The Greek Ethnography. A critical overview

    No full text
This article presents an overview of Greek ethnography. It argues that ethnography in Greece cannot be seen as separate from its preceding fields of history and folklore studies, alongside Greece itself being viewed as a research field by foreign anthropologists. Because of the late introduction of anthropology in Greece it followed very quickly the main theoretical stream of postmodernism in its view of Greek society. The main argument of this article is that the introduction of postmodernism in Greek Anthropology prevented a dialogue with the pre-existing field research work that had been conducted in Greece by non Greek Ethnographers and Greek Folklorists or Historians. This fact has specific consequences at the epistemological, theoretical and methodological level of contemporary Greek Ethnography

Avventure e disavventure dei processi di co-sviluppo

"Co-development" is the term to name those aid projects where migrants present themselves as "actors of development. Those programmes involve also local government, migrant and non-migrant associations and NGOs. After a brief glance towards the debate over transnational migration and development nexus, I focus on the different perspectives towards co-development and, relying on some examples, on the ambivalent nuances characterizing such projects. Nevertheless, I argue that these projects are an interesting subject of study, which provides a fruitful methodological solution to observe the interplay between associations and institutions in the receiving context, various transnational practices and the economic and socio-cultural changes in the context of origin

The ethnographic research with Arsi Oromo has highlighted the relation between the wedding rites and the strategies enacted to respond to the modernization imposed by the global system. We have detected a correlation between the power to control food resources, birth-rate and social peace and the inner-clan and inter-clan political and social relationships. This context has engendered a male power structure and the power of elders and clan-chiefs, who constantly negotiate between the perpetuation of cultural traditions and the need for economic innovation  by referring to a complex system named «make peace»

Don Nicola Jobbi: un salvatore culturale. Politiche e pratiche del patrimonio nella seconda metà del ‘900 in un’area dell’Italia centrale

    No full text
Arrived in August 1963 in the village of Cerqueto, located in the central Apennines, the young parish priest Don Nicola Jobbi inaugurates a capillary activity of sound, photographic, audiovisual documentation in a small community in which he is called to carry out its pastoral mission. Lasted for over twenty years, Jobbi's research takes on its own meaning within an extended civil and civilizing tension, and the ability to connect a small local, restricted and peripheral universe with non-local intellectual, political, social and economic processes

The paper introduces the session by integrating the different contributions in the common effort to analyze ethnographically the configurations of humanitarian aid and of the international cooperation and in combining the institutional analysis with the study of the ideologies, the projects, the discourses and the practices. It also invites to interpret the articles as ways to understand how the activities of the subaltern groups may offer important contributions in the elaboration of new forms of citizenship and of new rights
