Synthesizing Effective Strategies for IT-Mediated Writing: A Meta-Ethnographic Study
This meta-ethnographic study aims to synthesize effective strategies for IT-mediated writing learning by examining the existing literature on the topic. The study adopts a systematic search and selection process, which results in the inclusion of 20 studies that met the pre-determined inclusion criteria. The findings reveal six overarching themes that represent effective strategies for IT-mediated writing learning, which include (1) collaborative learning, (2) scaffolding, (3) feedback, (4) learner autonomy, (5) multimodal approaches, and (6) contextualization. These themes offer insights into how IT can be used effectively to enhance writing learning in educational settings, particularly in the context of EFL learning. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for both research and practice, and highlighting the need for further research in this area. 
The Ideological Embodiment on Nadiem Makarim’s Speech: A Critical Discourse Analysis
This study purposes to uncover the symbolic ideology and the structures of the speech discourse delivered by the current new-inaugurated educational and cultural minister; Nadiem Makarim on National Teacher’s Day. The descriptive qualitative method was employed to shed a light on the interpretation and finding of the study whilst the model of van Dijk in CDA was used to identify and answer the problems. The data were totally elicited from the speech text whilst it was as well used as subject of the study. The documentation method was applied and the data were afterwards expounded descriptively. The finding denotes that of the speech discourse’s structures including macro, micro, and supra, the speech is perceived to have certain language style usage by underlying topic of speech on conveying the mission of providing a change towards Indonesia’s Better Education. In addition, the ideology is as well indicated in ways behind the structures organized. The macro structure puts the ideology beneath the theme and the topic which are in the forms of ideology purposed as system of beliefs and system of actions. In essence, the tendency of the ideology lies on the aspect of speech theme in which it was utilized to invite (deliberately aimed) the educators and all parts getting involved in education realm and to believe and to act as what was expected
Teachers’ Beliefs in Integrating Digital Literacy in EFL Classroom: Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior Perspectives
The need for integrating digital technology into learning instructions has been acknowledge as a most prominent aspect in 21st Century learning. With emerging technology rising in prevalence, a digital consciousness to select and manage digital resources safely, appropriately, and efficiently for digital learning instruction is crucial. This present study is intended to explore teachers’ beliefs in the integration of digital literacy in EFL classroom using Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB) perspectives. The study was a qualitative study by means of case study research design to obtain a reliable understanding of the phenomenon. The data were collected using semi-structured interview, open-ended survey, and documentation. The data were retrieved from the purposively chosen informants based on the familiarity with digital technology. The results indicate relatively high levels of integration and consistent beliefs about the advantages, support from the environment, and the technology availability to integrate digital literacy into teaching learning activities. Recommendations are suggested to advance schools equipment to mediate the better support in constructing technology-enhanced classroom for teachers
A Corpus-Based Analysis of Future Tense Markers in Indonesian EFL Textbooks for Senior High School
A well-designed textbook can enhance the teaching and learning of a foreign language and it should also consider the authenticity aspect of the target language. This paper aims at studying the use of future tense markers (i.e. will, be going to) in three EFL textbooks for senior high school in Indonesia and comparing to one of the biggest English corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English, to investigate the authenticity of the textbooks. This study employs corpus-based analysis as it focuses on the frequency and collocates of future tense markers. This study, however, delimits the scope in conversations of the textbooks and the spoken sub-corpus. It shows that, although ‘will’ and ‘be going to’ are used in the textbooks and the corpus, there are some distinctions observed, be they the frequency of use or the collocates preceding the future tense markers. As for the semantic of the verb collocates, there seem to have many differences. These differences then need to be revisited and re-evaluated to improve Indonesian EFL textbooks materials to equip the English learners in a foreign language context with actual language use
Professional Development of English Teachers at a State Islamic Senior High School in Palembang
The objectives of this study were to investigate teachers’ professional development, the obstacles faced by the teachers, teachers’ efforts to resolve the obstacles, and school support for the teachers in continuing professional development. To reveal the phenomenon, qualitative case study design was used. This study combined observation, questionnaires, and interviews in data collection. English teachers, vice-principal of the curriculum, teachers who taught other subjects, and students who had been taught by the English teachers were the participants of this study. Findings revealed that English teachers’ professional development was good. The results also revealed that teachers’ scientific publications were in the poor category. Innovative works for both English teachers were in the average category. Lack of time and information were the obstacles faced by the English teachers in continuing professional development. Teachers attempted to resolve the obstacles by looking for information needed through the internet. They also had discussions with other teachers to gain information for their knowledge. The school frequently conducted some programs related to teachers’ professional development and allowed them to attend professional development activities held by other institutions
EFL Learners’ Big Five Personalities, Language Learning Strategies, and Speaking Skills
Accommodating learners’ individual differences including personalities and language learning strategies is important in implementing the learner-centred instruction. This current research investigated the correlation of EFL learners’ Big Five personalities, language learning strategies, and speaking skills. It tried to answer the questions if there is (a) any correlation between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills, (b) any correlation between the EFL learners’ learning strategies and speaking skills, and (c) any correlation between the predictor variables (EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and language learning strategies) and the criterion variable (speaking skills). This present study involved 357 students from 3 senior high schools in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, academic year 2018/2019. The data were obtained through questionnaires and speaking test. The data were analysed using statistical analysis through correlational and regression tests to answer the research questions. The results revealed that there was no significant correlation found between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.464>alpha level 0.05), between the learners’ language learning strategies and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.575>alpha level 0.05), and between the predictor variables and criterion variables (Sig. (2tailed)=0.712>alpha level 0.05). These results showed that other variables outside personality and language learning strategy might correlate to the learners’ speaking skill
Phonology and Online Media Used in Enhancing Listening Skill
This study examines how phonology and online media used to enhance students’ listening skill. The data were collected for 5 months starting from April to August 2020 in Islamic State Institute of Tulungagung (IAIN Tulungagung). The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. It involves college students who study and major English and have the relevant information about the research theme. It consist of 196 students of 3rd semester in IAIN Tulungagung. The finding reveals that there are some perspectives of students about the use of phonology and online media to enhance listening skill such as: the importance of online learning English media, online learning English media towards students’ attitudes in learning, the effect of online learning English media towards inferential listening, and media enhancing inferential listening skill. It was also gained students’ responses towards phonology used to enhance listening skill
Cohesion and Coherence of Discourse in the Story of "Layangan Putus" on Social Media Facebook
This research is to find out how the use of cohesion and coherence in the story of "Layangan Putus", which was viral some time ago. Cohesion and coherence are important criteria and principles in a text. This research is expected to contribute to the development of the quality of story writing. So the story can be understood and useful for the readers. Thus, the purpose of writing stories can inspire readers. The method used to analyze cohesion and coherence was a descriptive analysis seen in each paragraph. The cohesion aspects analyzed were lexical and grammatical cohesion aspects. The results of this study indicated that the story of "Layangan Putus" had aspects of lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and coherence. Aspects of cohesion and constructive coherence in which discourse can convey a message to readers. In this way, the contents of the story can make the reader into feeling what the writer feel
Code Mixing in College Students’ Presentation: A Case in an Intercultural Communication Class
Studying the second language (L2) was happens around the world because of some reasons such as education. Studying another language can be important in intellectual human activities after studying first language (L1). However using L2 is quite hard because some of them use L2 just for some their activities, not for the whole of their activities, such as students who use English only when studying English subject only or on the contrary. Nowadays, some people use two language at the same time, which is called code mixing. The use of two codes for communication can help them to make clear their explanation from another language that they used. The purpose of this research is concerning on the use of code mixing in college students’ presentation in Intercultural Communication class. Apart from that, there is an attempt to find out the language dominate in their presentation, the reasons of code mixing use in their presentation and the response of the audience about code mixing in presentation. The Method use is qualitative by using class presentation as the instrument, the writer collected the data of the college students’ presentation, questionnaire to the audience and interview to the presenters. The research findings showed that the languages dominate in the presentation are English language and Bahasa Indonesia equally. The reasons’ student in use code mixing is to make the explanation clear, and the response of the audience is 56.83% of the students give positive response in using code mixing of the presenter
Exploring the Students’ Response of Flipped Learning through Social Networking Sites (SNSs)
Flipped learning has developed a particular approach that facilitates the students to acquire new knowledge outside the classroom. In this digital era, it grows as technology does. MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) has a vital role in supporting English language teaching implementation. It has several applications, which can be a tool to teach English. One of the applications is using Social Networking Sites (SNSs), which the students have a high interest in using it in daily life. The research is a case study that aims to investigate the students' perception of flipped learning through Social Networking Sites (SNSs) to develop their writing ability. The participants of the research are 30 English department students in the second semester. There are ten men and 20 women in the class. The data collection was from an interview and a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire. This research indicates that the students have more ideas to write, and they can collaborate with their friends in writing through Social Networking Sites (SNSs). The result shows that the flipped classroom's implementation through SNSs is an alternative way for teachers to facilitate the learning of EFL writing in this digital era
