    Protocol for visual-acoustic intervention with service delivery in-person and via telepractice (VISIT) non-inferiority trial for residual speech sound disorder

    Background: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that negatively impacts social and academic participation. Telepractice service delivery has the potential to expand access to technology-enhanced intervention methods that can help remediate RSSD, but it is not known whether remote service delivery is associated with a reduction in the efficacy of these methods. This project will systematically measure the outcomes of visual-acoustic biofeedback intervention when delivered in-person or online. Methods/design: This project, Visual-acoustic Intervention with Service delivery In-person and via Telepractice (VISIT), aims to treat 76 children in a parallel randomized controlled clinical trial in which children with RSSD will receive visual-acoustic biofeedback treatment either in person or via telepractice. Eligible children will be speakers of American English aged 9–17 years who exhibit RSSD affecting /ɹ/ but otherwise show cognitive-linguistic and hearing abilities within the typical range. All participants will receive twenty sessions of visual-acoustic biofeedback; they will be randomized, with stratification by pre-treatment speech production ability and site, to complete their treatment sessions either in the laboratory setting or at home via telepractice. For the primary outcome measure, blinded listeners will evaluate changes in the perceived accuracy of /ɹ/ production after the end of treatment. Discussion: By comparing outcomes in children randomized to receive a standard course of biofeedback treatment either via telepractice or in-person, this study will provide evidence-based guidance for clinicians seeking flexible service delivery options for a challenging and prevalent condition.     Source Apportionment and Potential Health Risks of Trace Metals in a Contaminated Urban River in New York/New Jersey Harbor System

    The Lower Passaic River (LPR), located within the New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuarine System, has experienced long-term industrial activities, resulting in elevated concentrations of trace metals in sediment and water. This study aims to assess the bioaccumulation behavior, potential human health risks, and sources of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) in the LPR. Trace metal concentrations were measured in water, sediment, and seven edible aquatic species. Data were analyzed using statistical approaches, and evaluated by bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) and human health risk assessments based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidelines. Results showed that Hg exhibited the highest bioaccumulation potential among the studied metals, except for Cu in Callinectes sapidus. Non-carcinogenic risks from the consumption of aquatic species followed the order Cu \u3e Hg \u3e Pb, with total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values below 1, suggesting the non-carcinogenic health risk is negligible for adults and for most species in children, except C. sapidus and Morone americana. Carcinogenic risks for all species were within the acceptable threshold (Target Risk \u3c 1 × 10−4). Sensitivity analysis indicated that body weight and exposure duration primarily influenced children’s carcinogenic risk, whereas trace metal concentrations were more significant for adults. Overall, this study provides insight into contaminant dynamics and health implications in a legacy-contaminated urban river system

    Phosphorylation deficient inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER) modulates tumorigenesis and survival in a transgenic zebrafish (Danio rerio) model of melanoma

    Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, is commonly associated with mutations in the BRAF gene, particularly BRAFV600E, which drives tumor proliferation via the ERK1/2 signaling cascade. While BRAF inhibitors initially demonstrate efficacy, therapeutic resistance remains a significant challenge. Emerging evidence implicates the cAMP signaling pathway, particularly the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and its repressor, inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER), in melanoma progression and drug resistance. ICER, a transcriptional repressor regulated via Ras/MAPK-mediated phosphorylation and ubiquitination, is degraded in melanoma, undermining its tumor-suppressive role. In a brafV600E; p53 (loss of function) transgenic zebrafish (Danio rerio) model, we investigated the role of a ubiquitin-resistant ICER mutant (S35-41A-ICER) in tumor progression. Transgenic fish expressing S35-41A-ICER exhibited extended survival and reduced tumor invasiveness compared to wild-type ICER. RNA sequencing revealed dysregulation of CREB/CREM targets and compensatory pathways, including Rap1 and PI3K/AKT signaling, as well as candidate gene targets of ICER regulation, including the protein kinase A catalytic subunit prkacaa. Our findings suggest that a ubiquitin resistant ICER mitigates melanoma progression and represses oncogenic pathways in a brafV600E melanoma context

    X versus reality: Data suggests political posts on X are inconsistent with voter behavior

    This study from Montclair State University researchers in the Joetta Di Bella and Fred C. Sautter III Center for Strategic Communication in the College of Communication and Media shows that the volume of political posts on X (formerly Twitter) may not reflect actual voter behavior. The gap between post volume about candidates and real election votes was nearly 40% in the analyzed case of the New Jersey gubernatorial election. Contributing factors to this gap may include the volume of ostensibly “American” political accounts that are foreign sourced, bot-based activity, and overall platform infrastructure/algorithms. Results identified 108,640 posts for Mikie Sherrill with 230,277 posts for Jack Ciattarelli in the period studied with nearly 5X the total number of posts for Ciattarelli over Sherrill on Election Day. Additionally, the study found 15.5% more posts on X expressing a positive sentiment for Ciattarelli in the same period. Despite this, final vote totals for the election favored Sherrill by nearly 14%
