A constraint-aware controller for renewable power plant operation under communication delays
The control of reactive power at the point of interconnection in large wind farms and PV plants poses a significant challenge. With PV/Wind units scattered over several kilometers and numbering in the hundreds, coordinating them effectively becomes a complex task, especially when accounting for potential delays in communications with the central controller. This paper presents a method to address the coordination of generation units, ensuring a consistent level of reactive power globally while considering communication delays between units and the central controller. Moreover, once the control system is designed, a reference governor is introduced to dynamically manage the reactive power reference, ensuring compliance with operational constraints. The proposed approach is evaluated through simulations using highly detailed system models, demonstrating its advantages and effectiveness. In particular, for a power plant composed of five 1 MW generators, settling times of less than one second are achieved, as required by the network codes. Complex Adaptation and Change: Social and Historical Dimensions of Linca Sheep Breeding in Northern Patagonia
The Linca sheep represents one of the most important—but least known— biocultural legacies of the Mapuche people in Patagonia, Argentina. Even though these sheep came with conquistadors over three centuries ago, the Merino sheep breed has largely taken their place. In this chapter, we examine the crucial elements that contribute to the preservation of the Linca sheep breeding tradition, which is an essential component of local zoological knowledge (LZK). We begin with a historical analysis that explains the importance of the Linca sheep in the Mapuche textile world, which is embedded in a world in which textiles have always held a crucial place. We also analyze how successive socio-environmental changes have left their mark on the tradition of breeding these animals.Through a qualitative-quantitative analysis of archetypes, based on information from interviews, we identified three profiles: “veteran,” “tenacious,” and “emotionally attached.” It is crucial to acknowledge the lead role portrayed by women within this categorization, as they have become the main keepers of the Linca sheep’s diversity and the knowledge of its textile language, making themselves and their family units responsible of the biocultural heritage of this local breed.Fil: Reising, Carlos Aden. Time-connected phase slips in current-driven two-band superconducting wires
We study quasi-one-dimensional wires of two-band superconductors driven by an electrical current. We findthat the onset of dissipation can occur with the nucleation of time-connected phase slips (t-PS). The topologicalstructure of the t-PS consists of two phase slips (one in each order parameter) separated in time and connectedvia an interband vortex string along the time direction. A situação do trabalho juvenil na Argentina before da eclosão da pandemia de COVID-19 from uma perspectiva regional
El presente artículo tiene como objetivo problematizar sobre la incidencia de la pandemia de Covid-19 en la situación laboral juvenil en virtud de constituirse en una “generación de confinamiento” (OIT, 2020). La metodología abordada es de tipo cuantitativa, donde se procesan datos de la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares como fuentes secundarias y se profundiza en los principales indicadores laborales considerando la distinción regional y diferencias de género. A su vez, el texto retoma los desarrollos críticos de Pérez y Busso (2022) sobre la categoría de “Generación del confinamiento” elaborada por la Organización Internacional del Trabajo en 2020, quienes consideran si la pertenencia del concepto de generación está relacionada con la heterogeneidad de las vinculaciones juveniles con el mundo laboral.Como conclusiones, en el artículo se destaca que las juventudes fueron la población más afectadas por la pandemia y exponiendo especificidades territoriales, de género y generacionales. A su vez, se sostiene que no se debiera rechazar el potencial teórico de la categoría generación, ya que podría estar impactando en las trayectorias laborales juveniles, particularmente si se considera la variable territorial/regional.The purpose of this article is to analyze the incidence of the Covid-19 health and economic crisis on the youth employment situation in the different Argentine regions. The approached methodology is of a quantitative type, where data from the Encuesta Permanente de Hogares are processed as secondary sources and the main labor indicators are deepened considering the regional distinction and gender differences. In turn, the text takes up the critical developments of Pérez and Busso (2022) on the category of "Generation of confinement" (OIT, 2020) elaborated by the International Labour Organization in 2020, who consider whether the belonging of the concept of generation is related to the heterogeneity of the links youth with the world of work. As conclusions, the article highlights that youth were the most affected by the pandemic and that it affected youth in a differential way. In turn, it is argued that the theoretical potential of the generation category should not be rejected, since it could be having an impact on youth employment trajectories, particularly if the territorial/regional variable is considered.O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar o impacto da crise sanitária e econômica do Covid-19 na situação laboral juvenil nas diferentes regiões argentinas. Relevance of grain number and grain weight on barley yield responses to environmental and genetic factors
Objective: This study examines the relationships between the two major components of GY (grain number-GN and grain weight-GW), when driven by genetic and environmental factors.Methods: We compiled data of GY and its numerical components (i.e. GN and GW) to generate a large and unbiased database from every single paper having the word “barley” in the title published over 25 years in four prestigious international journals: Field Crop Research, European Journal of Agronomy, Crop Science and Crop and Pasture Science (formerly Australian Journal of Agricultural Research) between January 1996 and December 2021, both inclusive.Results: GN was significantly better correlated with GY than GW, accounting for 86 % of the variation in GY compared to just 13 % for GW. The changes in GY responsiveness to environmental and genetic factors were mainly due to variations in GN, especially in scenarios with high responsiveness. In contrast, low-responsiveness cases showed trade-offs between GN and GW, suggesting compensatory mechanisms that may not accurately reflect competition for resources.Conclusions: The potential to increase barley GY relies heavily on GN, emphasizing the need to optimise conditions during the critical period of GN determination. Apoyo social y desigualdades socioeconómicas asociadas con inseguridad alimentaria en la vejez
Objetivo. Dar cuenta de la influencia del apoyo social (estructural y funcional) y de aspectos socioeconómicos e individuales sobre la inseguridad alimentaria en personas mayores de zonas urbanas de Argentina. Material y métodos. Se desarrolló un diseño descriptivo-explicativo y se utilizaron los datos de entrevistados de 60 años o más, provenientes de la Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina, recolectados en 2019 (n= 1 357) y 2021 (n= 1 289). Se realizaron análisis descriptivos y se propuso un modelo de regresión logística binaria. Resultados. Los hallazgos muestran la incidencia negativa de factores socioeconómicos e individuales; se destaca la pobreza por ingresos (RM= 4.27; IC95%: 2.83,6.43) y el residir en un hogar compuesto por distintas generaciones (RM= 1.48; IC95%: 1.02,2.14). Contar con una red social es un factor protector ante las carencias alimentarias (RM= 2.04; IC95%: 1.53,2.71). La pobreza por ingresos y la falta de apoyo social afectivo son los factores que, en interacción, indican mayor probabilidad de experimentar inseguridad alimentaria (RM= 3.14; IC95%: 1.22,8.06). Conclusión. A partir de estos hallazgos se busca contribuir a la discusión sobre la vinculación entre la privación alimentaria en personas mayores y aspectos tanto económicos como psicosociales. Estos hallazgos aportan a diagnósticos que consideren la complejidad del déficit alimentario en personas mayores.Objective. Materials and methods. A descriptive-explanatory design was employed using data from individuals aged 60 and above, sourced from the Encuesta de la Deuda Social Argentina collected in 2019 (n= 1 357) and 2021 (n= 1 289). Descriptive analyses were conducted, and a binary logistic regression model was proposed. Results. Findings indicate the negative impact of socioeconomic and individual factors, emphasizing income poverty (OR= 4.27; 95%CI: 2.83,6.43) and living in a multigenerational household (OR= 1.48; 95%CI: 1.02,2.14) as significant factors. Having a social network acts as a protective factor against food insecurity (OR= 2.04; 95%CI: 1.53,2.71). Income poverty and lack of emotional social support, when interacting, indicate a higher likelihood of experiencing food insecurity (OR= 3.14; 95%CI: 1.22,8.06). Conclusion. These findings contribute to the discussion on the relationship between food deprivation in older adults and both economic and psychosocial aspects. Textural complexity and geochemistry of the last millennium pyroclastic deposits from Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex Chile: Implications for tephrochronological and volcanological interpretations
The component variability in Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex (PCCVC) products reflects the inherent complexity of volcanic processes. We examine pyroclastic deposits from Cordón Caulle (2011 and 1960 eruptions) and Puyehue (MH tephra) in a profile ∼20 km windward of the PCCVC. All levels have comparable components (pumice, scoria, glass shards, crystals), buttheir proportions vary according to the dominant eruptive style in both vent sources. The particle microtextures combined with mineralogy and geochemistry differentiate juvenile from non-juvenile particles in macroscopically undifferentiated components, questioning prior assumptions. Highly vesicular pumice is the dominant juvenile component indicating decompression-driven gas exsolution processes. Juvenile blocky glass shards/obsidians, frequently associated with lithics, now provide insights into the potential higher involvement of magma in the phreatomagmatic phases of the MH deposit. Nevertheless, the variability of tephra components is a characteristic of the PCCVC, regardless of the juvenile or lithic character. This research refines tephrochronological tools and deepens our understanding of volcanic processes and deposits in the PCCVC.La variabilidad de componentes en los productos del Complejo Volcánico Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (CVPCC) refleja la complejidad inherente de los procesos volcánicos. En este trabajo, examinamos depósitos piroclásticos de Cordón Caulle (erupciones de 2011 y 1960) y Puyehue (tefra MH) en un perfil a∼20 km al sudeste del CVPCC. Todos los niveles presentan componentes comparables (pómez, escoria, fragmentos de vidrio, cristales), pero sus proporciones varían según el estilo eruptivo dominante en ambos centros de emisión. Las microtexturas de las partículas, combinadas con mineralogía y geoquímica, permiten diferenciar partículas juveniles de no juveniles en componentes que son macroscópicamente similares, cuestionando suposiciones previas. La pómez altamente vesiculada es el componente juvenil dominante, lo que indica procesos de desgasificación impulsados por la descompresión. Los fragmentos angulosos de vidrio juvenil/obsidiana, frecuentemente asociados con líticos, ahora aportan información sobre la posible mayor participación de magma en las fases freatomagmáticas del depósito MH. No obstante, la variabilidad de los componentes de la tefra es una característica del CVPCC, más allá del carácter juvenil o lítico. Plant invasion risk assessment in Argentina's arid and semi-arid rangelands
Climate change and anthropogenic activities have amplified the risk of invasive species spread. Approximately two-thirds of Argentina’s land area comprises arid and semi-arid rangelands, yet the current state of invasions across these vast regions and their projected spread under future climate change scenarios remain insufficiently understood. To address this research gap, we employed an ensemble modeling approach to simulate and predict the distribution of 30 major invasive species across Argentina’s five key arid and semi-arid rangelands. Our findings revealed that Patagonia and Western Chaco are minimally impacted by invasive species, while the Monte and Puna rangelands exhibit extensive areas of low invasion risk. In contrast, the Caldenal rangeland, as an ecotone, faces the most severe impacts. Notably, Centaurea solstitialis, Cynodon dactylon, Diplotaxis tenuifolia, Plantago major, Polypogon monspeliensis, Sorghum halepense, and Taraxacum officinale were identified as key invaders in Argentina’s arid and semi-arid rangelands, with invasion areas exceeding 10% in at least one rangeland. Under high-emission scenarios, the invasion risk is projected to increase significantly across different rangelands. Among the key environmental variables incorporated into the model, the mean temperature of the driest quarter emerged as the most critical climatic variable due to its high contribution to the predicted distribution of 19 invasive species. Our study serves as a crucial warning for the management of arid and semi-arid rangelands in Argentina, highlighting the urgency of addressing invasive species under changing environmental conditions.Fil: Zhao, Jingdong. Experimental validation of true randomness and entropy generation leveraging asynchronous cellular automata
In this work, we experimentally validate the effectiveness of physically implemented Asynchronous Cellular Automata (ACA) as entropy sources for True Random Number Generators (TRNG). The randomness production mechanism, initially proposed in previous research, has been rigorously tested using reconfigurable digital circuits on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). Random bit sequences generated at 0.8 Gbit/s successfully meet the stringent requirements for high-quality TRNG, as confirmed by statistical and entropy test suites from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Testing across multiple hardware implementations and synthesis strategies demonstrated the robustness and reliability of the ACA-based method. Bioaccumulation and effects of anthropogenic microparticles in Brachidontes rodriguezii from the Southwestern Atlantic coast
The bivalve Brachidontes rodriguezii, a species inhabiting the southwestern Atlantic coast, has emerged as an ideal bioindicator for environmental contamination due to its continuous water filtration, which exposes it to anthropogenic particles (APs), including microplastics (MPs). Although APs such as MPs have been shown to cause biological harm in bivalves, further research is essential to a deeper understanding of these impacts. This study investigates the concentrations and characteristics of APs in the soft tissue of B. rodriguezii and the surrounding water column at two contrasting sites in southern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina: Pehuen-Co (PC), a region with lower industrial activity, and Club Náutico (CN), a heavily industrialized and urbanized area. Our results indicate surprisingly higher AP concentrations at PC (22.0 ± 5.7 items/L in seawater; 4.2 ± 2.7 items/g w.w. in soft tissue) compared to CN (4.7 ± 1.2 items/L in seawater; 1.0 ± 0.3 items/g w.w. in soft tissue), with bioaccumulation factors exceeding 100 for both sites. APs smaller than 1 mm and fibers were predominant across all samples, while fragments were exclusively detected in the soft tissue of mussels. Interestingly, the APs from PC displayed greater color diversity than CN. Health assessments revealed significant site-specific differences: mussels from PC exhibited higher rates of digestive gland alterations (80 %) and parasite presence (15 %) but no evidence of eosinophilic bodies or hermaphroditism. Conversely, mussels from CN had lower rates of digestive gland alterations (50 %), no parasites, but a high incidence of eosinophilic bodies (61 %). At the molecular level, no site-specific differences were observed in the expression of genes related to oxidative stress markers such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen species (ROS), or total thiols. However, protein carbonylation and lipid peroxidation were elevated in mussels from CN. In conclusion, B. rodriguezii bioaccumulates APs in its tissues, correlating with environmental levels, thus confirming its status as an effective bioindicator of AP contamination. The higher levels of APs in PC and the observed histological alterations, along with the lower oxidative stress response, may suggest that APs primarily affect tissue level rather than oxidative stress.
