Turbine Output Improvement by Lowering the Ambient Temperature and Elimination of Humidity

    No full text
Areas that experience high temperatures during hot seasons suffer significant losses in production capacity and gas turbine efficiency. When the air temperature increases, the flow rate of the air mass decreases, and thus this leads to a decrease in the energy produced by gas turbines. In this regard, atmospheric air can be cooled using evaporative or absorption chillers. Emphasis was placed in this project on the effect of air temperature on the performance of the North Benghazi power plant. The results showed that the higher the air temperature, the lower the flow mass and the capacity of the turbine shaft. In addition, an increase in the air temperature leads to a decrease in the thermal efficiency. It was also evident from our study that any increase in the percentage of steam in the surrounding atmosphere at the expense of dry air for the same volume of the mixture of dry air and water vapor together leads to a decrease in the weight of the total mass of the volume of this mixture and accordingly reduces the capacity of the turbine shaft and vice versa. &nbsp

Capital Structure and Financial Reporting Quality; Evidence from Listed Consumer Goods firms of Selected Commonwealth African Countries

    Get PDF
The study investigates the effect of capital structure on financial reporting quality by employing samples from listed consumer goods manufacturing firms of selected Commonwealth African countries between the periods of 2011-2020. Particularly, the study provides evidence on the effect of capital structure on the financial reporting quality of listed consumer goods firms in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. We conducted pool least square regression before proceeding to check for inconsistencies with the basic assumptions of the OLS regression. The diagnostic test reveals the absence of both multicollinearity and heteroscedasticity, hence implying that the OLS estimates can be employed for policy interpretation and recommendation. The results shows that firms which have higher debt in their capital structure are prone to higher agency cost. Particularly, the study fails to confirm the position of Agency theory to explain the relationship between firm leverage and financial reporting quality. Hence, the study concludes that financial reports may be used to avoid agency costs and to reduce information asymmetries. Hence, we recommend that firms with high leverage positions must be scrutinized keenly by both shareholders, auditors, and regulatory bodies as the propensity for low quality reporting indicative of manipulatory tendencies could be stronge

THE INTRACTABILITY OF VIOLENT CONFLICT IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF PLATEAU STATE

    Get PDF
Nigeria grapples with a number of longstanding conflicts across regions. Plateau State is volatile and suffers episodic violent conflict. The state is trapped in a vicious cycle of violence which has escalated with great intensity especially in the last decade leading to great loss of lives and properties, displacements of individuals from their homes as well as a deeply divided society. All efforts by state and non-state actors to address the lingering conflict appears inadequate. Previous studies relate the conflict to ethno-religious crises, violent intercommunal, sectarian and resource-based conflicts yet, understanding and addressing the complexity of the conflict remains daunting. Hence, this study attempts to address this puzzle by explaining the intractability of the violent conflict in Plateau State. To achieve this, the study examines the dynamics and actors, to the recurring conflict. A case study approach has been applied is carrying out the study using broad sources of data including Key Informant Interview (KII), observation, and secondary sources such as journals, books and official reports. The study suggests that the crises in Plateau State evolved through five phases which are influenced by competing citizens claim, mutual feeling of victimisation and the activities of violent entrepreneurs. It identifies media, ethnic groups, political actors, youth group, arm dealers, security agencies, and government agencies as the major actors in the conflict who are mostly motivated by identity, human needs and, profiteering interests. The Study concludes by advocating for a short, medium and long terms solutions anchored on multi-stakeholder approach

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the contribution of process innovation capability, IT integration and flexibility to innovation performance in the Malaysian electrics and electronics (E&E) sector. This study adopted a quantitative approach. Questionnaires were distributed to Malaysian E&E manufacturers registered with the Federations of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) via email and postal mail. A total of 52 valid responses were obtained and analyzed using correlation analysis. A significant but weak relationship was found between IT integration and innovation performance. A significant and strong relationship was found between process innovation capability and innovation performance. The study is among the first to look specifically at Malaysia’s E&E sector. The findings are of interest to academics as well as to public and private sector practitioners in directing resources to integrating IT and increasing the process innovation capability to achieve enhanced innovation performance

Interest Rate Spread, Exchange Rate and Manufacturing Output in Nigeria

    Get PDF
This study examines the impact of interest rate spread and exchange rate volatility on manufacturing output in Nigeria between the periods of 1981-2020. Secondary data were collected from the CBN statistical bulletin, 2020 and World Bank. In the regression model estimated, the dependent variable was manufacturing output (MQ) while the explanatory variables used include exchange rate (EXCHT), interest rate spread (IRS), inflation (INF), foreign direct investment (FDI), credit to private sector (CPS) and government capital expenditure (GCAP). In order to reduce the problem of stationarity and structural breaks associated with the time series data, the model was logged. The work adopted the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method of estimation and employed Newey-West-HAC to correct heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation problems intrinsically. Unit root test was carried out to check if the variables were stationary and the ADF test showed that there exists a cointegrating or long run relationship between the dependent and explanatory variables. Ramsey RESET tests was also carried out. The result revealed that, despite being significant, a negative relationship exists between foreign direct investment and manufacturing output. Consequently, the work recommends that government should adopt policies that prevents crowding out effect in the economy as well as encourage the consumption of locally made products. Also, the government must embark on a massive overhaul of our morbid physical infrastructure (power, road, rail and ports) if we are to achieve a sustainable economy and a virile manufacturing sector. The findings also show that government capital expenditure is significant but negatively related to capital formation. In view of this, the study recommends that government should adopt effective measures, policies and programs that foster accountability and transparency in the method of spending public funds in Nigeria

Impact of Nigerian Agricultural Expenditure on Agricultural Sector Output

    Get PDF
This research examines the impact of Nigerian agricultural expenditure on agricultural sector output. To achieve this, time series data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria were analyzed using the Error Correction Model (ECM). The findings indicate that both government capital and recurrent agricultural expenditures have positive relationships with agricultural sector output. However, only capital expenditure had significant impact on agricultural sector output in Nigeria. The implication of this finding is that if the federal government channels more budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector, agricultural sector output will increase in the long-run. The findings also showed that there was an inverse relationship between interest rate and inflation rate against agricultural sector output. This implies that the monetary authorities should consider lowering interest rate and combating inflation a monetary policy priority. In conclusion, the study recommended that agricultural budget execution rate should be improved through quick budget passage and timely implementation. More importantly, such expenditures should be closely monitored

Sit-At-Home Order and Economic Growth of Southeastern Nigeria

    Get PDF
Sit-at-Home order imposed by an organisation known as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has become a recurring word among about 22 million Southeast dwellers in Nigeria as such there is virtually none movement of persons on specified days. Every Monday since mid 2021 has been marked as a none movement day in the region pending the release of her leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kalu from detention. This study with a sample of 1000 respondents in a survey research design adopted descriptive and Chi-Square techniques to examine the effects of Sit-at-Home on economic growth of Southeastern Nigeria. The results which were supported by both descriptive statistics outcome and test of hypothesis revealed that economic growth is negatively affected by the IPOB sit-at-home order. By implication, any order restricting people going about their daily businesses is inimical to economic health of such region. This study recommends that government should come to terms of agreement with the IPOB hierarchy to restore sound business environment for expected level of investment inflow in the Southeast region

Contemporary Tax Controversies: Lessons from Developed Nations

    Get PDF
One of the major challenges confronting tax jurisdictions all over the world is generating tax revenues that will at least be sufficient to take care of public sector expenditure requirements under an equitable, growth - friendly, fair and economically efficient tax system. A number of tax issues   are currently being discussed globally in an effort to achieve that objective. Global taxes have also been proposed. This study intends to review those trending global tax matters with the aim of finding out what they are and how they are being addressed   by developed countries.  The materials for the study are obtained from peer-reviewed articles published in Research Gate, Goggle Scholar and Science Direct, among others, as well as publications by some public authorities and notable international organizations. It finds that the entire global tax system is far from being ideal. Several countries under the Globe are found putting a lot of strategies in place jointly and severally in an attempt to fix the global tax and international taxation challenges. Some international bodies like the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the European Union, World Health Organization, the G-20, and others are equally lending their support to make the dream a reality. This study concludes that while some of the global tax proposals appear inappropriate or inadequately designed, others deserve serious attention
