    New Approaches to Robust Inference on Market (Non-)efficiency, Volatility Clustering and Nonlinear Dependence

    We present novel, robust methods for inference on market (non-)efficiency, volatility clustering, and nonlinear dependence in financial return series. In contrast to existing methodology, our proposed methods are robust against nonlinear dynamics and tail-heaviness of returns. Specifically, our methods only rely on return processes being stationary and weakly dependent (mixing) with finite moments of a suitable order. This includes robustness against power-law distributions associated with nonlinear dynamic models such as GARCH and stochastic volatility. The methods are easy to implement and perform well in realistic settings. We revisit a recent study by Baltussen, van Bekkum, and Da (2019, J. Financ. Econ., 132, 26–48) on autocorrelation in major stock indexes.     Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 in young children with moderate acute malnutrition:secondary analysis of a randomized trial in Burkina Faso

    Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is an important growth factor in childhood. We aimed to investigate the impact of food supplements for treatment of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) on serum IGF-1 (sIGF-1). Secondary analysis of a randomized 2×2×3 factorial nutrition trial was performed. Children aged 6-23 months with MAM received 2093 kJ/day as lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS) or corn-soy blend (CSB), containing either dehulled soy or soy isolate and different quantities of dried skimmed milk (0%, 20% or 50% of total protein) for 12 weeks. The trial was double-blind with regard to soy and milk, but not to matrix (LNS vs. CSB). sIGF-1 was measured at inclusion and after 12 weeks supplementation. Of 1609 children enrolled, 1455 (90%) had sIGF-1 measured at both time points. During supplementation sIGF-1 increased 6.7 (95%CI 6.1; 7.3) ng/ml compared with an expected age-dependent decrease of 0.3 (95%CI 0.2; 0.4) ng/ml. Children who received LNS vs. CSB had lower increase in sIGF-1 (-8%, 95%CI -12; -3). The effect of LNS was partly attenuated when sIGF-1 was corrected for inflammation. Children who received soy isolate compared with dehulled soy had higher increase in sIGF-1 (6%, 95%CI 1; 12). Milk content did not affect sIGF-1. Overall, sIGF-1 increased during supplementation. The lower increase with LNS vs. CSB was only partly explained by increased inflammation with LNS, and needs further investigation. Isolate vs. dehulled soy led to a higher increase which may be due to antinutrients in dehulled soy.</p

    Emigrant Literature, World Literature, National Literature:The Case of Georg Brandes

    This article examines Georg Brandes’ comparative method and notions of emigrant literature, world literature, and national literature, comparing them to Goethe’s and Milan Kundera’s ideas of world literature, and drawing on Emily Apter’s concept of untranslatability. It is argued that Brandes, like Apter, valorizes an untranslatable dimension of language in his paradoxical notion of world literature as the most national literature, whereas Goethe and Kundera consider translations to be unproblematic as a result of their belief in linguistic transparency. Where Goethe accentuated cultural similarities and universalism, Brandes was keen to stress cultural differences. His cosmopolitanism was firmly rooted in the local, national, and regional. The article further argues that Goethe’s concept of Weltliteratur was centered on a theory of circulation and infrastructure. In contrast, both Brandes and Kundera placed emphasis on intra-literary qualities, Brandes primarily linguistic qualities, Kundera more specifically existential and formal newness. Each of the three positions has its merits and supplement each other. Together, they provide us with an understanding of the significance of the field of world literature as both an aesthetic and sociological phenomenon

    Quantum Geometry and Bounds on Dissipation in Slowly Driven Quantum Systems

    We show that energy dissipation in slowly driven, Markovian quantum systems at low temperature is linked to the geometry of the driving protocol through the quantum (or Fubini-Study) metric. Utilizing these findings, we establish lower bounds on dissipation rates in two-tone protocols, such as those employed for topological frequency conversion. Notably, in appropriate limits these bounds are only determined by the topology of the protocol and an effective quality factor of the system-bath coupling. Our results bridge topological and geometric phenomena with energy dissipation in open quantum systems, and further provide design principles for optimal driving protocols.</p
