    EFFECTIVENESS OF A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DISTRICT’S WELLNESS CENTER EVIDENCED-BASED PRACTICES ON PUSH FACTORS IN LATINX STUDENTS

    This scoping literature review proposal explores the effectiveness of a Southern California School District’s wellness center evidenced-based practices on push factors that impact Latinx students. Push factors such as low grades, low test scores, poor behavior, absenteeism, and suspensions/expulsions expose Latinx youth to mental health issues that influence academic success. By analyzing existing research on wellness center approaches, evidenced-based practices, culturally responsive practices, and academic support, this scoping literature review proposal would aim to assess the impact these practices have on student academic success. This proposed study would have the intent of assisting this school district to create an evaluation tool of their wellness center to determine if they are effectively impacting push factors in Latinx students

    FEMALE VETERAN WITH PTSD FROM MILITARY SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS: A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

    ABSTRACT This proposed research study contributes qualitative insights aimed at addressing the lack of research on effective interventions for underserved female veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the military sexual assault population. Research data show female veterans are at higher risk for MSA than their male counterparts. The proposed study would use a qualitative descriptive structure and semi-structured interviews with female veterans and their healthcare providers. The primary goals are identifying effective interventions and comprehensively understanding these women\u27s experiences. The study will utilize theoretical frameworks related to trauma and recovery to conceptualize themes and categories. In the context of social work practice, the study underscores the significance of advocating for professional awareness to address the unique needs of this population. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the importance of specialized training for healthcare professionals and the development of effective interventions

    CULTURAL RISK FACTORS FOR TEEN PREGNANCY IN HISPANIC/LATINA WOMEN: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

    ABSTRACT Teen pregnancy remains a significant social issue in the United States, disproportionately affecting Hispanic/Latina adolescents. Research is highly needed to understand the factors contributing to high rates of teen pregnancy among Hispanics/Latinas. In 2020, Latina teen birth rates (25.3 per 1,000 females) exceeded that of White teens (11.4 per 1,000 teens) by a large margin (CDC, 2020). The purpose of this study is to explore the cultural factors, particularly religion and familial influences, on the high rates of teen pregnancy among Hispanics/Latinas. Qualitative data was collected using in-depth interviews with seven adult Hispanic/Latina women who have experienced teen pregnancy. Findings highlight Hispanic/Latina cultural influences such as religious beliefs, lack of sex education, generational teen pregnancies, and familism as risk factors for teen pregnancy. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of teen pregnancy among Hispanics/Latinas, which could guide social workers to develop culturally sensitive strategies to address this issue

    Echoes of Exiled Journalists from Africa: Motivation, Resilience, Values and Innovation of Global Journalism

    This study examines the motivations, resilience and innovative contributions of exiled journalists from sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on those from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. It categorises these journalists into voluntary exiles, who leave due to a commitment to journalistic integrity and dissatisfaction with censorship and corruption, and involuntary exiles, who flee threats, violence or imprisonment linked to their investigative work. Through in-depth interviews with 32 exiled journalists, the study explores their adaptation strategies in host countries, their persistent motivations despite significant challenges and their use of new communication technologies and online platforms to bypass censorship. The findings underscore the essential role of exiled journalists in upholding press freedom and ethical reporting, emphasising their resilience and dedication despite considerable risks and sacrifices. These insights highlight the need for robust support systems, including increased funding, legal assistance and technological resources, to empower exiled journalists and ensure their continued contributions to global journalism

    Trauma lives in the body, with or without conscious memory of the events that placed it there. To cope with the pain of trauma we might disconnect from our bodies, choosing to view ourselves as some separate entity living within the body. Disconnection offers a sense of protection by allowing compartmentalization of pain, grief, and trauma, but the harder these emotional fragments are fought, the more they demand acknowledgment. Referencing my torso for size, I handbuild biomorphic sculptures from clay, finishing them with glaze that mimics the dewy texture of raw clay, using a palette derived from my skin tone and bruises. These sculptures incorporate organic elements like cellulite, bones, organs, often surrounding a central orifice which invites exploration from every angle. Square oil-on-panel portraits painted of these sculptures in surrealistic colours provide a static, filtered view of the sculptures, controlling and restricting how the sculpture subject is perceived. Throughout the works in this exhibition, I am seeking embodiment through abstraction. Abstraction provides a layer of protection, allowing me to share these totems of trauma publicly. The juxtaposition of apparent accessibility within the sculpture and the bounded, curated nature of the paintings and textiles create an intriguing, almost magical aura – a shared secret for those who linger a bit longer and look a bit closer. Fragments of Forgiveness is a meditation on the intricate relationship between the body and traumatic experience from the artist’s perspective as a survivor of abuse and sexual assault. These lived experiences can never truly be forgotten, but the sharp, stinging pain can be transmuted into something still, and quiet – something that can be comfortably lived with

    INVESTIGATION OF POTENTIAL VPS21 EFFECTOR PROTEINS INVOLVED IN MISREGULATION OF LIPID HOMEOSTASIS AND OBESITY IN S. CEREVISIAE

    In eukaryotes, Rab GTPases (Rabs) regulate vesicular transport between membrane-bound organelles by cycling between active (GTP-bound) and inactive (GDP-bound) conformations. In GTP-bound active state, a Rab cooperates with effector proteins to regulate transport activities such as membrane tethering, docking and fusion. Vps21, yeast (S. cerevisiae) ortholog of human Rab5, primarily regulates vesicular transport at endosomes, though it can also localize to and regulate functions at other cellular membranes. The mutant vps21Q66L is a GTP-locked allele that interacts persistently with effector proteins. Using endosomal cargo sorting reporters such as CPY-invertase, we report that there is little to no defect in endosomal transport in vps21Q66L mutants. Interestingly, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) data and fluorescence microscopy revealed that cells expressing the GTP-locked allele accumulated more lipid droplets (LDs) than wild-type cells. Yeast cells build LDs when nutrients are restricted, suggesting a misregulated response to nutrients. A role for Vps21/Rab5 signaling in regulating LD dynamics represents a new mechanism in understanding lipid metabolism and obesity, though it is still unknown which Vps21 effector protein(s) would contribute to the novel “obese yeast” phenotype. We intend to identify Vps21 effector proteins that are responsible for LD accumulation through a combination of biotin proximity labeling and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. We engineered plasmids expressing a fluorophore (mCherry) and biotin ligase mutant (TurboID) fused to the amino- termini of VPS21 and vps21Q66L. We confirmed via microscopy and cargo sorting assays that Vps21 chimeras localize to expected membranes and support Vps21-dependent transport functions. We formulated minimal biotin media to support yeast growth while reducing background biotinylation of native proteins to aid detection of novel Vps21 effectors. Our TurboID method of proximity labeling biotinylates proteins within the vicinity of Vps21, enabling affinity purification via streptavidin beads of proteins that are covalently tagged with biotin. Streptavidin has a high binding affinity for biotin which allows us to recover biotinylated proteins. Conducting unbiased fishing expeditions via mass spectrometry will allow us to identify Vps21 effector proteins that may be responsible for lipid misregulation. Using chromosomal and plasmid engineering, we have constructed and confirmed via HRP-streptavidin blotting a yeast proteomic query strain expressing a bpl1-temperature sensitive mutation harboring our mCherry-TurboID-Vps21 plasmids. This query strain will allow us to decrease the endogenous biotinylation activity and identify known and novel transient Vps21 effectors related to lipid metabolism which might otherwise be masked by the native biotin ligase machinery

    INTEGRATED CROP RECOMMENDATION SYSTEM: HARNESSING MACHINE LEARNING

    To meet the increasing demand, for food while also reducing impact this study introduces an innovative Integrated Crop Recommendation System that combines advanced machine learning with sustainable farming methods. The goal of this system is to transform how crops are chosen by considering factors like soil quality, local climate and habitats for pollinators thereby enhancing the precision and effectiveness of crop suggestions. In contrast to agricultural decision support systems that often neglect the interconnectedness of soil health, weather conditions and biodiversity, this new approach aims to improve food security and sustainability. The primary research focus is on optimizing practices that support pollinators in environments. The research aims to provide farmers with enhanced guidance and deeper insights into the relationships among soil quality, weather patterns and ecological sustainability offering a solution for modern farming practices. The study encompasses a literature review, methodology development, data analysis, and discussion of findings. Outlines research directions. Research Questions are: Q1) How can incorporating pollinator-related data into machine learning models enhance the accuracy and efficiency of agricultural decision support systems for optimal crop recommendations? Q2) What kind of effect does incorporating practices to support pollinators have on the overall strength and durability of crop recommendations produced by the integrated machine learning model? The Findings and Discussions for the questions are: Q1) In our research we. Evaluated a system, for suggesting crops based on machine learning. This system considers factors such as soil quality, weather conditions and reliance on pollinators by studying data sets related to crop recommendations and pollination. Our analysis of the data showed connections like the relationship between rainfall and crop production. Additionally, our decision tree model performed better than the SVM model, in predicting crop yields. Q2) The research shows that including methods to support pollinators in crop recommendations based on machine learning can improve their performance and durability. It stresses the importance of factoring in pollination aspects when making decisions. By grouping crops based on their reliance on pollinators it underscores the need for customized conservation approaches. Proves that taking types of pollinators into account greatly enhances the precision of predicting crop yields. Conclusions for each question are: Q1) Our study shows that using machine learning to examine the connections, among soil makeup, weather conditions and reliance on pollinators improves decision making tools, for agriculture. This in turn boosts the accuracy of crop recommendations. Helps ensure food security. Q2) By including actions that support pollinators in crop suggestions generated by machine learning it boosts their dependability and strength. This underscores the importance of efforts on conserving pollinators to enhance the resilience of crops and the overall health of ecosystems. Areas of further studies for each question are: Q1) The success of crop recommendation systems powered by machine learning models relies heavily on tuning hyperparameters and structural components than just sticking to preset or manually configured settings. Q2) Incorporating a variety of factors and crop specific characteristics into crop recommendation systems provides a grasp of growth elements essential for improving the accuracy of recommendations
