The Development and Use of a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) Assessment to Foster Deeper Learning: An Exploratory Web-Based Qualitative Investigation

    No full text
This paper reports on the development and piloting of a new model of multiple-choice question (MCQ) assessment used in two undergraduate degree modules at a tertiary university. The new model was purposefully designed to promote deeper learning closely aligned with the SOLO taxonomy. Students were invited to participate in an exploratory qualitative study exploring their experience of learning using this new assessment. In total, 13 students completed an online open-ended qualitative questionnaire. Data was analyzed thematically. Four themes were generated: (a) empowered choice, (b) iterative reading, (c) forcing comparison, and (d) justified understandings. Findings suggest that the new model MCQ assessment promoted wider and more prolonged engagement with learning materials and fostered critical comparisons resulting in deeper learning. Limitations in study design mean that further research is merited to develop our model of MCQ assessment and enhance our understanding of students\u27 learning experience

Should Climate Scientists Fly? : A Case Study of Arguments at the System Level

    No full text
I inquire into argument at the system level, exploring the controversy over whether climate scientists should fly. I document participants’ knowledge of a skeptical argument that because scientists fly, they cannot testify credibly about the climate emergency. I show how this argument has been managed by pro-climate action arguers, and how some climate scientists have developed parallel reasoning, articulating a sophisticated case why they will be more effective in the controversy if they fly less. Finally, I review some strategies arguers deploy to use the arguments of others against them. I argue that only by attending to argument-making at the system level can we understand how arguers come to know the resources for argument available in a controversy and to think strategically about how to use them.

    No full text
This paper deals with the problems and delays that have occurred in the implementation of Jordan’s Principle within the Government of Canada. The paper first provides an overview of the allegations of discrimination made by the Assembly of First Nations and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society in their human rights complaint against Canada regarding the jurisdictional disputes and lack of coordination between the various levels of government and between government departments and the harmful impact they have on First Nations children. It then summarizes the initial decision of the Canadian Human Rights Commission [CHRC] in January 2016 concerning Jordan’s Principle. The problems and delays associated with implementation of the CHRC decision are examined, and the May 2017 CHRC order compelling Canada to take concrete measures to comply with its initial decision is reviewed in detail. The final part of the paper advances the position that in order to genuinely ensure substantive equality in Canadian society, Canada must be more proactive in identifying and remedying its discriminatory practices. In this case, putting the Spirit Bear Plan into effect within the Canadian government offers a promising way forward for ending injustices in the delivery of public services for First Nations children.

Creating an Authentic International Development Learning Opportunity: Lessons learned from 30 students, 12 flights, 42 range rover trips, one capsized boat, and two visits to hospital

    No full text
This paper draws from the author’s experience of developing a short-term intensive international learning experience within the framework of a one-semester course. The paper is aimed at faculty members who are interested in implementing a short but effective and authentic international learning opportunity, but who may not have expertise in issues surrounding international development and learning abroad. It addresses some of the challenges, successes, and lessons learned, such as working with an appropriate international partner, overcoming barriers to student participation, ensuring discipline-specific learning, and providing the appropriate context of international development issues within the time-frame of a single semester.

Sequential Writing Assignments to Critically Evaluate Primary Scientific Literature

    No full text
In the later years of undergraduate study, students read, process, and evaluate primary literature within specific fields of study. Shifting from textbooks to the vast amounts of peer-reviewed current literature can be difficult for students. This article details an innovative approach to helping students successfully make this transition through a series of sequential assignments based on the levels of increasing cognitive complexity in Bloom’s taxonomy. These assignments are designed to be flexible enough to use in fields throughout the sciences and beyond, while allowing instructors to tailor these assignments to meet the needs of their particular students.
