innovations in teaching and learning. Meanwhile, a total of 139 respondents (93%) prefer the use of overhead projector and the use of VCD in the classroom. 123 students (82%) choose the video teleconferencing approach, 113 students (75%) choose the use of interactive video and 90 of the respondents (60%) favour the use of printed media such as advertisements in newspapers, magazines and etc. In line with the development of technology, innovation in teaching and learning is viewed as a prerequisite in optimizing the output of education. This study also shows to the importance of the innovation to ensuring the continuity of education

    Exploring Students Use of Facebook in Formal Learning Contexts

    This qualitative study aims to explore the use of Facebook environment in narrative writing. Data were collected from students’ narrative writing and focus group interview. The essays were analysed based on Spandel Assessment Scale (2005).The findings revealed that eventhough  students improved their narrative writing, there was lack of in-depth discussion to construct knowledge. It further  proposed that teacher needs to facilitate and guide students as time, space and resources are available online. The students indicated that Facebook was beneficial as it was a convenient  and engaging writing platform. Students also pointed the availability of web-resources to enhance their writing.There were more positive experiences and fewer negative experiences. Limitations of the study were also discussed along with suggestions for future research

    The Implementation of British Parliamentary Debating in Mulawarman Debate Society (MDS)

    In English debate, the students will be exposed to the real problems facing a society or a nation.  The students are required to be able to give a strong and reasonable statement and solution so that they can practice English and convince the public that their idea will be expressed freely. This study found that there were some differences related to the implementation of British Parliamentary debating system, such us the differences of the amount of debater and adjudicator and length of speech. Those differences actually did not give bad effect significantly during the observation because of during observations, each member acted his or her role as well as the regulation of British Parliamentary debating system. It can be said that they had fulfilled their role fulfillment as debater, time keeper or the speaker and as adjudicator in every single debating practice. Beside the differences mentioned above, everything related to the implementation of British Parliamentary debating system in Mulawarman Debating Society were the same as the standard regulation of the British Parliamentary Debating System. For instance, there was case building for fifteen minutes before debating, the debater delivered POI, both accepted and declined it, and in the debate practice of MDS, the adjudication was also done by the adjudicator through giving verbal adjudication and ranking the team. The motion was also given by the adjudicator in the debate practice of MDS

    An Investigation into the Educational Philosophy and Spirituality of Iranian EFL Teachers

    Although philosophy and spirituality are related to various branches of disciplines, they have not been subject to focused attention in foreign language teaching. In this paper, schools of educational philosophy, and spirituality in education were connected together to present the stance, viewpoint, and practice of these two constructs in English as foreign language (EFL) Iranian educators. Results indicated that the dominant philosophy of education of Iranian EFL teachers was progressive education. Furthermore, combination of progressive and humanistic philosophies and humanistic philosophy were to some extent established a balance with progressivism. None of the participants practice spirituality in classrooms. By illuminating the spiritual language of humanistic and progressive philosophies, we may conclude that the nature and spiritual discourse of each philosophy as well as their practical implications should be articulated in teacher education programs to fulfill the everlasting growth of an individual as an utmost purpose of education

    Top-Up Students Second Language Talk Time through Vlogs

    In this technological era, students need a change in everything especially in learning a subject which is considered to be a difficult one for second language learners (SLL). The advent of internet at all levels of learning in the educational arena is a boon to English teachers to improve the communicative skills of students. This paper shows how Vlog (a fusion of video and blog) to be used in an English teaching classroom to improve students’ oral communication. Vlog helps students to practice English even outside the classroom, give instant teacher’s feedback about their performance and can watch fellow students’ performance.     Enhancing Students' Reaction Writing via Short Stories: A Pedagogical Perspective

    Studies have shown that literary texts such as short stories have been able to develop students’ interpretative skills as well as provide opportunities for students to enhance their critical thinking skills. This study aimed at investigating the use of short stories on enhancing students’ reaction writing. The purpose of the study was to look into a new method that can assist students in expressing their views and opinions about current issues. Thus, a study was conducted to investigate whether the use of short stories as an authentic material can assist students in enhancing their reaction writing. An experimental study was employed on a group of technical students. A pre-test was administered followed by treatment sessions and finally a post-test before a semi-structured interview was conducted on lecturers. The study gathered data on the lecturers’ perceptions towards the idea of incorporating literary texts in their English language lessons. The findings showed that the use of the short story had assisted students to generate ideas to write their reaction paper although a lot of guidance had to be given by the lecturer. The students as well as the lecturers were optimistic on the idea of incorporating literature in the English language course. However, the choice of literary texts needs to be carefully selected and also students’ interests and needs are taken into consideration in order for them to write their reaction paper

    Learning English ideally consists of four skills. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All of them are interrelated from one another. Someone who masters four skills of English will be able to communicate in oral or written easily. In fact, speaking English is not easy. Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, and processing information. In this study, the researcher was interested in describing the problems in speaking faced by fourth semester students of English Department at Mulawarman University. Descriptive qualitative research was used as design of this study. The sample of this research consists of 24 students in the fourth semester. The data were obtained through the speaking test and questionnaire. Based on the speaking test and questionnaire, the students faced some problems related to pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary. The questionnaire also showed additional findings where students faced other problems, namely not having self-confidence, shyness to speak, being afraid of making mistakes, feeling nervous, and having nothing to say. Next, there are some factors resulting problems of speaking to the students, firstly less of reading habit, uneven participation and English practice both inside and outside the classroom, and confusion on applying grammar rules

    A Quantitative Examination of Factors that Influence Technology Integration in Higher Education System

    The purpose of this paper is to explore and describe the status of technology integration in Moroccan higher education system. Forty-six university English language teachers were selected from two universities: Moulay Ismail University Faculty of Arts and Humanities â€" Meknes and Sidi Mohamed Ben AbdellahDahr â€" El Mahraz â€" Fes . The quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that teachers consider Information and Communication Technology very essential in their teaching. The results also showed that computer technology is integrated in Moroccan universities at low levels. This lack of use of the new technologies in instruction and learning was attributed to several barriers including insufficient professional development, inadequate access to computer technologies, and lack of computer training to name only few

    A Comparative Study of Vocabulary Learning Strategies Employed by Iranian Undergraduate and Postgraduate EFL Learners with a Focus on Motivation

    Vocabulary is viewed as a major part of language proficiency as it allows learners to use four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The present study was carried out to compare Iranian undergraduate and postgraduate EFL learners’ use of vocabulary learning strategies. After that the study tried to see if there was any difference between highly-motivated and low-motivated learners with regard to vocabulary use. Finally, it aimed at investigating the differences between the Iranian EFL male and female learners’ use of vocabulary learning strategies. A group of 150 Iranian undergraduate and postgraduate EFL learners (75 males and 75 females) both at BA and MA levels from Zahedan universities were selected randomly. The participants’ ages ranged between18 to 42. The data were obtained through two questionnaires: Taxonomy of Vocabulary Learning Strategies developed by Schmitt (1997) and Gardner’s (1985) Attitude/ Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The findings of the study showed that there was a significant difference between undergraduate and postgraduate EFL learners’ use of vocabulary learning strategies. Also, there was a difference between highly-motivated learners and low-motivated learners’ use of vocabulary learning strategies. Moreover, the results showed that the interaction between the learners’ gender and motivation was significant.
