Is Tagging Effective? – Overlapping Ratios with Other Metadata Fields
The potential advantages of tagging have been addressed in numerous literatures. However, the effectiveness of tagging in information retrieval has not yet been confirmed. There is continuous intensive debate between advocates of new tagging systems and those of traditional controlled vocabulary metadata. Despite all the potential advantages of tagging, the overlapping ratios between tags and the words used in other metadata fields, such as title and description, are significant. In this study, with the data from Youtube.com videos, the degree of overlapping is examined among the fields of title, description and tag, with additional questions about tagging, such as changes in numbers of words in each metadata field over time and the difference between web site promotion videos and non-promotion videos
Metadata Framework for Manga: A Multi-paradigm Metadata Description Framework for Digital Comics
Manga - a Japanese word meaning comics, cartoons and graphic novels - is very popular in Japan and has been gaining broader recognition in the world. This paper discusses a metadata model of manga to find, access, use and reuse mangas in the networked digital environment. The metadata framework for manga proposed in this paper is defined from three aspects – bibliographic description, logical and physical structures, and intellectual entities contained in a manga. We use the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and TV-Anytime as the base schemes for bibliographic description and structural description, respectively. LCSH, SKOS and Linked Data
A technique for converting Library of Congress Subject Headings
MARCXML to Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) RDF is described. Strengths
of the SKOS vocabulary are highlighted, as well as possible points for extension,
and the integration of other semantic web vocabularies such as Dublin Core. An
application for making the vocabulary available as linked-data on the Web is also
described
Web 2.0 Semantic Systems: Collaborative Learning in Science
Bot 2.0 is a collaboration involving the North Carolina
Botanical Garden, the UNC SILS Metadata Research center, and the Renaissance
Computing Institute (RENCI). Bot 2.0 presents a curriculum utilizing a memex as a
way for students to link and share digital information, working asynchronously in an
environment beyond the traditional classroom. Our conception of a memex is not a
centralized black box but rather a flexible, distributed framework that uses the
most salient and easiest-to-use collaborative platforms (e.g., Facebook, Flickr,
wiki and blog technology) for personal information management. By meeting students
“where they live” digitally, we hope to attract students to the study of botanical
science. A key aspect is to teach students scientific terminology and about the
value of metadata, an inherent function in several of the technologies and in the
instructional approach we are utilizing. This poster will report on a study
examining metadata use and comprehension of students from four U.S. post-secondary
institutions. Our data is drawn from a plant identification curriculum involving an
independent learning portion and a "BotCamp" weekend on the UNC campus
A Conceptual Framework for Metadata Quality Assessment
Metadata quality of digital resources in a repository is an
issue directly associated with the repository’s efficiency and value. In this paper,
the subject of metadata quality is approached by introducing a new conceptual
framework that defines it in terms of its fundamental components. Additionally, a
method for assessing these components by exploiting structural and semantic
relations among the resources is presented. These relations can be used to generate
implied logic rules, which include, impose or prohibit certain values in the fields
of a metadata record. The use of such rules can serve as a tool for conducting
quality control in the records, in order to diagnose deficiencies and errors
Assessing Descriptive Substance in Free-Text Collection-Level Metadata
When many collections are brought together in a federation or
aggregation, the attributes of the original collections can get lost.
Collection-level metadata has the potential to provide important context about the
purpose and features of individual collections, but these qualitative aspects are
difficult to describe in a systematic way. This paper reports on a content analysis
of collection records in the IMLS Digital Collections and Content Collection
Registry, conducted to analyze the kinds of substantive and purposeful information
provided about 202 cultural heritage collections. The findings show that the Dublin
Core free-text Description field often provides more accurate and complete
representation of subjects and object types than the specified fields. Properties
such as importance, uniqueness, comprehensiveness, provenance, and creator are
represented, as well as other vital contextual information about the intentions of a
collector and the value of a collection, as a whole, for scholarly users. The
results demonstrate that semantically rich free-text Description field can provide a
valuable source of data for enhancing and customizing controlled vocabularies and
that there is a need for collection-level metadata schema that better represent
holistic properties of collections
Cool URIs for the DDC: Towards Web-scale Accessibility of a Large Classification System
The report discusses metadata strategies employed and problems
encountered during the first step of transforming the DDC into a Web information
resource. It focuses on the process of URI design, with regard to W3C
recommendations and Semantic Web paradigms. Special emphasis is placed on usefulness
of the URIs for RESTful web services
Answering the Call for more Accountability: Applying Data Profiling to Museum Metadata
Although the issue of metadata quality has attracted quite some
attention within the metadata research community, the cultural heritage sector is
still waiting for the development of methodologies, guidelines and tools to tackle
this topic in practice. Research has mainly focused its attention on the library
community and aggregated content projects. This article concentrates on the
specificity of metadata quality within the museum sector, and describes the
possibilities of data-profiling techniques regarding metadata quality evaluation, by
applying a general-purpose data-profiling tool on a large collection of metadata
records of an ethnographic collection. Based on the results of this case study, we
propose further steps in our research, and present the implementation of a metadata
quality tool within an open-source collection management software
Open Identification and Linking of the Four Ws
Platforms for social computing connect users via shared
references to people with whom they have relationships, events attended, places
lived in or traveled to, and topics such as favorite books or movies. This model
needn't be limited to social networking sites. Understanding an item in a digital
library or museum requires context: information about the topics, places, events,
and people to which the item is related. Students, journalists and investigators
traditionally discover this kind context by asking “the four Ws”: what, where, when
and who. We are building open, distributed systems that allow users to ask and
answer these questions via links to appropriate contextual resources
The State of the Art in Tag Ontologies: A Semantic Model for Tagging and Folksonomies
There is a growing interest on how we represent and share
tagging data for the purpose of collaborative tagging systems. Conventional tags,
however, are not naturally suited for collaborative processes. Being free-text
keywords, they are exposed to linguistic variations like case (upper vs lower),
grammatical number (singular vs. plural) as well as human typing errors.
Additionally, tags depend on the personal views of the world by individual users,
and are not normalized for synonymy, morphology or any other mapping. The bottom
line of the problem is that tags have no semantics whatsoever. Moreover, even if a
user gives some semantics to a tag while using or viewing it, this meaning is not
automatically shared with computers since it’s not defined in a machine-readable
way. With tagging systems increasing in popularity each day, the evolution of this
technology is hindered by this problem. In this paper we discuss approaches to
represent tagging activities at a semantic level. We present criteria for the
comparison of existing tag ontologies and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in
relation to these criteria
