Security through Neutrality? An analysis of net neutrality’s present position in cybersecurity
Net neutrality emerged as one of the most hotly debated topics in technology within the last decade and, at its current rate, the contention will likely persist for the foreseeable future. The term refers to a wide set of standards and principles that collectively regulate Internet service providers’ implementation and control of communication and content on the Web. Under these regulations, ISPs are required to treat all users and traffic equally, lacking the ability to offer preferred access or restrict content based on any number of factors. Naturally, these principles have significant implications regarding the economy, consumer rights, and other facets of the Internet, and much of the discourse and research surrounding this issue continue to focus upon these aspects
Towards an Efficient Multi-Cloud Observability Framework of Containerized Microservices in Kubernetes Platform
A recent trend in software development adopts the paradigm of distributed microservices architecture (MA). Kubernetes, a container-based virtualization platform, has become a de facto environment in which to run MA applications. Organizations may choose to run microservices at several cloud providers to optimize cost and satisfy security concerns. This leads to increased complexity, due to the need to observe the performance characteristics of distributed MA systems. Following a decision guidance models (DGM) approach, this research proposes a decentralized and scalable framework to monitor containerized microservices that run on same or distributed Kubernetes clusters. The framework introduces efficient techniques to gather, distribute, and analyze the observed runtime telemetry data. It offers extensible and cloud-agnostic modules that can exchange data by using a multiplexing, reactive, and non-blocking data streaming approach. An experiment to observe samples of microservices deployed across different cloud platforms was used as a method to evaluate the efficacy and usefulness of the framework. The proposed framework suggests an innovative approach to the development and operations (DevOps) practitioners to observe services across different Kubernetes platforms. It could also serve as a reference architecture for researchers to guide further design options and analysis techniques

Recent advances in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have led to many new variants and uses of GANs. The latest advancements have allowed researchers and practitioners to apply this technique to tumor-related problems with limited data. One of the trends in this problem domain is to develop different variants of GANs suited explicitly to particular problems. The variants of GANs are numerous but share a common characteristic of expanding the dataset by creating synthetic data from the original dataset. This paper aims to develop a research agenda through a systematic literature review that investigates practitioners\u27 and researchers\u27 emerging issues and current works on the topic. Assessing Commercial Biological Control Agents for Activity Against South Dakota Alfalfa Pathogens
Alfalfa is the third most valuable crop in the United States and is commonly grown in South Dakota. It is used as a protein-rich feed for livestock, a cover crop that protects against soil erosion, and a natural fertilizer because of its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. According to the USDA 2021 Crop Production Summary, South Dakota ranks third in the US for newly seeded acres, and alfalfa seedlings are highly susceptible to disease. Oomycete pathogens are arguably the most economically important pathogens causing negative effects on alfalfa field establisthment and yield. These root rotting pathogens (Aphanomyces euteiches and Pythium spp.) can cause seed rot, reduce root development, and diminish stand establishment. Oomycete pathogens that inhabit the soil can remain present and pathogenic as oospores for many years regardless of soil conditions. Seed rot is a major issue, forcing growers to spend a substantial amount of money to replant stands. Recent research tested the management strategy of using fungicidal treatment to inhibit these pathogens. These chemical treatments were unsuccessful against many of these pathogens in field studies (Smith, 2014). In this study, alfalfa root rotting pathogen isolates from South Dakota fields and the USDA were evaluated for sensitivity to biological control treatments. A biological control is the addition of a natural microbial predator to a inhibit the growth of a pathogen or pest. This research will identify additional management strategies for South Dakota alfalfa diseases and provide growers with the information necessary to make educated decisions to increase yields and maximize their profits.https://scholar.dsu.edu/erposters/1011/thumbnail.jp
Recommender systems research and theory in higher education: A systematic literature review
Recommender systems provide the ability to personalize and adapt environments for student learning. To customize learning experiences, applications of recommender systems research in education have resulted in evidence of various recommender system approaches such as content-based filtering, collaborative filtering, and knowledge-based. This research focuses on those applications in higher education when given a non-MOOC classroom setting and examines the theoretical basis for the approaches. Learning and information systems theories are considered in this systematic review of the literature published from 2017 to early 2022. Findings indicate varying adaptive learning design recommender approaches and the potential to build the theoretical base of both learning and information systems theories
A False Sense of Security — Organizations Need a Paradigm Shift on Protecting Themselves against APTs
Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are among the most complex cyberattacks and are generally executed by cyber-attackers linked to nation-states. An organization may have security strategies to prevent APTs. However, a false sense of security may exist when the focus is on implementing security strategies but not on the effectiveness of implemented security strategies. This research aims to find out 1) if organizations are in a false sense of security while preventing APT attacks, 2) what factors influence the false sense of security, and 3) whether organizational culture influence factors contributing to the false sense of security. A theoretical model is developed to evaluate the sense of security to answer the three research questions. The initial model includes seven independent variables, one moderator variable, and one dependent variable. We designed and conducted a survey among cybersecurity professionals to test 14 hypotheses on the sense of security. We further refined and finalized the model based on the data analysis from the survey data. This research confirms that employees are not confident about organizations‟ cybersecurity posture despite all the awareness training, technological advancements, and massive investment. We also identified key factors which influence the employee perception of cybersecurity posture. Based on the research findings, we provided recommendations that can be followed to improve the effectiveness of implemented security strategies
Drivers and Challenges of Wearable Devices Use: Content Analysis of Online Users Reviews
With recent advancements in wearable device technologies, there is still a need to investigate drivers and challenges associated with the use of these devices. Following a content analysis approach, this study leverages recent “found large-scale” data to better understand the drivers and challenges that affect the adoption and use of such devices. Analyzing a total of 16,717 online reviews about wearable devices, the findings emphasized the importance of various functionalities (perceived usefulness), appeal, and a number of device design features as the most prominent drivers, while concerns about quality, credibility, and perceived value as potential challenges to wearable adoption and continued use. The findings could inform theoretical models for technology adoption and continued use and can also provide guidance to the design and development of wearable devices
