Aboriginal Business Leaders’ Perceptions of Bioenergy Innovation
This research examines the views of Aboriginal business leaders from forestry and energy firms regarding biomass energy innovation and analyzes how current perceptions influence framing of biomass industry and policy opportunities. The application of frame analysis enables new understanding of perceptions of the biomass energy sector, including preferences and expectations surrounding biomass energy innovation and growth. Accordingly, this research analyzes Aboriginal business leaders’ beliefs and attitudes used to identify perceived problems and solutions for developing biomass energy. Our approach enables points of agreement and disagreement among leaders to be compared. Twenty-three interviews with specialized informants were undertaken with forestry and energy representatives identified through the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business natural resource industries directory. Comparisons among sectors and firms offer new understanding whether and how biomass energy is perceived by different groups, and what ameliorative measures might hold the most promise with respect to improving current understanding of biomass energy potential. Main outcomes include the advancement of knowledge concerning the nature of similarities and differences in beliefs and attitudes about biomass energy, and the production of strategies to promote renewable biomass energy awareness and opportunities
Friends In Low (Carbon) Places: Supporting Clean Economies for Rural and Indigenous Canadians
The role of rural and Indigenous (R&I) communities in the low-carbon energy future is important to all of Canada. There are substantial risks and opportunities in Canada’s low-carbon energy transition. Both experts and young R&I Canadians hope for a positive low carbon future for their communities. But they worry their vision will not be realized on our current path. Our research and consultation with experts and young R&I leaders revealed several strategic priorities and policy recommendations that support a just transition to a prosperous low-carbon future for R&I communities
Incubating Youth-led Agribusiness in Africa
The employment crisis among young Africans is severe. The lack of formal employment opportunities is expected to be made up by the youth themselves through creation of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and many stakeholder strategies are based on this expectation. Despite the high rates of MSME creation, failure rates are also high. To improve survival/success rates, different interventions have been employed including provision of business support services including Business Incubation (BI) services which support entrepreneurial skills such as recognition and exploitation of business opportunities and business development through training, mentoring access to capital, work space and other services. Most of the research on BI is centred on the experience of Europe and USA so the impact in Africa of individual services or combinations of services on success rates is not well understood
Connecting Knowledge to People: Plain Language Summaries from the North Atlantic Forum
The 2024 North Atlantic Forum was a collegial assembly to further the discussion surrounding public policy, regional development, place-based development and expanding the importance of identity and cultural development. Researchers, students, community development practitioners, and government representatives from across the North Atlantic region gathered to present findings, participate in panels and field trips. To amplify knowledge mobilization presented at the conference a series of plain language summaries were created to advance the discussion in various topics surrounding rural development and rural businesses. This initiative created a series of plain language research summaries on innovative approaches in building and maintaining sustainable rural livelihoods in a post-pandemic environment. This initiative mobilizes knowledge shared at the 2024 North Atlantic Forum to rural stakeholders in Ontario, ensuring this critical information reaches rural communities and businesses. The series of research summaries focus on topics of solar energy, food security, heritage tourism, housing, entrepreneurialism, and economic development. The purpose of the summaries is to amplify knowledge sharing, particularly among individuals/organizations that may not have been able to attend the conference. This initiative disseminated new knowledge outputs to key rural Ontario stakeholders, such as local governments, economic development actors, nonprofit organizations, and businesses. The research summaries generate an alternative tool in facilitating an accessible transfer of key messages in research while providing a pathway to practice and participation for rural community members at-large

Reflecting On The Past to Envision The Future: Visions for food security and food sovereignty in Northern Ontario First Nations
In 2024, Northern Ontario First Nations community members came together to share memories of past and present food systems, and to envision the future of food systems. Discussions from participatory focus groups and “wisdom dialogues” emphasized desires to be self-sustaining, to bring back traditions, and to (re)learn to use what already exists from the land. In this presentation, we will outline our approach to community-led research dialogues that foster processes of communication, knowledge exchange, and problem-solving in a non-hierarchical space that supports engagement, mutual respect, community research ownership and collaboration. We will highlight how we (research team, community partners) co-developed and implemented locally adapted methods and tools to understand and reflect on community memories of food systems and climate change - and how we moved towards co-analyzing the current food system challenges, and envisioning futures through an iterative, action-learning process. We will share some of the high level findings and outputs from research, and outline avenues for further research and action.

La science ouverte à l’Université de Toronto: une exploration des perspectives des chercheurs, des administrateurs et des bibliothécaires
Objective: The impetus for this project is to begin to understand open science practices and obstacles at the University of Toronto. This project uses open-ended questions to understand the ways in which university-affiliated individuals learn about, think about, and interact with open science. The goal of this study is to showcase the complexity and diversity of activity and challenges in this domain to help determine how best to move open science forward.
Methods: From March to October 2022, 45 semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculty, graduate students, librarians and administrative staff. Interviews were conducted and recorded using Zoom and the audio was transcribed using otter.ai. As part of a commitment to open science practices, a data management plan was created and with participant consent, 26 transcripts were uploaded to Dataverse. Data analysis used structured coding and thematic development to investigate responses.
Results: The core finding of this study is that there is no singular status of open science at the University of Toronto. The qualitative findings reflect a diversity of opinions, practices and relationships to open science.
Conclusion: For open science practices and scholarship to have longevity, there must be systemic changes to adopt more open activities. The University of Toronto is well positioned to guide the transition and harness open principles to move into the future.Objectif : Ce projet a pour but de commencer à comprendre les pratiques de la science ouverte et les obstacles qui peuvent exister à l’Université de Toronto. Ce projet utilise des questions ouvertes pour comprendre les façons dont les personnes affiliées à l’université s\u27informent sur la science ouverte, y réfléchissent et interagissent avec elle. L’objectif de cette étude est de mettre en évidence la complexité et la diversité des activités et des défis dans ce domaine afin d\u27aider à déterminer la meilleure façon de faire avancer la science ouverte.
Méthodes : De mars à octobre 2022, 45 entrevues semi-dirigées ont été menées avec des membres du corps professoral, des étudiants diplômés, des bibliothécaires et des membres du personnel administratif déjà engagés d’une façon quelconque dans la science ouverte. Les entrevues ont été menées sur et enregistrées avec Zoom. Le fichier audio a été transcrit grâce à Otter.ai. Dans le cadre d’un engagement favorisant les pratiques de la science ouverte, un plan de gestion des données a été créé et, avec le consentement des participants, 26 transcriptions ont été téléchargées sur Dataverse. L’analyse des données s’est appuyée sur un codage structuré et un développement thématique pour étudier les réponses.
Résultats: La principale conclusion de cette étude est qu’il n’existe pas de statut unique pour la science ouverte à l’Université de Toronto. Les données qualitatives reflètent une diversité d’opinions, de pratiques et de relations à la science ouverte. Les résultats sont limités aux individus ayant des connaissances et de l’expérience en science ouverte et ne sont pas représentatifs de l’ensemble du paysage de la recherche à l’université.
Conclusion: Pour assurer la longévité de l’érudition en science ouverte, des changements systémiques pour adopter des pratiques plus ouvertes sont nécessaires. L’Université de Toronto est bien placée pour guider la transition et pour exploiter les principes ouverts pour aller de l’avant
