Editorial: Recent advances in research and development for vegetable crops under protected cultivation
Protected cultivation is the production of horticultural crops including vegetables under structures such as forced-ventilated greenhouses, shade net houses, poly houses, net houses, high and low plastic tunnels, where the external growing environment can be controlled or modified to suit crop growth requirements. In regions where the environmental conditions such as weather, soil and water are not suitable to grow specific vegetables, or in urban areas with limited arable land, this farming system is very important to ensure high, stable productivity and good quality vegetables. This enables a stable supply for the market all year round, bringing high economic return to growers. This research area has been receiving much attention from the commercial vegetable production sector and scientific community. With the aim to contribute to the understanding of this research area, this Research Topic was designed to collect the latest scientific research and development in protected cropping for commercial vegetable production. Eight original research and review articles were already published with the invaluable contribution of 54 authors coming from 20 research institutions in 7 countries. Spatial characterisation and drivers of catch and effort in highly specialised recreational pelagic fisheries
Large pelagic finfish are highly mobile, distributed across broad geographical scales, and often targeted by both commercial and recreational sectors. Fishing effort in these fisheries is variable due to seasonal patterns in fish behaviour and accessibility of fishing locations. Similarly, fisher behaviour and access are likely to differ within the recreational sector, between private boat-based fishing and charter (or for hire) fishing. Here, we compare spatio-temporal patterns in catch per unit effort (CPUE), effort (boat days) and catch (total catch per fishing party) for private boat-based and charter fishing, and identify environmental variables that may influence those patterns, for two pelagic species (the tropical narrow-barred Spanish mackerel and temperate Samson fish) in Western Australia. Spatial and temporal patterns of CPUE were investigated using geostatistical indices, such as the global and local index of collocation which compares the spatial distribution of CPUE locations across years and CPUE values at common locations respectively, and the centre of gravity which calculates the mean fishing location weighted by CPUE, along with the influence of environmental variables (including rainfall and sea surface temperature) on catch using generalised additive models (GAMs). The global index of collocation showed consistency in spatial distribution of CPUE and effort between private boat-based and charter fishing for both species. In contrast, the local index of collocation showed differences in the ranges of CPUE and effort within common locations. Private boat-based fishing often occurred close to the coast and adjacent to population centres, while charter fishing occurred further offshore. Spatial shifts over time were more prominent for Spanish mackerel with an overall northerly shift. For private boat-based fishing, higher catches of Spanish mackerel were associated with higher rainfall, along with an increase in ambient air temperature. For charter fishing, higher catches of Spanish mackerel occurred with ambient air temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius and a decrease in rainfall, where high catches of Samson fish were associated with a decrease in sea surface temperatures and austral winter months. This study highlights changes in the distributions of pelagic species over time and the potential to incorporate spatio-temporal monitoring of recreational harvest into fisheries management

Cotton in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA)
Cotton has been grown very successfully in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) of Western Australia.
Cotton was grown commercially in the ORIA between 1964 and 1974. The early industry was subsidised by the Western Australian Government. The industry failed due to an inability to control major insect pests, and problems with quality. The industry never achieved economic yields, and short fibre length and discolouration resulted in substantial discounts.
Cotton has been the dominant irrigated crop in the ORIA since 2021. A cotton production system based on genetically modified varieties has been developed for the ORIA, based on intensive local research which started in 1996

Estimating depth from single RGB images and videos is of widespread interest due to its applications in many areas, including autonomous driving, 3D reconstruction, digital entertainment, and robotics. More than 500 deep learning-based papers have been published in the past 10 years, which indicates the growing interest in the task. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the existing deep learning-based methods, the challenges they address, and how they have evolved in their architecture and supervision methods. It provides a taxonomy for classifying the current work based on their input and output modalities, network architectures, and learning methods. It also discusses the major milestones in the history of monocular depth estimation, and different pipelines, datasets, and evaluation metrics used in existing methods
Value of horticulture industries in Western Australia 2022-2023
The horticulture sector in Western Australia (WA) produces high quality fruit, vegetables, nuts and amenity horticulture. Western Australians benefit from consuming this steady supply of diverse, affordable and sustainably grown fresh fruit and vegetables. Amenity horticulture, in the form of parks and gardens, adds a great richness to the quality of life in WA.
It is estimated that WA produced 831 million worth of vegetables, 343 million of nuts and amenity horticulture. Carrots were the largest vegetable crop both by quantity and value, constituting 13% of the total value of vegetables. However, when fresh market (ware) and seed potatoes are combined, the potato industry is valued at $126 million, which is 15% of the total value of vegetables. Avocados were the largest fruit crop, representing 21% of the total value of fruit production
