The Role of Privacy Within the Realm of Healthcare Wearables\u27 Acceptance and Use
The flexibility and vitality of the Internet along with technological innovation have fueled an industry focused on the design of portable devices capable of supporting personal activities and wellbeing. These compute devices, known as wearables, are unique from other computers in that they are portable, specific in function, and worn or carried by the user. While there are definite benefits attributable to wearables, there are also notable risks, especially in the realm of security where personal information and/or activities are often accessible to third parties. In addition, protecting one’s private information is regularly an afterthought and thus lacking in maturity. These concerns are amplified in the realm of healthcare wearable devices. Users must weigh the benefits with the risks. This is known as the privacy calculus. Often, users will opt for the wearable device despite the heightened concern that their information may or will be disclosed. This is known as the privacy paradox. While past research focused on specific wearable technologies, such as activity trackers and smartphones, the paradox of disclosure despite concern for privacy has not been the primary focus, particularly in the realm of the manifestation of the paradox when it comes to the acceptance and use of healthcare wearable devices. Accordingly, the objective of the present research was to propose and evaluate a research model specifically oriented towards the role of privacy in the realm of healthcare-related wearables’ acceptance and use. The presented model is composed of sixteen constructs informed from multiple theories including multiple technology acceptance theories, the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), the Health Belief Model (HBM), and multiple privacy calculus theories. Using a survey-oriented approach to collect data, relationships among privacy, health, and acceptance constructs were examined using SmartPLS with intentions to validate the posited hypotheses and determine the influence of the various independent variables on the intention to disclose and the intention to adopt healthcare-wearables. Of particular interest is the posited moderating effects of perceived health status on intention to disclose personal information. The research endeavor confirmed significant evidence of the cost/benefit decision process, aka the privacy calculus, that takes place when deciding whether or not to disclose personal information in the healthcare wearables space. Perceived privacy risk was negatively correlated to intention to disclose while hedonic motivation and performance expectancy were positively correlated to intention to disclose. Furthermore, significant evidence was discovered pertaining to the privacy paradox via the moderating role that perceived health status plays regarding the relationships between the constructs of perceived privacy risk and intention to disclose and hedonic motivation and intention to disclose. Intention to disclose was also found to have a significant positive influence on intention to adopt. Contributions include understanding and generalization in the healthcare wearables adoption knowledge space with a particular emphasis on the role of privacy, as well as practical implications for wearable manufacturers and users
FACTORS FOR SUCCESSFULLY PASSING CERTIFICATION EXAMS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
This study explored possible success factors for health information management certification exams. Based on the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) website, in 2018 and 2019, only 70 percent of first-time test takers passed the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam; 26 percent passed the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) exam in 2018; and only 10 percent passed the Certified Health Data Analyst exam in 2019. A quantitative systematic review and meta-analysis offered insight into factors related to passing certification exams. Sources included existing, relevant peer-reviewed and published literature since 1990 within 87 educational and health/medicine databases and 62 other articles and journal databases available at the University of South Dakota library. Outcomes from the systematic review include illumination of factors for passing health information management, healthcare, and education certification exams. Ultimately, this new information will help improve pass rates on certification exams
Towards Automated Policy Generation for Dynamic Access Control in the Internet of Things Control in the Internet of Thing
Access control is one of the frontline security measures that any information system should adopt. The dynamic nature of the Internet of Things and autonomous vehicles requires access control policies should be able to adapt to their environments. However, it is very challenging to specify access control policies manually because of their dynamic nature. In this paper, we propose a Long-Short-Term-Memory based automated policy generation for dynamic access control in the Internet of Things. We will evaluate the performance of the proposed solution using two datasets. We expect the proposed solution will be able to generate synthetic access control policies by training from the datasets which can potentially be used for dynamic access provisioning in IoT systems
RHIA CERTIFICATION EXAM SUCCESS FACTORS
This study explored possible success factors for passing the Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA) certification exam. According to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), only 70 percent of first-time test-takers passed the RHIA exam in 2019. A literature review offered insight into factors related to passing certification exams. Sources included existing, relevant peer-reviewed and published literature since 1990 within 87 educational and health/medicine databases and 62 other articles and journal databases available at the University of South Dakota library. A correlational design was used in the study. Data was retrieved from AHIMA, cleaned, and binary logistic regression analysis was completed. A significant relationship was identified between having a prior credential, such as the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential and passing the RHIA exam. This new information will help improve pass rates, advance the HIM field research base, and help students improve their odds of passing the RHIA exam
On the efficacy of behavior change techniques in mHealth for self-management of diabetes: A meta-analysis
Background
Diabetes prevalence has become a global crisis. Due to the substantial rise in smartphone use, a variety of mobile interventions have been developed to help improve the clinical outcomes of diabetes patients. Objectives
This study seeks to examine specific behavior change theories and techniques used in the design of self-management mobile app-based interventions aimed at achieving glycemic control in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Methods
A meta-analysis of randomized control trials published in PubMed/Medline and Web of Science between January 2010 and October 2020 was conducted using studies that included diabetes patients, reported on well-described mobile app-based interventions, compared mHealth to usual care, and evaluated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at baseline and follow-up. Results
We reported on 21 studies with a total of 1,920 diabetes patients. Our findings show that mHealth apps led to statistically significant clinical outcomes as compared to standard care for glycemic control (−0.38, 95% CI = −0.50 to −0.25, p \u3c 0.0001) indicating that such interventions result in a reduction in HbA1c. Interventions that used behavior theory for developing mHealth apps were not statistically different from those that did not (p = 0.18). However, increased use of behavior change techniques (BCTs) may result in slightly higher HbA1c reduction. Among all BCTs, the most effective ones appear to be “Action planning” and “Self-monitoring of outcome(s) of behavior. Conclusions
The current meta-analysis provides evidence that mHealth is likely to be beneficial for diabetes patients when the right behavior change techniques are applied to realize the full advantage of the intervention. Further investigation of the role of theory in the design of mHealth app-based interventions is warranted
Design of a Virtual Cybersecurity Escape Room
As cybersecurity education and training methods endeavor to build a skilled workforce to meet the growing demands of government and industry, it is important to craft training exercises to build and assess a learner’s understanding of cybersecurity topics in a fun and meaningful way. To meet this need, we designed a concept map and virtual model of a collaborative, virtual cybersecurity escape room. Escape rooms, which are a form of serious games intended to increase knowledge and skills or measure learning outcomes, are scenario-based and interactive in nature. The artifacts described align the serious gaming elements with elements associated with the learning experience to assist game designers and educators in addressing the need for a collaborative virtual space where learners can practice skills associated with cybersecurity in a gamified manner
Identity Sharing and Adaptive Personalization Influencing Online Repurchases
Adaptive personalization systems are becoming common in online retail. These systems use dynamically generated data and advanced data analytic techniques to infer customer preferences and recommend products or services best suited to a customer’s tastes. However, the adaptive personalization system’s ability to continue delivering valuable personalized content relies heavily on return customers’ willingness to continue sharing their identity information. By applying identity theory and the action-cognitive processing-decision model, cognitive and behavioral processes are theorized whereby customers who willingly share identity information favorably assess the value of product or service recommendations provided by adaptive personalization systems relative to their self-identity needs. The effects of willingness to share identity information and perceived personalization value on repurchase intention are examined. The results empirically demonstrate that a willingness to share identity information increases repurchase intention; further, this relationship is partially mediated by the perceived value of adaptive personalization
An Inventory of Privacy Curricula Offerings in Higher Education
Privacy workforce development is a growing need as organizations struggle to find qualified privacy professionals such as Data Protection Officers and privacy engineers. Little has been written about the availability of formal privacy education opportunities that could satisfy this demand. This study inventoried the current state of formal privacy education at institutions of higher education. The inventory included information on 115 privacy programs and 333 privacy courses offered at 99 institutions around the world. Analysis revealed that privacy education is dominated by legal and compliance curricula at the graduate level, with other data privacy opportunities available in smaller quantities
Design of an Intelligent Patient Decision aid Based on Individual Decision-Making Styles and Information Need Preferences
An emerging trend in healthcare delivery is that of patient-centered medicine which includes empowering patients through shared decision-making in their medical care. The use of information technology is a key enabler for empowering patients and supporting patient-centered care. The patient decision aid is one tool for getting patients more involved in their care. However, existing patient decision aids make generalized assumptions about their users and fail to accommodate the variability of individual information needs and decision-making preferences known in the literature. In this paper, we investigate patient attributes that influence patient decision-making preferences and present a framework for the design of individualized patient decision aids. The proposed framework is instantiated in the context of end stage renal disease and was tested to evaluate its effectiveness
Proliferation of health misinformation on social media platforms: a systematic literature review
This paper presents a systematic literature review to provide a conceptual framework and future research directions for the identification and detection of health misinformation on social networking sites. We have found the health misinformation problem is yet to evolve and requires more exploration towards the identification of reliable techniques. We have extracted the existing literature from five research databases. The focus of this review is to explore various concepts, techniques, and datasets adopted by the prior studies. After applying Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines we have got 27 final papers to include in this review. The findings show that despite adopting various techniques there was a lack of research done on concepts like fake news and healthcare factchecking. Furthermore, this paper also identified significant feature and technique-based research gaps for future research directions
