Achievement Standards Network (ASN): An Application Profile for Mapping K-12 Educational Resources to Achievement Standards
This paper describes application profile development for the
National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Achievement Standards Network (ASN) in the
United States. The ASN is a national repository of machine-readable achievement
standards modeled in RDF that shape teaching and learning in the various states. We
describe the nature of the ASN metadata and the various uses to which that metadata
is applied including the alignment of the standards of one state to those of another
and the correlation of those standards to educational resources in support of
resource discovery and retrieval
SKOS for an Integrated Vocabulary Structure
In order to transfer the Chinese Classified Thesaurus (CCT)
into a machine-processable format and provide CCT-based Web services, a pilot study
has been conducted in which a variety of selected CCT classes and mapped thesaurus
entries are encoded with SKOS. OWL-lite and RDFS are also used to encode the same
contents for the purposes of feasibility and cost-benefit comparison. The poster
reports on the progress, share the sample SKOS entries, and summarize problems
identified during the SKOS encoding process. Results of OWL and RDFS encoding for
the same vocabulary structure will be used for comparison
LCSH is to Thesaurus as Doorbell is to Mammal: Visualizing Structural Problems in the Library of Congress Subject Headings
The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) has been
developed over the course of more than a century. Before 1986, only “See Also”
references were available. In that year, an attempt was made to automatically
convert these references into standardized hierarchical and associative thesaural
relations. This process was highly unreliable. Unfortunately 20 years later most
records still have not had their references evaluated, making their use in automated
processes problematic. As part of our work on converting the Headings into SKOS,
this project has experimented with different graph visualizations of the tangled web
of broader terms embedded in LCSH. This poster will demonstrate several of these
renderings, show how they can help users to judge which relationships might not be
correct, and reveal the true relationship between Doorbells and Mammals. A sample

Making a Library Catalogue Part of the Semantic Web
Library catalogues contain an enormous amount of structured,
high-quality data, however, this data is generally not made available to semantic
web applications. In this paper we describe the tools and techniques used to make
the Swedish Union Catalogue (LIBRIS) part of the Semantic Web and Linked Data. The
focus is on relations between resources and the mechanisms used to make data
available, rather than perfect description of the individual resources. We also
present a method of creating links between records of the same work
Metadata in an Ecosystem of Presentation Dissemination
Developing and managing local practices about metadata
implementation (desired quality, workflow, support tools, guidelines, and
vocabularies) and about metadata exposure (supported standards, and pre-exposure
transformations) requires an ability to understand and communicate the specific
complex settings in which the metadata, resources, and users exist. Developing such
an understanding is often informed by an implicit or explicit conceptual model. This
poster presents an ecologically influenced view of a researcher seeking to
disseminate and store their presentations
The Specification of the Language of the Field and Interoperability: Cross-language Access to Catalogues and Online Libraries (CACAO)
The European Union is linguistically diverse, with 23 official
languages and 56% of its citizens who are able to converse in a language other than
their mother tongue. However, European libraries do not share a subject heading or
classification system or a bibliographic format. Thus, cross-language access to
library collections is a complex problem involving not only parsing and translation,
but also mapping subject headings, classifications and bibliographic formats, i.e.
syntactic and semantic interoperability. The CACAO project (Cross-language Access to
Catalogues and Online Libraries) will implement the following vision. A user enters
a monolingual query, e.g. English cat, and retrieves relevant records containing,
e.g., the German word for cat, Katze, French chat, or Italian gatto. CACAO will
thereby refine and extend an implementation at the Library of the Free University of
Bozen-Bolzano, Italy
The Dryad Data Repository: A Singapore Framework Metadata Architecture in a DSpace Environment
This report presents recent metadata developments for the Dryad
repository, a digital repository hosting datasets underlying publications in the
field of evolutionary biology. This report details efforts to bring the Dryad
application profile into conformance with the Singapore Framework and discusses
practical issues underlying the application profile implementation in a DSpace
environment. The report concludes by outlining the next steps planned for Dryad a
junii2 and AIRway: An Application Profile for Scholarly Works and Its Application for Link Resolvers
A large number of scholarly works is self-archived at the
university’s Open Access repositories. Researchers can search these materials using
general web search engines, OAI-PMH-based search engines, or by using federated
search services. However, it remains difficult for researchers to access materials
in these repositories using standard academic databases. The National Institute of
Informatics (NII) in Japan has developed a DC application profile called junii2 for
scholarly works. The AIRway Project (Access path to Institutional Resources via link
resolvers) has used this profile to develop a new way of connecting university
repositories with academic databases via link resolvers
Integrating Dublin Core and Learning Object Metadata for Describing Learning Objects for Enhanced Reusability
A repository of learning objects (LOs) is being built to investigate the usability aspects of LOs as part of a doctoral dissertation project. Enhanced description of LOs is considered an important step in this effort. Among other things, use of metadata and taxonomies are being explored for enhancing the description to promote use and reuse of LOs. Our initial review indicated that the various metadata schemes currently in use do not adequately support description of special features of LOs, e.g., granularity and reusability. However, features from different schemes can be combined to develop a profile that can effectively support the peculiarities of LOs. Leveraging on the flexibility in the design of Dublin Core and its provisions of refinement and extension of elements, we decided to extend certain DCMI-EDS elements by integrating some elements from IEEE-LOM to cover requirements of LOs. This paper describes the elements from the two schemes and discusses the issues that need to be addressed to make this work. We also suggest the addition of new metadata terms that describe granularity and reusability. We hope that this example may be useful for developing an application profile for describing learning objects in various repositories
Integrating Dublin Core Metadata for Cultural Heritage Collections Using Ontologies
Cultural heritage collections are related to historical events and depict the customs of human societies. Their main characteristic is that they consist of heterogeneous objects, which usually are described by a variety of metadata schemas. Dublin Core Metadata Initiative plays a significant role in the interoperability of such collections. This paper proposes the exploitation of the CIDOC/CRM ontology as a mediating schema to which metadata sources can be mapped and integrated. In this context a methodology for mapping DC Types Vocabulary terms to CIDOC/CRM is presented, demonstrating a real-world effort for ontology-based metadata integration
