Exploring Destination Engagement of Sharing Economy Accommodation: Case of Australian Second-Homes
No full textDigital platforms operating in the colloquially termed sharing economy (SE) are disrupting tourism, notably accommodation with growth in peer-to-peer (P2P) rentals. Second-home rentals constitute an important segment of SE ‘entire homes’ as revealed by Airbnb, SE’s largest accommodation platform, with over seven million listings in 2019. Concurrent to SE micro-accommodation growth, global tourism organizations promote local engagement of all tourism enterprises to build sustainable destinations. Lack of understanding SE second-home engagement in destination networks and development activities is a significant knowledge gap. In response, this qualitative study explores regional tourism engagement of numbers of SE second-homes to help achieve local destination management organizations’ (DMOs) sustainable development goals. Research methods incorporate three Australian regional cases using interviews, web observations and secondary data to investigate perspectives of destination engagement of second-home rentals. Findings uncover power shifts in case regions that have created vacuums in local tourism ecosystems now being filled by Airbnb and accommodation platforms. Analysis of factors influencing engagement in destination development activities indicates second-home localized marketing and collaborative efforts are eroding under current tourism business models

Mathematics from the Ground up: An Emerging Model for Enriching Mathematical Learning for Children aged 4–12 using a School Garden Program
No full textMeaningful and enjoyable experiences are important in the education of children. In this qualitative case study, the garden program (incl. market garden shop, garden care, Kid’s Kitchen, and chicken coop) in one Australian primary school was explored to determine its impact on the mathematical learning of children. Data were collected using focus groups (four student, three parent and three volunteer groups), three teacher interviews, weekly garden journal entries and, when possible, through observation. This program provided opportunities for enriched mathematical learning facilitated by: early exposure to mathematical applications through mixed-age groups at different stations; an authentic, real-life setting to apply mathematical learning; and the consolidation of mathematical experiences through weekly engagement. These program features were found to positively impact the mathematical readiness, attitudes and competence of students
Directions in Delphi Developments: Dissertations and their Quality
No full textThe general question of whether Delphi users have learned from Delphi research of the past decade is addressed in this article. Within the wider context of Delphi expansion anddevelopment, specific attention is given to examining the nature and quality of the growing number of Delphi dissertations. Although there are some signs for encouragement, the findings from the sample of dissertationsexamined might also give cause for some concern. Findings raise continuing questions related to excellencein the execution of Delphi studies and also to the concentration of applications of the technique in certain fields. It appears that the future of Delphi could be brighter if users of the technique would be more careful in implementing quality control. . © 1986. Published by Elsevier
