Rediscovery of an extinct species of caviine rodent of the Late Pleistocene after the Last Glacial Maximum in the Pampasic Domain (Argentina)

    No full text
Galea tixiensis Quintana 2001, an extinct caviid species whose taxonomic status was questioned, has been identified at the Salto de Piedra (SPPL) paleontological site in Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). Morphological and morphometric analyses of these SPPL remains, together with contemporary and type locality specimens, support the taxonomic validity of this species. This identification dates the species back to ∼16,300 cal BP and extends its geographic distribution ∼200 km eastward in the Pampasic Domain. Other caviine include the extinct Microcavia cf. M. robusta. Paleoenvironmental correlations suggest that this diverse caviine fauna likely correspond to climatic and ecological shifts during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. Species like M. robusta and Galea ortodonta disappeared as grasslands replaced shrub steppes in the region during the Holocene, and Cavia aperea arrived here from the north. Today, C. aperea is the only caviine species inhabiting the core of the Pampasic Domain, Microcavia australis and Galea leucoblephara remain restricted to southern xeric coastal environments and G. tixiensis appears to have become extinct in the 19th century. This study provides valuable insights into faunal shifts within the Pampasic Domain, linking these findings to broader patterns of Late Pleistocene biodiversity and environmental dynamics in South America.Fil: Fernández, Fernando Julián. Trajectory through Different executive training Interventions for children from socioeconomically deprived households in Argentina

    No full text
Between the years of 2002 and 2018, researchers from the Unidad de NeurobiologíaAplicada and the Laboratorio de Neurociencia Integrativa designed, implemented, and evaluated the impact of a series of experimental and quasi-experimental interventions aimed at promoting executive performance across different samples of children aged 3 to 8 years, from socioeconomically deprived households in various districts of Argentina. This paper describes the design of these interventions, which followed a specific logical conceptual sequence, initially focused on assessing potential change in cognitive processes of attention, inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and planning. Subsequent generations of interventions were oriented toward exploring mechanisms of change through curricular adaptations, dyadic games between primary caregiver-child interactions, and computerized activities that included training adjusted to individual performance. Additionally, significant efforts were made to evaluate the potential modulation of intervention impacts by several individual and contextual factors, as well as their near and far transfer to academic activities, and to neural activity changes. Throughout this trajectory of design, implementation, and impact evaluation, researchers progressively updated their theoretical conceptions about self-regulatory development, poverty definitions, and the use of this knowledge by different stakeholders and policymakers in Argentina and the Latin American region. Our results may inform future research directions within a diverse developmental science context.Fil: Segretin, María Soledad. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. “I can barely cope with myself, how could I possibly cope with someone else?”: Expectations of women with motor and visual disabilities regarding the maternal ideal

    No full text
Feminist perspectives have highlighted the inadequacy of the formula that equates women with the reproductive function and motherhood as an inevitable destiny. For disabled women, this equivalence does not hold: in contrast to the socially constructed ideal of motherhood, their capacity to reproduce and/or care for others is questioned. This article describes and analyzes the expectations of motherhood among seventeen cisgender, heterosexual women with motor and visual disabilities, aged 22 to 38, who have not had children and reside in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. The analysis, based on in-depth interviews, explores the negotiation they undertake between the social mandate of motherhood and the perceived limitations. Findings highlight that motherhood is a difficult goal to materialize and/or imagine due to their physical impairments, various fears, lack of financial solvency, and the social stigma of being perceived as risky or selfish. In sum, they shape expectations that lead to a complex negotiation of motherhood, which is challenged by ableist social structures.Fil: Tiseyra, María Victoria. On the effect of thermal strains in slender prestressed concrete beams

    No full text
In construction sector, prestressed concrete beams are commonly used, even in ordinary buildings; as a consequence, their exposure to various risk factors, including fires or high thermal gradients, is quite high. Extensive research has focused on concrete structures under extreme loading conditions, but slender prestressed members have proven unique and challenging in the understanding of mechanical response and their numerical modelling. In fact, unlike ordinary concrete beams and columns, these structures are particularly sensitive to temperature changes and temperature gradients. In addition, their thermo-mechanical response is further complicated by the interaction of thermal loads with pre-existing prestressing stresses, which vary with time as a function of temperature field. This work explores this dual behavior by means of numerical simulations including temperature-dependent material properties, focusing on the thermal expansion coefficient (α) and thermal transient creep. Using a staggered scheme finite element modelling, the analysis applies a coupled thermo-mechanical approach. The model has been validated on a series of experimental tests carried out at Polytechnic of Bari. The comparison showed the model capability to capture the influence of temperature-dependent strains on these slender structures. The results highlight how even minor variations in thermal properties can affect the mechanical response, providing insights essential for the safe design of prestressed concrete elements under thermal loads.Fil: Ruano, Gonzalo. Female‐biased nectar production is associated with the Darwin's inflorescence syndrome

    No full text
    • Plant reproduction is influenced not only by individual flower characteristics but alsoby the arrangement of flowers within inflorescences. In bee-pollinated plants with protandrous flowers in vertical acropetal inflorescences — where male fertile flower structures mature before female ones and basal flowers open first (i.e., Darwin’sinflorescence configuration) — male-phase flowers are positioned above female-phaseflowers. This arrangement benefits from the upward foraging motion of bees, reducingpollen transfer between flowers of the same plant and increasing pollen export. Additionally, female-biased nectar production in these species could reinforce upward beemovement, further reducing self-pollen transfer.• We conducted a comparative study of 112 hermaphrodite angiosperm species withtemporal separation of male and female reproductive functions (i.e., dichogamy) toexplore whether female-biased nectar production is common among bee-pollinatedspecies with Darwin’s inflorescence configuration.• Our results revealed female-biased nectar production in bee-pollinated species withDarwin’s inflorescence configuration. In the absence of bee pollination, species withthis type of inflorescence exhibit male-biased nectar production. Gender-biased nectarproduction is absent in species lacking this inflorescence type.• Female-biased nectar production in vertical acropetal inflorescences with protandrousflowers likely evolved independently in different bee-pollinated species to enhance pollen export. Our study emphasizes the need for microevolutionary research on how nectar production patterns adapt to bee pollination in species with Darwin’s inflorescenceconfiguration. It also calls for investigation into the developmental biases influencingnectar production in plants with dichogamous flowers.Fil: Strelin, Marina Micaela. Back to the poop: the oldest hexapod scales discovered within a Triassic coprolite from Argentina

    No full text
Life on Earth nearly came to an end during the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME; c. 252 Ma). In its aftermath, the Triassic witnessed the adaptation of survivors to a postapocalyptic world and the establishment of modernecosystems. Inland, these changes included an outstanding turnover between amniote groups triggered by thediversification of plants and arthropods. A super-radiation of morphologically modern insects occurred in theTriassic, including some of their most successful and ecologically relevant groups, such as Diptera (flies andmosquitoes) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). Here, we describe the oldest evidence of hexapod scales, preserved within a megaherbivorous kannemeyeriiform dicynodont coprolite. This specimen comes from acommunal latrine in the lower Carnian deposits (~236 Ma) of the Chanares ˜ Formation, La Rioja Province, northwestern Argentina. The tiny fossil scales are hollow and ornamented, which is a synapomorphy of Lepidoptera and suggests that they could belong to this group. If this is the case, the Chanares ˜ scales would partiallyfill the temporal mismatch between phylogenomic date and the fossil evidence of butterflies and moths becausethey preceded the previously oldest lepidopteran record by c. 35 million years. Moreover, the scales have acombination of features present in early diverging glossatan lepidopterans. The inclusion of the temporal dataprovided by the Chanares ˜ scales into an updated temporal calibration of lepidopteran phylogeny shows that theproboscis, a key evolutionary novelty for the group (Glossata), evolved between c. 260–244 Ma. Thus, theproboscis-bearing lepidopterans would be part of the repertory of new plants and animals that diversified duringthe aftermath of the EPME.Fil: Fiorelli, Lucas Ernesto. Systematic study of a thulium-doped all-polarization maintaining modelocked fiber laser from a low to high fundamental repetition rate

    No full text
In this work, we present an experimental and theoretical study of a passivelymodelocked all-fiber laser that fully retains polarization with a fundamental repetition rateranging from 0.1 to 1 GHz. The whole cavity consists of a highly-Tm-doped fiber in tandemwith a passive fiber, both with polarization-maintenance, with a dichroic mirror on one end anda semiconductor saturable absorber mirror on the other. We experimentally characterized theoutput of this laser, which emits a train of transform-limited sub-picosecond light pulses aroundthe two microns. The high stability of this laser was also experimentally verified. Together withthis, a detailed theoretical model was developed, confirming the experimental results.Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Lone women who are not alone: scenes of intimacy in the Ocampo archive

    No full text
This article engages with rarely-explored materials from the writings of Victoria Ocampo with the aim of contributing to the creation of a feminist archive of Argentine culture. Drawing on the ideas of Cvetkovich (2018) and Hemmings (2018), this archive is conceived as a methodological construct capable of generating tension and bringing forth previously unconsidered, gendered meanings in the analyzed materials, in the desires of the critics, and in the various narratives of the communities. The article proposes specific selections that make visible certain historical and symbolic frameworks determining the access to and circulation of words and images about and by women and sexually dissident individuals. While friendships, often imbued with lesbian and feminist nuances, and their expressions in Ocampo's writings are of central interest, this text also addresses the question of how the Ocampo archive was read/written. Speculation around intimacy is fundamental for this purpose: it can reveal triggers for many of the categories shaping Western thought, and because intimacy always occurs in company. Starting with an incident involving Ocampo and Gloria Alcorta, the first two scenes in this article reflect on certain ways in which heterosexist pacts and their association with rumor delineate access to authorship and the developments in Ocampo's (auto)biographical narrative, as well as certain trajectories of the criticism that has interpreted her work. The following two scenes are constructed as a “lesbian scene”: an enclave where unexpected imaginations are activated and the canonical structure of desire is destabilized.Fil: Arnés, Laura Antonella. Motivations and limitations to improve dairy heifer replacement programs in the west of Buenos Aires province, Argentina

    No full text
Dairy heifer replacement programs (RPs) are crucial for herd health and productivity. Understanding the factors that motivate or limit their implementation could go a long way toward promoting these programs more effectively. This study aimed to quantify the relative importance of such factors among dairy farmers and ad- visors in the west of Buenos Aires (Argentina). For this, a choice experiment was designed using conjoint analysis (CA). The factors included therein were chosen based on the literature and expert discussions. The participants (48 farmers and 41 advisors) were asked to rank nine motivating and nine limiting profiles, i.e. combinations of factors and their corresponding levels, from 1 (most motivating/limiting) to 9 (least motivating/limiting). The part-worth utility value and relative importance of each factor and level was then estimated through ordinary least squares regression. The results showed that motivating and limiting factors had the same relative impor- tance for farmers and advisors when deciding to adopt/recommend improved RPs. The part-worth utilities for different levels were not significantly different from each other in the advisors’ rankings (p-values >0.05), but they were significantly different (p-value <0.05) for the farmers within the factors “Expectations”, “External support” and “Investments needed”. The highest part-worth utility was assigned to having a feasible program to implement. The lowest values corresponded to having access to public and/or private support and having to invest in regular professional advice. These findings are further evidence that the factors driving or hindering the enhancement of dairy farm management are manifold and often farm-specific.Fil: Demateis Llera, Federico.
