PLANTING SEEDS OF REVOLUTIONARY LOVE: INDIGENIZING EDUCATION THROUGH AN ANTI-COLONIAL FRAMEWORK FOR ETHNIC STUDIES

    No full text
This dissertation critically examines the persistent colonial influences within K-12 education, focusing on how these influences undermine the goals of Ethnic Studies as a decolonial project. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the research draws on insights from seasoned Ethnic Studies educators and keepers of ancestral knowledge to develop an anti-colonial framework aimed at promoting inclusivity, interethnic solidarity, and empowerment. The findings from Chapter Four are articulated through four emergent themes from the Pláticas sessions: Resistance & Revolutionary Love, Relationships & Restorative Approaches, Re-Membering & Reaffirming, and Reimagining & Revitalization. These themes highlight the necessity of embedding resistance against colonial structures, fostering relational and restorative educational practices, reclaiming and reaffirming marginalized histories and identities, and revitalizing curricula to include diverse epistemologies. This study highlights the urgency of integrating an anti-colonial approach into Ethnic Studies, especially in light of new California graduation mandates. This integration aims to transform educational practices to better reflect and respond to the diverse backgrounds of students, thereby challenging and reshaping the Eurocentric narratives and structures that persist in education. This work contributes to the discourse on decolonizing education and offers practical insights for policymakers, administrators, and educators aiming to implement transformative practices in the K-12 system

CONTAINER RUNTIME VULNERABILITY MITIGATION USING USER NAMESPACE ISOLATION

    Get PDF
Although containers have revolutionized application deployment by allowing for rapid and consistent deployment, their growing adoption has also raised significant security concerns. Each container is an isolated instance of an operating system that comes pre-packaged with the users desired applications. With multiple containers running on a host machine, an adversary can potentially break out of the container into the host machine. This project investigates the effectiveness of user namespace isolation as a security mechanism to mitigate container escape vulnerabilities that target the container’s runtime. The research questions are: Question 1, does user namespace isolation mitigate container runtime vulnerabilities that target file descriptor mishandling (Reeves, 2021)? Question 2, does user namespace isolation mitigate container escape in containers that are missing access controls (Reeves, 2021)? Question 3, does user namespace isolation prevent container escape from occurring against vulnerabilities that target host execution in the container context? (Reeves, 2021) The findings are that: Question 1, user namespace isolation mitigated file descriptor vulnerabilities; Question 2, user namespace isolation successfully mitigated vulnerabilities with missing access controls; Question 3, user namespace isolation mitigated vulnerabilities that targeted host execution in the container context. The conclusion is that user namespace isolation is a valuable security mechanism that can successfully mitigate each of the types of runtime vulnerabilities within containers. While this project does not prove that user namespace isolation mitigates all container escape vulnerabilities, it can still be stated that an infrastructure that implements user namespace isolation is more secure than an infrastructure that does not. Areas for further study include studying the increase in resource usage that comes from enabling user namespace isolation, testing user namespace isolation against other vulnerabilities, and testing for vulnerabilities within user namespace isolation

Defining and establishing a restaurant wine culture

Purpose Applying signaling theory to Schein’s organizational culture framework, this study aims to explain how restaurants communicate that their establishments value wine through multiple cultural attributes. Design/methodology/approach A phenomenological research design was adopted to conduct three focus groups with 14 restaurateurs about wine culture. Conversational analysis with Straussian coding was used. Findings A comprehensive definition of wine culture was provided, and five factors emerged that signal the presence of a wine culture. A wine presence includes a wine list, marketing efforts, community involvement and restaurant aesthetics. Employee traits are defined by individual attributes, communications skills and overall knowledge (training). Restaurant identity reflects the cultural alignment and customer relationship expectations set forth by ownership. Organizational structure reflects a restaurant’s hierarchy within which an individual or department is afforded the freedom to invest in wine. Future alignment reflects generational differences and trends in wine preferences and consumption. Research limitations/implications Researchers are provided a wine-culture definition and framework for wine research. Restaurants can use the study’s findings to formulate strategies for establishing a wine culture. Originality/value This study provided a framework for restaurateurs who wish to be known for wine to implement. Researchers and restaurateurs may facilitate communication between guests, staff and an organization regarding wine as a means of creating a competitive advantage

PROGRESSION OF BLACK WOMEN IN TENURE RANKED POSITIONS

    Get PDF
The intersectionality of race and gender affects the progression and experience of Black women in tenure-ranked positions in higher education. As Black women navigate the tenure process, they encounter systemic issues while fulfilling the criteria of teaching, service, and research. Black women\u27s experiences while obtaining and maintaining tenure-ranked positions in Southern California reflect the discrimination, biases, lack of respect, and value of their roles and contributions to academia. In addition, Black women are being challenged more and questioned regarding their abilities and roles by peers, students, and academic administration. Research studies in the past have demonstrated the underrepresentation of Black women in academia; however, there is a gap in the literature regarding Black women who occupy tenure-ranked positions. The purpose of this study is to bridge the gap through a qualitative exploratory approach. The proposed hypothesis and literature review aligned with the five themes identified through data collected during interviews with Black women. Recommendations for Social work, policy, and future research implications were provided

Using Behavior Skills Training and Virtual Simulations to Train Preservice Practitioners in Behavior Management: An Exploratory Comparison Study

    Get PDF
This study investigated the efficacy of two distinct virtual training platforms, TeachLivE™ and Zoom with actors, in preparing preservice practitioners for behavior management in real-world settings. This exploratory study aimed to investigate individual participant skill acquisition and assess which platform better equipped participants with the necessary skills and strategies. This study employed Behavior Skills Training as the foundational pedagogical framework, utilizing structured training and feedback to foster skill acquisition and retention. The two groups, one using TeachLivE™ and the other Zoom with actors, received identical training modules and practice scenarios. After the training, participants were assessed on their ability to apply behavior management strategies in simulated scenarios closely mirroring authentic classroom settings. Results from the study revealed an observable difference in the percent correct performance between the two groups. The TeachLivE™ group exhibited a higher level of success in applying behavior management strategies compared to the Zoom with actors group. This outcome suggests that the immersive nature of TeachLivE™, with its lifelike avatars and interactive virtual classrooms, provided a more effective training environment for preservice practitioners in behavior management

EXAMINING CONSTRUAL LEVEL PRIMING AS A POTENTIONAL INTERVENTION FOR MISINFORMATION SHARING

    Get PDF
Misinformation has become increasingly difficult to combat in the digital age. The current study tested a model exploring the relationships between self-regulation, habitual social media use, construal level, and propagation of misinformation. Drawing from previous research, I hypothesized that individuals with higher self-regulation would exhibit lower susceptibility to misinformation sharing. I also hypothesized that habitual social media use mediates the relationship between self-regulation and misinformation sharing. In addition, I introduced construal level priming as an experimental intervention, where individuals primed with abstract construal levels may demonstrate more discerning information processing, thereby reducing the likelihood of misinformation sharing. Results from data analyses indicated that self-regulation is negatively associated with misinformation sharing. However, habitual media usage did not mediate the relationship between self-regulation and misinformation sharing, and construal level priming did not moderate the relationship between self-regulation and misinformation sharing, and between habitual social media usage and misinformation sharing. Potential causes of these non-significant associations are discussed
