Life and Death During Childhood in Late Holocene Hunter-Gatherers from the Lower Paraná Wetlands (Argentina)
This study investigates the material and social dimensions of childhood among Late Holocene hunter-gatherers in the lower Paraná wetlands (Argentina). Drawing on archaeological, bioanthropological, and ethnographic evidence, it explores children’s participation in daily subsistence activities and their mortuary treatment. The abundance of stable, predictable, and low-risk resources likely enabled children to contribute meaningfully to tasks such as fishing, small-game hunting, mollusc gathering, and plant collection. The settlement pattern, centred on long-term camps, may have facilitated their involvement by promoting deep knowledge of the surrounding environments. Mortuary practices show two distinct age-related patterns: children under six were typically buried in primary graves alongside adults, suggesting shared ritual significance, while individuals aged 10–20 years were more often placed in secondary burials. These patterns reflect nuanced social categorisations of non-adults and underscore the importance of integrating multiple lines of evidence to reconstruct childhood experiences and roles within pre-Columbian societies of the region.Fil: Acosta, Alejandro Alberto. Surface and Curvature Tensions of Cold, Dense Quark Matter: A Term-by-Term Analysis Within the Nambu–Jona–Lasinio Model
In this paper, we conduct a thorough investigation of the surface and curvaturetensions, σ and γ, of three-flavor cold quark matter using the Nambu?Jona?Lasinio (NJL)model with vector interactions. Our approach ensures both local and global electric chargeneutrality, as well as chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. By employing themultiple reflection expansion formalism to account for finite size effects, we explore theimpact of specific input parameters, particularly the vector coupling constant ratio ηV, theradius R of quark matter droplets, as well as the charge-per-baryon ratio ξ of the finite sizeconfigurations. We focus on the role of the contributions of each term of the NJL Lagrangianto the surface and curvature tensions in the mean field approximation. We find that thetotal surface tension exhibits two different density regimes: it remains roughly constant ataround 100MeVfm−2 up to approximately 2?4 times the nuclear saturation density, andbeyond this point, it becomes a steeply increasing function of nB. The total surface andcurvature tensions are relatively insensitive to variations in R but are affected by changesin ξ and ηV. We observe that the largest contribution to σ and γ comes from the regularizeddivergent term, making these quantities significantly higher than those obtained within theMIT bag model.Fil: Grunfeld, Ana Gabriela. Extinct megafauna dominated human subsistence in southern South America before 11,600 years ago
One of the most widely cited objections to hypotheses that defend a central role for humans in late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions in South America has been the assumption that extinct megafauna was a marginal resource in early human economies. Based on accurate chronological frames and faunal quantitative data, we demonstrate that extinct megafauna were principal prey item of early foragers from ca. 13,000 to 11,600 calibrated years before present (cal. years BP), and this fact had likely been obscured by lumping together pre- and post-extinction archaeological faunal assemblages within a single chronological window. We also show that the most exploited extinct taxa were at the apex of the ranking of the Prey Choice Model. After the diversity and abundance of megafauna had already declined severely (ca. 12,500 BP), and especially after they had virtually disappeared (ca. 11,600 BP), the human diet was broadened. This strongly reinforces the idea that humans must be central to the debate on Quaternary extinctions in South America.Fil: Prates, Luciano Raúl. Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Electrochemically Activated Screen-Printed Graphene Electrochemical Sensor for Daidzein Determination in Edible Peanut Oils
In this work, we designed a novel and simple electrochemical approach for the determinationof daidzein antioxidant (Dz) in peanut oil samples. The Dz determination was basedon anodic stripping linear voltammetry using screen-printed graphene electrodes (SPGEs)activated in acidic media, where a strong adsorption of Dz on activated graphene wasobtained. In this regard, electroanalytical parameters such as the scan rate, supportingelectrolyte, pH, and accumulation step were optimized to ensure the best conditions for theselective and sensitive Dz quantification. The electrochemical method developed for the determination of Dz exhibits a linear behavior of the anodic peak current in the concentrationrange from 0.05 to 1 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.012 μM. The electrochemical sensordemonstrated to the capacity to quantify Dz in peanut oil samples at low concentrationswithout the necessity of an extensive sample pretreatment. Therefore, the electrochemicalmethod proposed can be used as a new portable analytical tool for the in situ quality controlof peanut oil samples.
The estimation of the residence time required to achieve a desired conversion in a fluid-solid reaction demands a great computational effort. This effort is even greater when the solid particles have different sizes. For this reason, it is of interest to develop simplified models that allow such estimation with less effort. In this work, simplified models are proposed for the case of heterogeneous reactions that can be represented with the shrinking-core model, with controlling resistance in the mass transfer through the film, in the chemical reaction or in the diffusion through the ash. The proposed models were developed for plug flow reactors and for continuous perfectly mixed reactors. These models are of two types: correlations and artificial neural networks. To develop the correlations, functions that meet certain mathematical conditions were selected. These functions were then fitted by regression. In addition, different structures of artificial neural networks were tested until the one that minimizes the test error was found. Both to adjust the correlations and to train the neural networks, data obtained from solving the shrinking-core model considering different controlling stages were used.Fil: Tarifa, Enrique Eduardo. To migrate and to belong: Intimacy, ecclesiastical absence, and playful competition in the Aymara Anata-Carnival of Chiapa (Chile)
The article analyzes the Anata-Carnival festivity celebrated in the Andean town of Chiapa in the Tarapacá Region, Great North of Chile. I suggest that this celebration constitutes one of the main events that promote the reproduction of feelings of local belonging, as well as of processes of identity resignification for the vast majority of those who have migrated from this town to cities addressed here through ethnicization and communalization mechanisms. Adopting an observant participation methodology mediated through my role of photographer of Andean festivities, as well as through a multi-sited ethnography that allowed to conduct in depth interviews with people who live permanently, stationary or have returned to this town, I reveal the implications that the Anata-Carnival has for the collective identity-construction of the people of Chiapa, under the hypothesis that migration does not break with community membership. I propose that the characteristics of this holiday: intimacy; absence of the church; and the ancestral playful competence of Mankazaya (partiality from below) and Arakzaya (partiality from above), allow for the reproduction of Aymara dynamics that translate for those who migrated to citys in the Great North of Chile in the possibility and responsibility of maintaining community ties and continuing to belong.Fil: Mardones Charlone, Pablo. Hypoxia induced by disruption of FGF signalling impairs moulting via insulin and neurohormonal regulation in Rhodnius prolixus
The tracheal system of insects undergoes dynamic changes during growth to meet increasing oxygen demands, which are crucial for processes such as moulting. Studies in model organisms, such as Drosophila melanogaster, have identified key genetic regulators of tracheal development, including components of the FGF signalling pathway – branchless (bnl) and breathless (btl). The present study centres on the role of FGFR and bnl in Rhodnius prolixus in tracheogenesis and moulting regulation. Here we identified R. prolixus FGF signalling pathway orthologues implicated in tracheogenesis, providing insight into their conserved function in regulating tracheal development in this species. Insects with knockdown of Rp-bnl and Rp-FGFR showed disruptions in three major biological processes: tracheogenesis, moulting and metabolic homeostasis. Gene expression analysis revealed that downregulation of Rp-bnl and Rp-FGFR expression induced tissue hypoxia, altered the expression of critical moulting regulators and modified metabolic pathways, by affecting the expression of central metabolic factors involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, such as Insulin-like peptide and Adipokinetic hormone. Our work provides the first characterisation of the Rp-Bnl/FGFR pathway in R. prolixus. It shows its central role in coordinating tracheogenesis, developmental timing and the regulation of metabolic pathways, providing new insights into the molecular mechanisms behind these interconnected developmental and physiological processes under hypoxic stress.Fil: Buzetti, Guillermina.
The consumption behavior of three termite species (Cortaritermes fulviceps, Nasutitermes aquilinus, and Nasutitermes corniger) was analyzed through laboratory bioassays, using wood from four tree species commonly utilized in structures and furniture in northeastern Argentina (Eucalyptus grandis, Pinus elliottii, Neltuma alba, and Cordia americana). Wood consumption by each termite species was measured by the difference between the initial and final dry weight of the samples, and by using a qualitative scale. All four wood types were consumed by the three termite species. The consumption by C. fulviceps and N. aquilinus was reduced, and the damage was categorized as slight or moderate; therefore, both termites could be considered occasional urban pests. Conversely, N. corniger produced the most significant damage in all wood types, confirming its status as a severe structural pest and the need for monitoring and control of this species.Fil: Etcheverry, Clara. Between the militant-feminist and the activist-businesswoman: nuances in the performances of gynecologist influencers of sexual health
This article analyzes the performance of two Argentine gynecologist influencers (Gineconline and Soberaníamenstrual) who publish content on their Instagram accounts on “sexual health and sexuality” and who have the capacity to influence the local agenda on this issue, from a gender and rights approach. The objective is to characterize the type of facade they build and the ethos they deploy in the search for authenticity they hold in the construction of themselves. The work methodology is qualitative, through a digital ethnography that takes up an in-depth analysis made on their profiles between 2020 and 2024 and considers mainly by units of analysis publications that occurred before four relevant events in 2024. The conclusions show that one of the cases cultivates an activist ethos in health against the hegemonic medical model, but also entrepreneurial, close to the values of effort, success and individual self-improvement. On the other hand, the other constructs a militant-feminist ethos, linking health demands to the struggles of social collectives and linking what happens “inside” the health field with the “outside” conjunctural and political party.Fil: Cialdella, Andrea Sol. Beyond conventional control: Integrated and adaptive management of water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes Mart. (Pontederiaceae)), a multiple stakeholders’ approach
Water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes), one of themost invasive alien plants globally, is native to South America but has spreadto regions like El Ojo lake in San Vicente, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Within twoyears, its coverage expanded from 10% to 80%, negatively affectingbiodiversity, navigation, fishing, and tourism. This study developed andimplemented an integrated and adaptive management strategy (IAMS) to addressthe invasion. The IAMS combined biological control using Neochetina bruchi, mechanical extraction, and community engagement through focusgroups, educational workshops, and outreach events. Satellite imagery was usedto monitor the plant’s spatial and temporal dynamics, while plant parameterssuch as wet biomass, density, and morphology were recorded. A social perceptionsurvey assessed community awareness of the invasion and the IAMS. Resultsshowed a 70% reduction in P. crassipes biomass between 2017and 2018, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining biological andmechanical control with community involvement. This study marks the firstimplementation of an augmentative biological control program for an aquaticplant in Argentina and provides a replicable model for managing invasivespecies in other regions.Fil: Righetti, Tomás.
