EnvironmentalFactors_EasternUS
Raster maps of present-day and historical environmental factors for the Eastern United States. The environmental factors are the outcome of factor analysis on 19 bioclimatic variables (Worldclim 1.4), resulting in four factors capturing: temperature range, summer temperature, dry- and wet-season precipitation. The temporal scale includes the present (1960-1990), the Mid-Holocene (~6,000 years ago), the Last Glacial Maximum (~22,000 years ago), and the Last Inter-glacial (~120,000-140,000 years ago). The spatial scale covers a large part of the Eastern United States (28-41 N, 74-91 W)

Data from: The role of metalloproteases in fertilisation in the ascidian Ciona robusta
In the ascidian Ciona robusta (formerly C. intestinalis type A), the mechanism underlying sperm penetration through the egg investment remains unknown. We previously reported that proteins containing both an astacin metalloprotease domain and thrombospondin type 1 repeats are abundant in the sperm surface protein-enriched fraction of C. robusta. Here we investigated the involvement of those proteins in fertilisation. We refined the sequences of astacin metalloproteases, confirmed that five of them are present in the sperm, and labelled them as tunicate astacin and thrombospondin type 1 repeat-containing (Tast) proteins. Fertilisation of C. robusta eggs was potently inhibited by a metalloprotease inhibitor GM6001. The eggs cleaved normally when they were vitelline coat-free or the inhibitor was added after insemination. Furthermore, vitelline coat proteins were degraded after incubation with intact sperm. These results suggest that sperm metalloproteases are indispensable for fertilisation, probably owing to direct or indirect mediation of vitelline-coat digestion during sperm penetration. TALEN-mediated knockout of Tast genes and the presence of GM6001 impaired larval development at the metamorphic stage, suggesting that Tast gene products play a key role in late development

Temperature and precipitation data collected on Hudson Bay Mountain (alpine field site) over the years 2003, 2004, 3005, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011. Data was collected by Alaine Camfield, Kathy Martin and Will MacKenzie. SA stands for 'Smithers Airport' which was the closest weather station with available precipitation data early in the study when precipitation was not available for the study site. Understanding the genetic basis of local adaptation has long been the focus of evolutionary biology. Recently there has been increased interest in deciphering the evolutionary role of Daphnia’s plasticity and the molecular mechanisms of local adaptation. Using transcriptome data, we assessed the differences in gene expression profiles and sequences within and between four European Daphnia galeata populations. To distinguish neutral from adaptive differentiation, we corrected for phylogenetic differentiation of Daphnia populations. We also applied a “transcriptome scan” approach to investigate the role of natural selection in shaping divergent expression profiles among populations. Furthermore, a SNP analysis allowed inferring population structure and the distribution of genetic variation. Using sequence information, the transcripts were annotated using a comparative genomics approach. In total, ~33% of 32903 transcripts were differentially expressed between populations. Among 10280 differentially expressed transcripts, 5209 transcripts deviated from neutral expectations and were likely involved in local adaptation. The population divergence at the sequence level was higher than at the gene expression level by several orders of magnitude and revealed very distinct clusters according to population origin. Our analysis revealed the respective roles of genetic drift and selection in the four Daphnia populations. This study is a first attempt to understand the genetic background of adaptation to environmental changes in a key species of aquatic ecosystems in absence of any laboratory induced stressor
