    Assessing the Knowledge of Extension Agents in Facilitating Climate Adaptation Strategies among Farmers in Ekiti State, Nigeria

    This study aims to assess the knowledge of extension agents in relation to climate adaptation strategies in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The sampling technique used in this survey is census sampling, with 63 extension agents as respondents. The data collected were subjected to descriptive such as frequency counts, means, and percentages, and logistic regression analysis as inferential statistical tools. Findings revealed that out of the 14 items in the awareness of climate adaptation strategies, weather forecasting 42.9% had low awareness, and climate information services (13.3%) had a low level of awareness. Further findings on respondents’ levels of knowledge in climate resilient practices for sustainable agriculture revealed that construction of water channels (x̅=2.05), growing perennial crops (x̅=1.94), use of weather forecast (x̅=1.84), and forage conservation (x̅=1.81) are below the grand mean of 2.91. The major constraints of the extension agents were limited resources and funding (x̅ =2.33), inadequate training and capacity building (x̅ =2.06), limited access to climate information (x̅ =1.86) and climate variability and uncertainty (x̅ =1.83). Further findings revealed that level of education (p = 0.49) and years of experience (p = 0.038) show a positive association, while receiving training on climate services (p = 0.984) shows a negative association with the level of knowledge of extension agents on climate adaptation strategies. In conclusion, the extension agents in Ekiti State have a substantial awareness of climate adaptation strategies but face significant constraints that hinder their effectiveness. <br/>There is a need for the extension agents to collaborate with reliable channels, such as meteorological agencies, to access accurate and timely climate information and to make use of digital platforms to disseminate climate data effectively for farmer

    The Community Citizen Scientist in First Nation Communities Subtitle: The Garden Stewards in First Nations in Northern Ontario, Case Study

    This case study explores the Braiding Food Systems project, which researches and builds capacity with First Nations in Northern Ontario. By combining Indigenous knowledge with scientific insights, the project supports community-driven food system activities, enhancing local ownership and resilience in food production. It evaluates the Participatory Citizen Science Approach, involving Garden Stewards in three First Nations to promote sustainable food production, strengthen community capacity, and support food sovereignty. Over five months in 2024, five Garden Stewards participated in activities, monitored gardens, and collected plant growth data. The methodology followed Indigenous Food Systems principles, using a Soft Systems Thinking approach within a One Health framework, connecting human, animal, environmental, and socio-cultural health. The project employed a three-phase learning framework: (1) Learning for Action (capacity development), (2) Learning in Action (data collection), and (3) Learning from Action (reflection and refinement). It identified opportunities and challenges in promoting sustainable food production in northern climates, yielding key outcomes such as improved plant resilience and pest management strategies. Integrating Indigenous knowledge with scientific insights proved essential for food security and sovereignty. Community engagement was vital for local ownership and sustainability. Nonetheless, communication issues, data collection challenges, and technology application difficulties arose in remote areas. This study illustrates citizen science\u27s potential to enhance understanding and empower communities while highlighting the importance of merging Indigenous knowledge with scientific methods to boost adaptive capacity and promote food sovereignty. Findings stress the need for context-specific strategies to overcome communication and technology barriers for sustainable food systems in Indigenous communities across Canada

    Youth Typologies and Career Aspirations in Agricultural Value Chains: Insights from the UG-Leventis Farmers’ Training Programme in Ghana

    Youth unemployment is a serious global issue and a significant economic challenge in Ghana and other developing countries. This study examined the diversity among participants of the University of Ghana-Leventis Farmers’ Training Program (UG-LFTP), predominantly youth, and how these variations influence their career choices in agricultural value chains. A cross-sectional survey involving 231 randomly selected past participants was conducted, collecting quantitative and qualitative data for analysis. The findings revealed considerable diversity among UG-LFTP participants in terms of gender, educational background, community origin, attitudes, perceptions towards agriculture, and preference for urban or rural living. Participants were grouped into three typologies based on their attitudes toward agriculture: ‘Rationalists,’ who hold a mixed or pragmatic outlook; ‘Hopefuls,’ with a completely positive perspective; and ‘Cynics,’ who maintain a completely negative view. The results further showed that 79% of the trained participants were engaged in various economic activities, with 67% involved in agriculture. Among those in agriculture, 58% were engaged in production activities, while the remaining 42% participated in other value chain functions. The study concluded that the diversity among participants reflects varied career interests and aspirations, emphasizing the potential for youth to pursue diverse careers in agriculture when exposed to different aspects of the value chains. This diversity enhances interest in non-farming agricultural activities, contributing to youth retention in the agricultural sector. It was recommended that the UG-LFTP and policymakers consider this diversity and the complexities of youth career development in agriculture. Tailored and sustainable training programs aligned with the varied interests and aspirations of young participants can better support their career trajectories within agricultural value chains
