Three-dimensional warfare – the invention of aerial combat
Get PDFOn 24 September 1910 the British Flight magazine published as its lead article (‘The New Arm’) a piece on the recent Grand Autumn Manoeuvre of the French Army in Picardy. For the first time in history, military aircraft had been deployed on both sides in a reconnaissance and artillery spotting role. The article stated that ‘the aeroplane, even in its present stage of development, has already resulted in an urgent need for the entire revision of all accepted schemes of tactics in warfare.

Refreshing then to encounter this array of printed postcards splashed across the walls of the corridor leading to the first floor cafeteria deep inside St Georges Hospital. This open submission, inclusive exhibition comprises both artworks and wool words. There are over 200 pictures on display – or there were, but more on this later – and over 100 wool words created by student nurses in response to the Nurses Reaching Out project, which supplies woollen clothing for new born babies in Uganda

Get PDFIn the final scene in Vera Chytilová’s Daisies (1966), its two plucky protagonists, Marie I (Jitka Cerhová) and Marie II (Ivana Karbanová), enter a banquet room where excess – of nourishment and provision – leads to an elaborate and entertaining act of destruction. The scene is spectacular and vulgar; its grand depictions of food waste were responsible for the former Czechoslovakia’s ban on both the film and its maker. Chytilová was held accountable for her supposed lack of a positive attitude towards socialism. Apparently irony is not welcome when its execution involves waste. The paradox inherent in both Chytilová’s film and the very concept of social decline is that it must be enacted in order to be made visible: the food we watch Marie I and Marie II eat, throw, dance on, and destroy is food that will never make it into the mouths of the hungry
Apuleius and the Esoteric Revival: An Ancient Decadent in Modern Times
Get PDFThis article seeks to excavate a noteworthy source of inspiration for the interlocking decadent and esoteric movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the classical Latin writer Apuleius. Apuleius’ life and works brought together decadent literature, magic, witchcraft and the esoteric strand in pagan religion – the same conjunction that later manifested itself in Britain and France in the late Victorian era. Apuleius is sometimes referred to in the academic literature as an influence on modern decadence and the occult revival, but no sustained study of his role in this regard has yet been produced. This essay will proceed in the following way. First, we will undertake an overview of Apuleius and his novel The Golden Ass. Second, we will locate the position that Apuleius occupied in the literary context of the nineteenth century, with particular reference to the decadent tradition. Third, we will survey his influence on the modern esoteric revival in general. Finally, we will examine specifically his influence on revived goddess-worship
Decadent New Woman’s Ironic Subversions: L. Onerva’s Multi-layered Irony
Get PDFThis extract is taken from the novel Mirdja (1908) by the Finnish writer L. Onerva (pen name of Hilja Onerva Lehtinen, 1882-1972), often referred to as the most Decadent novel and one of the first ‘subject-centred novels’ in the literature written in Finnish. One of the minor characters, the painter Bengt Iro, becomes the object of the female protagonist Mirdja’s gaze. Mirdja tries to upend the usual dynamics of the man as an artist-creator and woman enjoying the role of musa inspiratrix. The text feels ironic at first sight – upon closer reading, the novel appears literally permeated by irony. However, after a second reading, the irony appears to work on various levels, leaving the reader in a state of confusion

The Introduction of New German Defensive Tactics in 1916-1917
Get PDFResponding to the crisis posed by the battle of the Somme, in late 1916 the German army introduced new defensive tactics. It has been suggested that formal, top-down doctrine was a less important driver of this change than the bottom-up system of after-action reports, and that once initial resistance was overcome the new tactics were successfully adopted throughout the army. This article draws on little-studied archival material to reveal how doctrine evolved by stages in a complex combination of action, after-action reports, personalities and the high command’s desire to impose greater top-down control. Throughout this period, doctrine remained key to tactical change, but its implementation was patchier than the German army’s reputation suggests
