An Analysis of Translation Strategies of Honorific Term in the Film “The Boss Babyâ€
Translation helps the people to communicate and to transfer the information given by others. In translation language and meaning is the key of those communication and information. The culture of each language is different from another. Honorific is one of the cultures in language. The aims of the study is to examine the translation strategy of honorific term in the film The Boss Baby in its English to Indonesian translation and the use of the honorific. In this research, the researchers mainly used the qualitative research design in the strategy of descriptive. The subject of his research is honorific. Meanwhile, the data or object is the translation of subtitle of the film The Boss Baby. The method and technique in collecting data is observation specifically in noting technique and the technique for analyzing data is identity method. Research instrument is human instrument. Based on the findings, there are six types of translation strategies used. Those six types are literal translation, naturalization, generalization, reduction, transposition, and linguistic compression. The most used translation strategy is literal translation and the least one is transposition
Item Analysis of English Final Semester Test
Numerous studies have been conducted on the item test analysis in English test. However, investigation on the characteristics of a good test of English final semester test is still rare in several districts in East Java. This research sought to examine the quality of the English final semester test in the academic year of 2018/2019 in Ponorogo. A total of 151 samples in the form of students’ answers to the test were analysed based on item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractors’ effectiveness using Quest program. This descriptive quantitative research revealed that the test does not have good proportion among easy, medium, and difficult item. In the item discrimination, the test had 39 excellent items (97.5%) which meant that the test could discriminate among high and low achievers. Besides, the distractors could distract students since there were 32 items (80%) that had effective distractors. The findings of this research provided insights that item analysis became important process in constructing test. It related to find the quality of the test that directly affects the accuracy of students’ score
The Impact of Animated Karaoke on Vocabulary Acquisition Among Japanese Language Learners in Malaysian Universities
This research paper aimed to explore and investigate whether the use of animated karaoke in the Japanese language classes has an influence on vocabulary acquisition among Malaysian Japanese language learners. The study was conducted on 100 students learning the Japanese language at the beginner level as an elective subject at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The analytical descriptive result showed that the participants were able to memorize and understand Japanese vocabulary quickly and easily after watching animation consisting of visual graphics combined with text which stimulate their brain. Data from the interviews also showed that the target vocabulary items were pronounced accurately and correctly when learners sang along while watching the animated karaoke. The triangulation of data showed that animated karaoke is a good tool to engage participants in learning the Japanese language while at the same time, having fun and feeling highly motivated to explore the language. The implication of the study suggests that the use of animated karaoke in other foreign language classes will help boost students’ confidence and motivation level
Interactional Strategies and Anaphoric Repairs of BS Information and Communications (BSIT) Technology Students
This study aimed to analyze the interactional strategies and anaphoric repairs used in the recorded pair conversations of the Bachelor of Science in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students who were taking the course ICT 135 (Interactive English). The present research analyzed the ten recorded pair conversations. The results revealed the questions, minimal responses, and making statements predominated among the interactional strategies while the anaphoric repairs included other-initiated self-repair and self-initiated other-repair. This study provides implications to classroom interaction and use of language in interacting with other students. Future researchers can let their participants use their Mother Tongue or the Cebuano language as the language to be used in their research, regardless of the subject taken up by the participants. In using the Mother Tongue, the participants would be more comfortable in speaking providing a more natural and unrestricted flow of conversation

By having Twitter for their interaction, users are demanded to express their idea in short-clear-easy to understand tweets. This condition pushes them to formulate every single word to conceptualize their idea as what happens to #success. They must build a tangible explanation of the idea of ‘success’ that is frequently determined by their life experience. This research is aiming to investigate how the users from the entire world associate their thinking about ‘success’. This research used the descriptive qualitative method by having tweets as the main data gained from Twitter during 2018. The data were analysed by using domain analysis attached to Conceptual Metaphor in Cognitive Semantics approach. Development of Picture Book Media for Expressive Language Skills of Children With Autism
The expressive language skills of children with autism can be improved through teaching and learning. One of the factors supporting the success of teaching and learning process in improving the expressive language skills of children with autism is the selection of media which is in accordance with the characteristic of children with autism as target of learning. Children with autism are known to conceive information based on visual as their characteristic, so visual-based media will be more effectively in the learning process. This study uses the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) development model that aims to develop visual-based media that can accommodate the expressive language skills of children with autism. The media developed is in form book-shaped media that contains a combination of writing and image illustration. This study produces a decent picture book media based on material conformity with curriculum, grammar used, media display, and communication theory used
Flouting Maxims as a Sense of Humor in Indonesian Speech Acts
The major objective of this research is to analyze the flouting maxims in one of the Indonesian comedy movies, The Guys. This research is focused on identifying the types of flouting maxims and to seek out the reasons behind those flouting performed by Alfi character in the movie. The data for this qualitative research were collected from the utterances produced by character Alfi containing flouting maxims. They were obtained by watching the movie and transcribing the movie script to ensure that no data were accidentally left out. The data was analyzed by classifying the data into types and reasons of flouting maxims, then the researcher verified all the data to ensure that all the data matched and correctly-translated. The results of this research show that character Alfi performed all types of flouting maxims, i.e. quantity, quality, relevance and manner. Flouting maxim of manner is in the highest occurrence and flouting maxim of relevance is in the lowest occurrence. Whereas the reasons that lead character Alfi to flout the maxims are competitive, convivial, collaborative and conflictive. Concerning the reasons of flouting maxims, collaborative reason is in the highest position, and conflictive reason has the lowest position in its occurrence
The Challenges of Language Learning of the Study-Abroad Students of English Language Department of Islamic Higher Education in Kalimantan
The purpose of this study is to uncover: 1) How foreign students believe in learning English at Islamic higher education in Kalimantan, 2) The experience of foreign students in learning English at Islamic higher education in Kalimantan, 3) The challenges of foreign students in learning English at Islamic higher education in Kalimantan. This qualitative phenomenological research was to disclose the phenomenon of the entry of foreign students to Kalimantan. The main participants of the study were foreign students and English lecturers of state Islamic institute of Samarinda, state Islamic institute of Palangkaraya, and state Islamic university of Antasari. Meanwhile, the secondary participants of the study were foreign students and English lecturers from the state Islamic institute of Pontianak. The instruments were interviews, documentation, and observation. Analysis of research data used a model from Miles and Huberman consisting of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. There are three important findings of this study. Firstly, foreign students believe in learning English at Islamic higher education in Kalimantan. They declared that the curriculum is appropriate, carried out by a good process, facilitated by adequate learning facilities, and implemented by competent teachers with varied learning methods. They were also assured to get the extra benefit of not only learning English but also learning Islamic material. Secondly, regarding to the experience of foreign students, there are two main things as our conclusion, namely: language learning benefit and socio-cultural benefit. In the context of learning English, they learned English material and felt more confident in speaking English. Meanwhile, from the socio-cultural aspect, foreign students at Islamic higher education in Kalimantan enhance their life experiences by learning the social life of the Indonesian people which enrich their life experiences. Thirdly, the challenges they faced were independent living, increasing self-confidence, mastering learning material, improving English speaking skills, and adapting to the environment, such as: food, language, or culture
Speech Acts in the Selected and Award Winning Filipino Children Short Stories
Children’s literature may be one of the most difficult genres to write, if not the most difficult. The writer has to take into consideration his or her aims in writing the story while focusing on other literary elements such as the theme and the plot at the same time. Not only that, he or she has to put in mind what kind of reaction he wants from his or her reader â€" whether it be amusement, rejection or wholesome acceptance through learning. The purpose of this study is to identify the different speech acts commonly found in contemporary children’s short stories particularly those which have been awarded as Palanca winners and those from the book entitled Filipino Stories for Filipino children (An Anthology from the UP Integrated School Creative Writing Classes) by Eleanor Eme Hermosa. The study is anchored on John Searle’s (1969) Speech Act Theory. In the analysis, it is found that children’s literature provides a didactic role. Consistent with this function, the speech act structure has observed didactic role found to be primarily informational, assertive, and expressive in nature. In the stories, some of the values that the writers aimed to teach the readers are nationalism, love and pride for parents and siblings, and appreciation for education
Teacher’s Reinforcements Affecting Students’ Willingness to Communicate (WTC): A Photovoice in EFL Classroom
In teaching English, a teacher should stimulate students’ activeness to engage in a class. One way to do it is by giving reinforcement. A good reinforcement has a significant role in the students’ speaking activeness. It can be a source of students’ motivation to learn and in this case, their activeness to speak in class. This research aims to discover what reinforcement that triggers students’ willingness to communicate. The result is intended to discover the effects of teacher’s reinforcement towards students’ willingness to communicate. The data for this research is collected by the photovoice method in which more practical is needed by collaborating with SHOWeD in analyzing the data. The participants of this research are 28 college students, consisting 7 male students and 21 female students ranging from 19 to 21 years old in English Education Department who are currently attending college. Based on the data analysis, the finding of the research is teacher reinforcement in EFL classroom affect students’ willingness to communicate, particularly self-confidence, interpersonal motivation, and intergroup motivation. The research implied to help teachers to understand more about the way teacher’s reinforcement affect the students’ speaking activeness seen from the students’ perspective.Â
